After over nine years with the same employer , I have been laid off -
permanently , it appears . Commercial millwork has always been a cutthroat
market here , and the bunch of low-standard-I'm-only-here-for-a-paycheck
hacks that work there now have ruined the reputation I built (I ran this
shop before he got greedy and bought out a big shop) for quality products .
Money's tight , G.C.'s are being more selective , and my former employer is
a prick that's hated by most . And so work's down and I have been told my
services are no longer needed .
I give him six months . We shoulda stayed small .

Shirley , ya better set 'em up before they cut this card off ...

Not that specific site , no . But there's a ton of info on the 'net ,
including several email lists . I subscribe to the castinghobby group on
yahoo . Got my furnace built , cured , and I've been making ingots from
aluminum scrap for a week or so now . So far got some extrudium , some
castium , and some 6061 in ingots . As soon as I get my sand right , I'm
gonna start casting some trinkets ...

Mmmm , juju , yummy ! I've just been considering a way to break into the
home security game . Custom window guards , A/C surrounds , door jamb
re-inforcements ... when times are tight , more break-ins , etc .

Sorry about the loss of your job. But you are smart to look at other
options and consider what sort of companies do well in a down economy.
Places like pawn shops, storage facilities, and rental property
management companies can flourish.

I was a locksmith for over 10 years, so I know a bit about home
security. An easy way to get into the business is to work with
apartment complexes and bid on their security needs. They are always
rekeying, installing keyless deadbolts and patio door locks. The down
side is that you have to buy the hardware upfront, and sometimes wait
until 30 days after the job is finished to get paid. Kinda hard on the
little guy.

I'm thinking more along the lines of door jamb reinforcement , window A/C
security surrounds , and window bars . Already tooled up do do that in
limited quantities .
 I expect an upsurge in break-ins ...

Look , man . I'm unemployed now and can't afford to be spewing brandy all
over the screen . So knock it off !
To answer your question , you can't , but it makes a helluva marketing
ploy . Gonna make up a flyer with tear-off phone numbers (you've seen 'em in
the grocery stores , on the bulletin board) offering non-fancy security
solutions - window bars , A/C units , door jamb reinforcements .
Cheap , effective , ugly , and profitable to me .

Jeesh. There's a lot of that going around! Things will get better,
though. It always does. Might be a few years, but it'll get better. We
all gotta hunker down and keep our powder dry. (Don't know exactly what

It all ends in December 2012. Unless it doesn't. Mayan calendar.

Actual scholars disagree, some say it is the end of one epoch and the beginning of the
next, but then so is getting out of bed in the morning afaiac.

Not that it's your goal but I read an article recently that said a very high
(forget the exact %) of the S&P 500 companies were created during major
economic down cycles. It's when American creativity and ingenuity in
business are most valued. With all the companies going out of business, a
quality service oriented young business is most appreciated by established
customers.

Good luck whatever you decide. Life's short, ride often.

Are they still open ? For right now , it kinda leans towards

So sorry to hear that Snag, I know you took pride in the work you did

Actually , I think I might make up a few cards and scatter them in some
of the nicer neighborhoods near me - custom window guards and A/C security
surrounds . I suspect with times as tight as they be gettin' here ,
break-ins and A/C and condenser  thefts are going to lurch upwards .
Bout time those tools paid their keep .

Well sh.t. Crap. Fecal matter. Dog waste. That isn't the kind of news I
like to read.

I was laid off (OK...I was fired) once, and I ended up getting a much
better job. Did a stint at the local Radio Shack whilst things were
being put in order, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. You're
resourceful. You'll land on your feet.

You could become an entrepreneur and take out a small business loan. It
wouldn't have to be a big one...how much does a ski-mask and a sawed of
shotgun cost, anyway?

Seriously, I hope things work out. Put your card away cuz you can drink
on my tab all night.

I'm thinking about moving over to metal , got a couple of tools and some
ideas .
And the will to survive ...  did I mention I'm setting up an aluminum
foundry in my back yard ? Modified Gingery design , and I've already cast a

door looking for a job.  in the same time frame i have hired, fired and lost
over 50 useless warts on society whose only goal was to ride the clock until
friday.  over the past three months i have had an average of two or three
talented men a week walk in the door.  most of these had jobs where they had
dedicated years to the company store only to get sent home as soon as things
got tough.  now i am getting someone walking in the door begging for work
almost every day.

i told my guys that they were guaranteed their agreed on salary until may
savings were tapped and i went broke.  the captain here (me) plans to go
down with the ship and put the help in the last lifeboat.  one of my three
full time guys i had six months ago, one got himself thrown in jail three
times in a 90 day period.  i bailed him out twice and the third time i left
him in the pokey.  now he is jobless and incarcerated.  *idiot*

another of my full timers quit his job in july for a job that offered 2
bucks an hour more than i paid him.  now he is laid off from that job and
came back looking for his guaranteed 40.  i had to work not to laugh in his
face.  *idiot*

now all i have is one full timer and one part timer in addition to myself
and my wife who works out of the office at the house keeping the day to day
books.  which is actually quite lucky for me.

my full time guy is spending at least two days a week cleaning, organizing
and remodeling.  my part time guy is doing the same mostly.  i have enough
squirreled away to continue like this for at least a year without selling
another job if that is what it takes.  but i can't hire on any new folks
without being able to justify it.  work has slowed even for me.

folks that don't think far enough ahead to recession proof thier business
deserve to fail.  a new suburban for the wife, a hummer for themselves, a
bigger house with a pool, financed vacations and the like is usually what
kills a business when things get slow.  this is not always the case but the
bank ain't about to come get my paid for 11 year old truck.  no stupid
unneccesary payments allows me to honor a commitment i have made to my
workers.

yesterday i had two highly qualified men walk in looking for work.  one said
he needed a minimum of 15 bucks an hour with a guaranteed 40 to start.
right now he has a guaranteed zero bucks and hour with a guaranteed zero
hours per week; and he is wanting a guarantee from me?  the other guy said
he would do anything for anything.  he even said he would do day labor for
as little as 7 bucks an hour.  where were these guys when times were good?
where will they go the instant times get better?

the only full time guy i have is coming in and working about 30 hours a week
and he is still getting paid for 40.  he has lost the overtime he was used
to getting but he is not complaining even a little bit.  of those 30 about
one third is busy work.  he will get his 40 as long as he shows up and i am
still alive.  he will even get his Christmas bonus as always.  if the other
two hadn't thrown their jobs in the toilet right before the economic crap
hit the fan they would have the same deal.  luckily for me they were as
stupid (or did i mean greedy) as most people seem to be.

i hate it for the people that are losing thier businesses and thier jobs.
but in some cases both deserve it.  if you hold your boss up for too much
money when times are good guess where your going when times are bad.  of
course there is not much loyalty left in business.

in many other cases, people that gave thier souls to the company store are
getting screwed.

a good friend of mine just lost a job they had held for 19 years with a
perfect work record.  i have a cousin that has 27 years in with one of the
big unions that is supposed to be protecting them.  after a 27 year perfect
work record they had had two official reprimands in the past six months.
both completely unwarranted.  after three they are officially fired and lose
their really good 30 year retirement benefit package.  the two other people
in thier shop with over 25 years on the job have also received reprimands
for the first time in thier lives.  the union that they dedicated thier
lives to and paid dues to is purposely making a case to fire them before
they qualify for thier retirement package.  they will keep the 401k's but
loose the lifetime health benfits they were promised.

so if your boss is keeping you on in hard times, remember that in the good
times.  if your boss is giving you the heave ho, then have shirley pour you
a double on my tab.  the sad thing is folks are blaming the current
president for our situation.  if he is responsible, i wonder how he had so
much power as to trash the japanese economy, the european economy and what
looks like the chinese economy to boot?  i think it is human greed that
caused this.  not just one particular administrations actions.  it is bigger
than that.

Large cabinet/millwork companies here seldom last more than eight-ten
years . It's always been a tough market , and tough economic times have
aggravated that . It mighta helped if we hadn't had two plant managers in a
row that were more intent on their own gain , at the cost of product quality
(bonus's for "saving money") . I say build a few , build 'em very very well
, and stay in business . He tried to mass-market semi-custom cabinetry , and
that market doesn't lend itself well to big shops . Doesn't help that the
owner and his right-hand -asslicker have been drawing huge bonuses , instead
of capitalizing the company . I hope he has many sleepless nights in the
future , trying in vain to prop up a dying business . Might be different if
the G.C.s around here liked him , but both guys are pretty much universally
laughed at and hated . That coupled with the decline in quality has
effectively killed the business .
I'm pretty sure a big part of all that new eqpt (like a $200k CNC router)
was bought on credit ... and he's sold most of the manual machinery at yard
sale prices . When the house of cards falls - and I'm betting it's less than
six months now - he's going to lose the whole shootin' match . Be lucky if
they don't get his house and cars too .

But I'll be busy doing small jobs , and doing them very very well .

My boss refrained from buying a table cutter for quite some time now,
I think he has made the right choice, even though during the busiest
times it would had cut production times down in the area of 70%
without adding any help,  what he did do though was give other people
a job, some part time yea, and some only for a short period (maybe a
couple month's) but none the less it had people earning a wage instead
of a 150,000.00 machine that would had cut the full time employees in
half year round and would had never need the part time help, plus he
still has his 150k instead of some other company.  Now if someone
would just make a smaller version of this cutter affordable that may
be a different story, I just cant see how they can cost 150k, a
reciprocating blade cutter with a marker on it should be able to be
made for far less today.

There are some out there that can be "home-built" for a lot less - driven

if you start working for yourself and need some piece work off a cnc router,
i would be happy to cut whatever you might need for next to nothing.  my
normal rate to run my router is 100 bucks an hour minimum, but for an RMH'er
i could probably do it for less than half that.  it might save you enough
time on some jobs to make it profitable if shipping doesn't eat you up.
having this in your toolbox without having to outlay the cash may help you
sell something you couldn't produce economically.

oh yeah, i am full 3D capable.  i can machine busts of people nature scenes
and the like.  here is a link to what my router/software package is capable
of:

http://www.artcampro.com/gallery/gallery_index.asp

our normal substrates are wood, high density foam, acrylic, corian,
aluminum, brass and bronze.

Shitty news Snag.  But to look on the bright side, if you stuck it out for
the next six months he'd have declared bankruptcy and you'd be on your a.s
with nothing in your pocket.  I've been laid off due to bankruptcy 3 times
before landing this job, and each time it ended up being a step forward

And that's probably part of the reason I'm in the first cut - I may not
have a number , but I can act the part . I made an enemy of the boss'

so send me packin' .

You mentioned the possibility of going _back_ to work for yourself.
Then you already know the kind of effort that takes. Moreso today than
ever, I reckon. Looking backward too much, especially if you're
looking for satisfaction in the troubles of another, can be
distracting.  Unsolicited advice: don't bother. (If you happen to

The story of most businesses - if it's only a few people you're normally
able to survive, if you go all OCC with the big building and lots more

Way , man , way . I kinda figured layoffs were coming , but I was
absolutely pole-axed when I was the first to go . The man has no feelings .
He has only his greed , which is how we got to this point . I bet he lays
awake nights wishing we were still in that three man shop , with a tenth the
overhead he now has . What's sad is that the increase in income was not

Well hell, the former comany owner here was the same way, layoff's were a
natural occurance to meet the bottom line, for a company that has only 6,000
employee's we had 2 corporate jets, a NASCAR (truck) we sponsered (his son
was the driver) and a nice golf course in Casa.
I'm hoping this will eventually be a good thing for ya Terry,  I know lots
of folks here that got laid off, never looked back, and are doing quite
well. We wish you only the best man and don't hesitate if you need ANYTHING.

You have grit, know-how, and friends. It is gonna be tight for awhile, and it
will take some self-discipline to greet each day bright and early just like
when you were working for someone else. I've been laid off several times, and
so am familiar with a little bit of what you are dealing with. A big
advantage you have is the willingness and ability to go out on your own hook,
rather than looking for another employer.
With your foundry setup and your cabinetmaking skills --> patternmaking
skills you can do some custom casting and one-off jobs that a big shop can
not afford to do. There is a great deal of satisfaction and a mile wide smile
when you shake out the flask and see that shiny metal thing that did not
exist before. It is one thing to be a machinist. It is a whole 'nother smoke
to be a machinist who can make a pattern, ram it up and pour the metal, and
then do the finish machining as well. You can be a complete package, and I am
excited for you! Hot damn!
Please remember... sand floor, infra-red protection for your eyes, and a
decent fine-particulate mask, or very good ventilation. Did I mention the
infra-red protection for the eyes?
I know it might be a stretch, but if you find yourself in northern Minnesota,
I'm in the Two Harbors phone book. Please feel free to give me a call if you
like. The hospitality is always on.

Don't get in here much these days due to the sh.t access I have
through my various avenues, so I'm late in raising my glass to you
Terry.  I hope something comes your way soon.

It may already have ... got some things in the works , but none of them
involve me working for someone else .
I've been in business before , looks like I will be again .
