BMW panniers?

Hi folks.

Any of you lot (apart from GWF) got a pair of BMW panniers that would
fit a 1998 R850R lounging about in a shed, all unwanted?

When I bought the bike, from Procycles, about four months ago, they did
offer a pair of new panniers for some $840, and I, stupidly, didn't
accept their offer.

Went in last week and asked about them and got told, no, that was the
price then, now they want about $1200.  :-(

The bike has the standard BM mounting brackets, and the left hand case
seems to be an odd, cut out shaped thing.

Cheers for that Boxer.

I have a horrible feeling the shipping could be the killer, tho.

Have sent them e-mail requesting a price for shipping....

Nope he certainly wouldn't George; airhead Krauser panniers wouldn't have a
hope of fitting on his oilhead!

Try the BM shop at Whitehorse Rd somewhere about 20km east of Melbourne and
the BM shop in Stafford Brisbane.
Both are non-factory BM specialists.
The Melbourne one nicked my panniers (I think) so maybe they've still got
'em for sale!

I got my K panniers from a BM wrecker in Gosford.

PS.  You can fit a lower muffler which allows a full-size left pannier.

Heatherdale/Whitehorse; same diff!
Thanks Nev.

The other BM Shop I mentioned (which used to be called "The BM Shop") is BMW
Motorcycle Specialists, 28 Wolverhampton St, Stafford, (07) 3356 6128.

Thanks Clem, and Nev.

I'll give 'em both a bell tomorrow.

I'm not too keen on the flea-bay option from the UK, just too many
unknowns for me to gamble with.

Boxer's suggestion, from Motobins, may be a goer, depending on what they
quote for postage.

I recently got a book, the Police Foundation, Motorcycle Roadcraft, sent
over from UK, and, for a wee thin paperback, postage was five english
pounds, so I'm hesitant about ordering two bloody big panniers to me
sent by mail until I get some kind of idea of the postage.

I suppose that if either the Melb or Bris places have the appropriate
panniers, I'd have an excuse for a ride. ;-)

They don't park customer bikes out on the road, and they all work out
the back... it never looks like much life there.  In fact you could be
mistaken for thinking the place was closed even after walking through
the front door some days.

Good folks there.

The other places to try for BM stuff would be Munich Motorcycles in
Perth somewhere, Moto Hansa, can't remember where they are but did me a
good front wheel, and Discount Motorcycle Wreckerses in Coburg (Melbourne)

Make sure you really want the panniers before spending big on them, I
didn't like the Airhead side-opening ones at all.

Old BMW panniers famously suffered from Krauser Disease when they
would suddenly fly open and eject contents all over the road.  Which
is why so many older Beemers have panniers wrapped in occy straps.

I giggled when I noticed the Norge panniers have a clip obviously
designed to make sure that can't happen....

They do seem to be.

I had a bit of a chat, after they said they didn't have any panniers to
suit my bike.

The person suggested that for the right panniers in good nick, I'd
probably be up for about $600.

Well, when I had the K100RS, I _loved_ the cop (sorry, city) panniers. I
actually had the big tourer ones as well, but I think I only used them
twice.

As for spending up big, I contacted the pommie mob that Boxer suggested.
Postage turned out to be about the equivalent of buying three panniers. :-|

But three pommie panniers are still less than buying two panniers at
full price in Oz.

I you get together with some other people and buy some more parts and fill
the panniers the shared cost of postage could go down.

I am going to buy some parts off them soon so if you decide to get them get
in contact and we can share the postage.

I have actually ordered them, and, while it's basically a good idea, the
trouble is that the total cost of the parts will be the insured cost of
the parts, etc. and, if you want more than two BM badged toothpicks,
will then be over the 1,000 dollar mark which seems to trigger an
interest from the Customs here.

Even paying the tax on an import item isn't too bad, but the time wasted
with the customs folk here in Sydney is just too silly to contemplate. :-(
(I speak from experience!)

$1000 is the magic number for goods imported by post. Bastard couriers
(UPS/DHL/FedEx/et al) start charging duties from $0.01)

If your 850R still has its catalytic converter fitted then you can
just remove the muffler, and put a car exhaust tip on the exit pipe in
the jaunty angle of your choosing.

The noise level barely rises, though becomes kind of sportier, the
engine management system copes fine, and you can fit a full-sized left
case. A new  foot mounting for the case needs to be made (I can point
you to a source for the design which looks simple enough) but apart
from that all works well.

The genuine cases are brilliant, but never forget to lock them in
place with then handles down. Make it a mantra...

Bugga....

Ain't that just the way of it.   :-(

You order the new, at vast expense, and, next thing you know, there are
some second hand ones....<shrug>

Thanks Al, I certainly don't hang around adventure rider groups,
remember, we have established that I'm a wimp rider.
