Having a sore shoulder is keeping me off bikes......damned annoying. I
haven't been for a ride for a week, with the last one being a short ride
on the KTM with every bump in the road giving me grief. I had to admit
defeat and head home. But, it's better than dealing with what a mate had
to in the weekend...........

........................................................
" Hi lads

Was out for a wee ride on the way to Taupo race track when the
unthinkable happened…

The Triangular linkage that holds the suspension dogbones to the
swingarm and shock sheared in half while I was doing about 120-140kph
around a sweeping left hander. a.s felt like it dropped out of the bike
like it dropped into a pothole. Bikes rear just slipped away and I was
on my a.s sliding across the oncoming traffic and into a banking. Bike
hit nose first and I stopped in the grass a meter before the banking.
Lucky for me there was nothing coming at the time. Shortly after a semi
and trailer rolled on by… gulp!

Worst of it, looks like no insurance, cos I’m a knob and didn’t send
in the forms 6 mths ago when I got the quote. Bugger!

But…. At least I’m not injured, or dead!

For those of you with Aprilias, this is not the first link to fail. So
check yours!

And anyone else with photos and vid clips from the weekend, please
email to me in high res. Ta.

 Cheers

Not a good look! Oh well, he can go park the '06 wreck next to his '04
wreck (trackday bin.....again, no insurance)

nah, it wasn't me, it was a mate......after looking into it a bit more,
so far three '04 or later model Aprilias have had this linkage breaking
happen (that the Aprilia forum guys know of).....the earlier models had
'beefier' linkages and seem to be OK (but I'm taking mine off for a
crack test and maybe get some steel ones made up!?)

Is it worth risking the bikes reputation over the saving of a few grams
of weight?....not from where I'm sitting!

Maybe they are designed to be too track oriented and can't handle the
punishment the road can hand out.........

Well, I either look for a pair of buttocks on the metal surface.  :)

OR

I take the bits to the local NDT man so he can do Dye pen. for me.

Dye penetrant inspection (DPI), also called liquid penetrant inspection
(LPI), is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to locate
surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics,
or ceramics). Penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials, but
for inspection of ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is
preferred for its subsurface detection capability. LPI is used to detect
casting and forging defects, cracks, and leaks in new products, and
fatigue cracks on in-service components.

I must admit that while I was browsing through the 'Bike Trader' looking
for a trail bike for my older boy (they grow fast once they hit their
teens!) I was stopping and checking out the Harleys. The new 1200
Sportster looks good in black, and the new 'custom' as pretty cool as
well....but for a mere 15K NZ there is a guy importing late '80's
1340's......ex cop bikes and the big tourers with panniers. A lot of
bike for the $.....but for another 3-4k I'm looking at the first of the
'Fat Boys', which I've always had a soft spot for.

I don't know how smooth these older bikes are (vibration wise). This
bloody torn rotator cuff in the shoulder is getting looked at in a week
by the specialist, if he doesn't have a 'quick fix' I might as well
start looking at V8 cars again! The hip replacement has been approved by
ACC as well but it's no good getting that done until I can use my arm
for crutches/walking stick again.

Moam , moan, bloody moan.....see what happens when I don't get my
motorcycling fix!! :)

Maybe I have hit that age/physical level to warrant a Harley (Ural with
sidecar?).....a bit sooner than I was expecting.

Maybe you could get a nice RV ???  :-)

Yeah, baby, just imagine the endangerment I could cause with that! It
would be a hit with the other guys.......a big saving on motels,
carrying spare petrol etc.....

The microwave would have to go.....Iv'e never trusted them since I found
you could get 'microwave leakage detectors' many years ago. (Call me
paranoid). The problem with RV's is that they cost as much as my house!

You rent yourself out as the chase vehicle/rest area.
Think income.
If these guys can afford to bin their bikes and get new ones they can
pitch in for your costs.

There IS no quick fix for a torn RC.
It needs to be repaired and immobilized for at least 3 weeks followed
by a fair bit of rehab. (That's for a partial tear)
That's once you actually work your way to the front of the queue.
If you're lucky, it won't be torn, just abraded, and they can fix it
in a week. That's what I had. Well, that and arthritis.
That's why I had to trade the K100RS for a Harley in the first place.

I know all about shoulder pain. Have a doc look at it and do as much therapy
as possible before even considering surgery. Not sure if you've got a bad
rotator cuff or if you have shoulder impingement like I did but believe me,
it'll never be the same after surgery.

One thing though, after all the PT I've had, my shoulder actually feels
better after a long ride. Something about the vibrations maybe? Dunno but it
does.

Therapy first, surgery last (if at all!).

The GP reckons it's a torn rotator cuff that should heal itself in a
couple of weeks....that was a couple of months ago and it's just
steadily got worse. If I keep my arm below my shoulder it's not too bad,
but something as simple as reaching out for a jug of water, I get a
shooting pain.....not always though.....a real confidence sapper!.

The specialist will have a look at the x-rays to make sure it's not
something else.....

I buggered it by loading the Aprilia onto my ute after the chain had
snapped......me and a mate were doing well, but it slipped off tha plank
when it as almost on the tray, so I just put my shoulder into it and
gave it a final shove......with a big ouch!

Even with anti-inflam pain killers I haven't had a decent nights sleep
since.

Well there goes my 'quick fix' idea then!  :)
I'm not too keen on doing exercises that hurt.....some say, no pain, no
gain, while others say if it hurts, I could be doing more damage, with
others saying acupuncture is the answer......I'm easily confused so I'll
just leave it to the specialist and follow his call.

I had a related problem, and they gave me something that
looked like a bra on backwards - an adjustable strap thing that locked
my shoulders back, and forced all movement of the shoulders to almost
cease.  That, coupled with an anti-inflammatory RX, let the muscles
have time to heal without getting constantly rubbed.  Totally
irritating to wear, but it did the trick in a few weaks.

That sounds good.....Anything has to be better than how it is. I might
need two, one for the shoulder, one for the saggy man boobs!  :)

Your GP's an idiot.
Tendons don't heal themselves, they have to be held together and
allowed to heal with no pressure on them. (The RC is tendons)
The nature of a tendon is that it pulls apart. That's the way it's
designed. The muscle contracts and pulls on the tendon.
That's why it and the muscle roll up into a little ball if you tear
the tendon right through.

The more you have chroonic inflammation in the tendon, the easier it
will tear. The longer you work it while it's torn, the more it will
tear.

>The specialist will have a look at the x-rays to make sure it's not
>something else.....

Can't see tendons on an X-Ray. You need an MRI.

If it's strained or abraded therapy will help but if it's torn, only
surgery will help followed by therapy.
If it's abraded you still need surgery to clean it up and possibly
open up the acromion (the bone the tendons pass through)
That takes far less time to heal and therapy isn't really needed.

Try with acupuncture with two points
LU 10 and one cun below ST 36 this may solve the problem in 2 minutes
if theacupuncturist is a professional

I've spent the last 7 weeks recovering from a completely ruptured
Achilles tendon. I find copious quanties of single-malt is far superior
to any anti-inflammatory on the market.

Trying to figure this out... in NZ you drive on the left hand
side of the road IIRC. So if wiping out on a sweeper results in
sliding on a straight course tangential to the curve of the road
at that point, on a left sweeper you'd slide on a long diagonal
across the road, and right through the path of oncoming traffic
as the writer mentions later on (!)
