If you gotta crash

Kid on a Duc had a minor crash up at Alices yesterday.
He apparantly hit a pothole at low speed, somhow lost it,
went over the bars while the bike slid and wedged under
a parked car.

The rider was wearing good gear and appeared to be
no worse for wear apart from some scuffed boots
and clothing. The bike had frame sliders and came
out not too bad except for a broken clutch lever, mirror,
shifter and sidestand switch.

The bike would start in neutral but as soon as it was
put in gear, the sidestand switch killed the engine
even with the sidestand retracted. A friend dragged
out a multimeter. There were three wires, one ground,
one +12 and one floating. After much debate about
wire color and circuits, somebody finally suggested
connecting the floating wire to ground and the bike
then started.

There was enough clutch lever left to operate, but
the shift lever was too short. Somebody suggested
an allen wrench as an extension. We dug up a
hose clamp and some tie wraps to lash the allen
wrench to the end of the broken lever and it
held together well enough to shift.

As I was putting on my gear, the kid took off and
headed home, after thanking everybody who helped
patch the bike back together. Nice to see the occasional
crash with a more or less happy ending.

Nice report.  I can't wait for next Sunday.  But at least I don't PLAN on
crashing. hehe.

Thanks for the route tip.  The road looks good on google maps.

I could go either up or down the road.  I usually prefer up a twisty road,
what do you think?

Oh yeah, is Barb's fish shack still going in Half Moon Bay?  I always liked
the fresh fried Lingcod there.

Either direction is a nice ride. I usually ride down to
the coast myself, partly I guess because the uphill
traffic tends to be going slower. This is a road that's
about 1.5 lanes wide and you have to watch out for
an occasional car going the other way.

I love Tunitas because it's one of those cool shady
mountain roads with big mossy redwoods all the way
down the hill. Lobitas is an equally windy goatpath but
more open, with horse properties and gardens on
the roadside.

I'm not familiar with Barb's. I'll have to look for it.
myself. There's also Duarte's tavern in Pescadero,
the Davenport Inn, Alice's on skyline, Henflings,
Ciao Bella and the Black Forest inn in Ben Lomond,
Scopazi's and the Boulder Creek Brewery in Boulder Creek
and any number of places in Santa Cruz of course.

Yup, too many end up the other way. Good on you guys for helping the
young man out. That's what riding is all about.
