Shirley, a round for the house on me. I just picked up a 2005 Road
Glide Saturday. First impressions: I like
it! I got it about 250 miles from home and it was a pretty sweet ride
back.
It was a theft recovery bike that had the fairing removed by the
dirtbags. The guy I bought it from had purchased it from the insurance
company and replaced the fairing. Mechanically it's in excellent shape
but there are a couple minor things that need addressing:
1. Fuel gauge doesn't work. It's getting power. When I start the bike,
it goes to 1/2 tank and stays there regardless of the fuel level. Two
questions on this. Any hints on where to start looking? also, is the
low fuel light triggered by the same sender as the gauge? Since it's
injected and thus has no reserve, I really need to get this working to
feel comfortable.
2. Ambient air temp gauge not working. Either that or it was below
zero on Saturday. Again, any hints on where to start would be helpful.
3. Cruise control switch is broken. Anyone with a parts manual have a
part number for this?
4. There appears to be a bad connection somewhere in the stereo
system. When not running, the stereo works fine. When I'm riding, it
cuts in and out.
5. No headlight cover (lens). Anyone know a part number for this?
Other than those things, it's in really great shape. I'm really
looking forward to doing as much riding as possible on it.

Congrats! Nice bike.
Dunno anything useful about the issues you've got other than the
standard RTFM kind of advice that's no use as you're probably in the
process of getting the manual anyway.

Fuel gauge is fed from a float sensor attached (I believe) to the fuel
pump assembly in the tank. If the float arm is bent it won't get an
accurate reading.

Pull the POS out and replace it with an oil temp gauge because its wrong
anyway. Look in the fairing. The guy that put a fairing back on it knew
the gauge wasn't worth sh.t so he didn't hook it up. It needs 12 volts
to operate. Service manual will show you where to look.

Buy a parts manual. They're cheap.

What cuts in and out, the sound or the power to the stereo?

Buy a parts manual. They're cheap.

They're nice bikes, aren't they? And it seems more and more people
are discovering that.
Had to chuckle yesterday because I was talking to a woman in our HOG
chapter (with more riding experience than most guys have). She has
been ragging on the Road Glide for years (how ugly they are, etc.).
She recently bought one. Absolutely loves it - even the looks now!
She feels so sheepish about her previous remarks to everyone with Road
Glides that she published an "I'm Sorry" article in this month's
newsletter. I'm not going to let her off the hook that easily...

Hopefully that fairing's put on right. Some people don't realize
there are inner hooks to engage and stuff like that.
First job for any Road Glide owner, IMO, is to get familiar with
properly removing and installing that fairing. Figure out how to get
things fitted properly and don't over-tighten the screws. If you
should need to replace a headlight bulb on the road, you'll pretty
much need to remove the fairing.

In addition to the things mentioned already, maybe make sure the
wiring inside the tank isn't looped around the float, preventing it
from ascending/descending. I did that once, after taking the guts
outta there and putting together again. After all, who knows what's
been monkeyed around with in the case of a 'recovery' bike?

Screw it. It's not accurate anyway. Mine hasn't worked properly in 5
or 6 years now. Don't miss it.

Just talk to the parts person at a Harley Dealer.

Parts person at a Harley Dealer again.

Totally agreed. The one on our bagger (2003 FLHTCUI) never worked.
Andrzej took it out and put something else there, maybe an altimiter
or something. Compass? I can't remember.

Maybe some enterprising individual should come up with a decal to fit
in it; something like "# of Payments Remaining" for the needle to
point at.
I've had a home-made decal of sorts on one of my instruments for years
now: A small, circular patch of electrician's tape, precisely placed
so that the engine trouble light doesn't bother my eyes when night
riding.

I need one of those on the Road King.

I'm a big fan of the tape over annoying lights thing. (Phones, PVRs,
everything I buy seems to have an annoying light on it.)

Sorry man, it's a total loss. It's not really worth the money to fix but I
tell you what, you bring it here and I will work on it for free and do some
trading for parts. It might take a couple of years but I would get it back
to where you could enjoy riding it. :)

Think I saw one of those light covers on ebay the other day.
I'm personally looking for the light for one of my Tour Glides that is used
when taking the fairing off. When I didn't want one, I saw several, now
that I want one, the only one available has a bunch of guys in a bidding war
over it.
