Does anyone feel like giving a mech noob a hand ?

I've had an exhaust rattle for a bit, so today I cracked the sh.ts and
took it off to see the cause.

Anyway there's a tube from the front cylinder to a "box" which then goes
to the muffler itself via another tube. The second cylinder's exhaust
also attaches onto the box thing.

I presume the box contains the catalytic converter or whatever. Anyway
it contains *something* because the bastard rattles when I shake it.

Short of replacing it, cutting the box open and removing (or fixing in
place) the offending loose part seems to be the only option.

The idea of welding something scares the crap out of me, inasmuch as I
don't have a welder, nor do I know anyone with one.

I've always known that part as a collector box fwiw.

Anyways I strongly recommend you get a professional to do it. Welding
well isn't easy, and thin metal like that is quite difficult to do well
(ie not burn holes in it while still actually making the thing stick.

Any decent engineering firm should be able to do it.

A collector box is simply a chamber allowing multiple headers to be
joined together to feed into a single catalytic converter and silencer.
They usually don't have very much inside them, if anything, although
maybe his has a baffle which has broken loose. I´d be talking to the
dealer before going to an engineering firm - IIRC collector boxes are not
designed to be easily opened.

Yeebers.

I'd seriously consider getting the box cut out and a Y piece collector
welded in place.
As mentioned before, an engineering firm can do it or take it to a car
exhaust shop.

While that is a cheap solution, you MAY find you lose power when you
do it.

Collector boxes (usually) actually do more than just conveniently
joining pipes together - they are (should be(1)) part of a tuned
exhaust system. The power characteristics (and exhaust note) of the
TRX and TDM are slightly different despite identical motors - the main
(mechanical) difference is the presence/absence of the collector box -
the exhausts are quite similar IIRC.

Yeah - good advice.
My busa had a couple of Yoshi cans on it when I bought it second hand.
It caused an amazing amount of coughing and spluttering as the
exhausts weren't matched to the fuel mapping any more. It took a Power
Commander and $2k later from fitting and dynot tuning before the bike
performed correctly. Fun factor is we did end up with 138kW at the
rear wheel though :-)

Didn't TRiXie have a different crank & 270° firing order to make it
sound more 'Ducati' while the other had the TeDiouM of a standard inline
twin firing pattern?

As far as I'm aware they both had the same firing pattern. Which is to
say I've not ever seen anything to suggest otherwise but it doesn't
mean you're wrong.

A quick google suggests we're both right.

According to that the TDM changed to the 270 deg firing order in 1996
- the only TDM's I've heard have been relatively current models (in
particular I was thinking of Al Pennykid's ~2000 model TDM850 when I
wrote the above). On the run I did with him and Postman Pat (and
Roscoe & I forget who else) to Ginger's Creek in about 2001 was when I
first compared them and was quite surprised at the difference.

Al's 1991 and my 1992 TDM both had the 180 crank.
The second generation TDM850s used the 270 crank,and the 900s use a
270 also.

Best bike I ever owned.... :-)

Hmmm. But what year model was the TDM he rode on our foray to the wilds
of Gingers Creek ? It was in bloody good nick if that was a 10 yr old bike !

It must have been earlier than 2001--I think I may have been on my
Dominator (bought Jan 97 and traded early 01 for a CBR600).
Of course,I could be wrong...

Can't have been any earlier than 2000 'cos that's the year I bought the
TRX I'm pretty sure, hang on, google will know.

Tim M, Bruce on the Muz (haven't seen him on here in years), Al P, Ross
on the ST, Postman Pat (got lost again), I can't figure out who else
went as google groups search is totally borked and I can't find the ride
report I remember doing. ;-(

I did find the Hamish thread about the Canberra ride a couple of weeks
later though :-) Geez I did a lot of K's that month - probably more than
I did in the last 6months of this year ;-(

Met him at an AMC meeting a month or two back.  Muz still happily
going, Ducati RT all restored.
