Will you take "The Pledge"?

Over in AMS there was/is a poster that was/is considered to be a bit, to put
it politely, "whacked".

Then he went over the top and started threatening lawsuits.  At that point
many of us took "the pledge".  And thus all his posts were just ignored, not
kill filed, just ignored.  Conservatives, Liberals, Harley riders, Duc
riders, many of us put aside our differences and took the pledge.

There are relapses, but for the most part the pledge has been kept.

A poster here in reeky crossed the line of acceptable behavior, he has
kicked a well respected man while he was down. [1]

Will you take the pledge to ignore the pissant non-rider? [2]

[1] further explanation should not be necessary.
[2] we can get back to our internal flame wars amongst real riders.

LOL I had forgotten about that.....I see TTT still posting so he didn't
end up in jail.  :)

The AMS poster (to give him a little credit) does not morph his on-line
name.

I know it is hard, but take the new pledge. Please.

What a pompous, hollow, meaningless gesture. Will you chastise and make
pariahs of reneg'ers? Frame the list of pledges as a petition against
insanity? No thanks. As with matters of worship, I'll practice censorship as
I see fit and according to my conscience. I don't see a need for your
guidance or consent.

No prob.  That's what they're there for.  Too bad Bryan
doesn't know how to use his.  I don't morph ( except in the RARE case,
as a few years ago, when some a.shole decided to flood-forge me all
over the place, thus I ended up with the variation I use ever since
then ), because I respect everyone's right to not have to read my
bullshit if they don't want to.

I wasn't aware Brian noogies anyone over me.  I think it was
probably George Bush's doing.  Him or Rove, most likely.

It's not because I'm f.cking nuts, I'm sure.  The doctors told
me so.  They said I'm perfectly normal, it's just everyone else that's
a little bit 'off'.

It's not censorship. The person being shunned is not prohibited from
posting. Merely (most of) the rest of the community decides to not
listen. I've seen this applied in other newsgroups, especially to
hysterical one-issue posters who thrive on attention. You don't have to
participate in the shunning, but at the risk of ending up as one who
contributes to the reasons for it.

Sorry about the one liner. I owe you better.

I should trust more in group dynamics, but something about Bryan... This
isn't the first time I've reacted "violently" to his remarks. Pompous almost
sums it up, but I still can't quite put my finger on just what it is. I
didn't even know I had a button wired that way.

The tempest in a teapot was P's comment -- singular -- about a certain Jag
and antique bike collection. That's hardly a cause for censureship,
certainly less so than calling on others to join sides in a strictly
personal disagreement. The hoped for result is to silence the voice, or at
least render it irrelevant. If that's not censorship, I don't what it means
to censor.

I'll stand by my "pompous," and raise it a "petty". <nods> I think that sums
it up. Thanks for listening.

It isn't "strictly personal" at all: Brian would have to be alone in
detesting .p for that to be true, and this thread should demonstrate
clearly that *that's* not the case.

> The hoped for result is to silence the voice, or at

Easy one: to shun someone is to simply stop listening -and replying-
to his rants. To censor him is to not allow him to post those rants in
the first place.

Since this is an unmoderated newsgroup, we don't have the power -not
should we- to censor him, but shunning is a tradition that goes way
back before the advent of newsgroups, and you even proposed a mini-
version of it yourself not long ago when you suggested that you and I
agree to plonk each other.

-------
Yup. Self moderation works, emphasis on self. Who can object to that?

Yep, also, to the unmoderated group. And therein is the "problem". How do
you censor an unmoderated group, short of defacing it by cancelling
messages? When stuffing his literal fingers into his literal ears, if he
even tried, didn't work; when logical discourse showed him less well
equipped; and when outright flamage and taunting fails, where does he turn?
Does he look to himself and maybe pick his game elsewhere? No, Bryan picked
up his cellphone and appealed to the authorities -- us, in this case -- to
settle his dispute. It's the cry of the weak willed, weak minded, and
self-righteous. Ultimately, it's not far at all from the thinking that
polarized us so strongly on the cigarette missile incident.

Was he looking for moral support on a matter of importance? No. Simply, P
gets under his skin, apparently in much the same way Bryan's sniveling gets
under mine. In my mind, it comes down to this: the rightness of your
position doesn't matter when you can fetch your big brother to come kick
some butts. It's the gangsta mentality, and I won't brook it.

Would it matter if I agreed even the slightest with his position? You
already know the answer to that. How much prompting do *you* need to speak
your mind?

So, what's the point in asking for a group wide boycott if not to censor?
And I do mean censor, not just censure. I can't find one.
Bob Myers - 24 Sep 2008 22:33 GMT
> So, what's the point in asking for a group wide boycott if not to censor?

Obviously, to encourage a change in behavior.  And as has
already been mentioned, it can't possibly be "censorship"
unless you have some way to prevent someone from speaking
their mind.  It's just a reminder that none of the rest of us
HAVE to listen, or to encourage certain behaviors by
responding to them.

You hear that Bryan? Now I'm a millstone. Last time I got touring with
you through Utah if thats the kind of rep actual riding gets me....we
can't have anyone around here actually riding...lets all post spam,
racist crap, whine like Henry about nonsense or diss some guys who
don't ride out of their subdivision.

You know I have met Bryan and ridden with him on a couple of occasions
and I like the guy. He is great company on the road and a fun guy to
ride with.

All of that said my feelings about cross posting are on record and
having Troy The Welsher offer up his support really isn't helping his
cause much.

Since when am I responsible for what Troy posts?

If you haven't noticed, I haven't crossposted in quite a while, just
to keep you happy.  Apparently that's not working.

Who I associate with?  You mean Calgary, Thumper, Turby, Mark O, Chuck
R, Sleazy and Troy.  Regardless of their feelings toward me I am glad
to have met an rode with each and everyone of them.

And I didn't "tell" anyone what to do.  I made a suggestion, that is
all.

Hey, there is NO comparison between Filbert and Milligan. Filbert sea-
gulled AMS since 2000 with his "lay 'er down" bullshit.

Filbert is obsessed with exacting revenge upon on the "church" of
Scientology, while Milligan is just an smart aleck most of the time.

Get real. Milligan gave Thumper a well-deserved scolding over his
gambling obsession.

Hey, I do ignore his trolls 98% of the time, but he hit the nail on
the head this time.

Hey, whatever happened to your private "Actual Riders" newgroup?
Couldn't you and Paul arrange to hook up using that group?

WHAT!!!  In between all the spam, off topic nonsense and Henry not
getting laid anymore ( thereby returning with HIS nonsense to
contribute to the general noise level) , I missed a good "kicking a
man while he whined alot" fest?

I haven't paid any attention to him in about 3 months, maybe a bit more. Why
should I anyway? Nasty, mean-spirited, and he doesn't ride.

Case closed, IMO.

Well...yes and no.  I'll continue as I've already been doing -- ignoring
his wacked-out posts but not necessarily the sane ones, just by way of
positive reinforcement.

In other words, ignore the posts, not the poster.

Never heard such a load of sh.t in my life. I was always told that
foul mouths just mean you are so pissed that words escape them...such
as when describing that c.nt "P". I'm at a loss to effectively
describe a non-riding loser like him in a manner appropriate for such
an overblown cockbiting bitch.

Outta curiosity , how fast have you had yours ? Da book said that it
topped out at 110-120 , but I had mine up to 130+ one night coming up the
San Diego Freeway . Tucked hard into the tank , I wuz !!
And I'm not above issuing an expletive or two myself , I just wanted to
tweak the non-ridin' pussybitch's nose a bit . sh.t , we got Nathan W.
Collier over at RMH , I'd trade him for .p any day . At least .p can be
funny from time to time . Gnat is just plain pathetic vitriol .

Heh , I got  SOHC CB750's in the back yard . Well , one CB and a coupla
partly-to-mostly disassembled parts bikes . It'd run if I gave it a little
attention , but we got two that run , and I'm the only one that rides ...

lol, tell me about it my first two were a Titan and a Jawa Trail 90.
BIG difference. Bigger difference than between a LS650 and a GL1000
(current ride) I've done distance on the Titan and the GL1000 and felt
little difference. Not even the annoying buzz many reported on teh
Titan...well I didn't find it annoying anywho.

Yeah, .p is opinionated and cutting in his remarks but, really, that
can be applied to a lot of people here.

I don't follow much of the arguments he gets involved in, but it
appears to me that:

1.  They're usually on political subjects
2.  He does provide facts to back up his points (and they're often
ones that wouldn't otherwise be heard in this overwhelmingly liberal
setting)

As for him being a former (but not current) motorcyclist...  Well, if
some people want to deluge this *international*, *motorcycle*
newsgroup with American political debates, I don't see why being a
currently-riding motorcyclist is suddenly so crucial.  Quite honestly,
we don't exactly have high standards here anyway.

There's way worse actors here than .p.  But that's just my opinion.

Battling a bout of the flu right now.  I better make a bag of my own.
