Noise complaint

.p.jm@see_my_sig_for_address.com - 27 Sep 2008 19:27 GMT Subject: : Noise Complaint at Luke AFB, AZ
Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back.
Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall. When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit.
**The complaint:**
'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base: Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at 9:11 a.m, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet.
Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special? Any response would be appreciated.'
**The response: ***
Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' (Letters, Thursday):
On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four-ship fly by of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques.. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.
At 9 a.m.on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.
A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.
The letter writer asks, 'Whom do we thank for the morning air show? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.
Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you.....Jesus Christ, and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Perhaps Jesus "offered" to die and go to heaven for you, but Buddha offered to *not* go to heaven, but to return, again and again, to teach. But since Buddhism is not the official religion of the US Air Force, we get a Christian Sunday school lesson instead.

You seem to have a problem with dissenting opinion .p Since the story book says that Jesus died, not voluntarily either as I recall, almost 2000 years ago, I highly doubt that it was for me.
While American soldiers may offer to die in the cause of freedom, it has rarely happened in the past 50 or so years. Mainly they have died in powermongering exercises in far off lands which had no intent to take away the freedom of Americans. Becoming involved in other countries civil wars is definitely not in the best interests, let alone the interests of freedom, of the average American.
OTOH, I can quite see the point of the quoted article. The base was there first and likely is the main, if not sole, reason for the properity of the neighbouring towns. If possible, it probably would have been better to do this flyover in a less populated area, a more appropriate time or at least with enough publicity that everyone would have known it was coming.

It woudl really have to classed as a suicide, I think. I mean, if he KNEW in advance that he was goingt o be 'killed', and did nothing to prevent it, in fact went to it willingly ......
Then again, he also 'knew', according to the story, that it was only for a couple of days, then he'd be alive again. So, it was more like a 3 day nap, really. So, maybe he 'took a 3 day nap for us'. I dunno.
I mean - if I meet some homeless guy, and give him the very last dollar in my wallet, I could say 'I gave him my last dollar' - but does it really count if I knew I was going to have to stop at the ATM on the way home anyway and get some more ?

Alas for you, Grant Rosensteel isn't a real person, nor did anyone in the Air Force write the above paragraph. It's just another of those religious right wing distortions/web hoaxes that invariably pop up just before elections. I guess it would be if all one cared about in the world was politcs and cults...I for one have more important things focusing my concerns. The primary concern of the post is more important than petty concerns about power over others (politics) or whose cult is right and whose is wrong. <cocks head to the right> I mean really who cares about power and petty gods when you have people telling you that just because they moved in next door and want to run you off becuase they don't believe you should keep doing what you do. Whether it's an airport, race track etc. Petty cry babies that move in knowingly next to such places ought to just leave. If you don't like noise WHY move in next door to an airport. If you don't like smell why move next to a feed lot or dump and so on and so forth. These type of people are the Not In My BackYard types. They are the reason there hasn't been a oil refinery built in over 20 years. They are the reason no new reactors or modern power stations have built in decades. Bullshit. You got sucked in just like .p and just don't want to admit it.
If you'd looked at the real story in Snopes you wouldn't still be pissed at the guy who wrote the complaint because you'd know that the Air Force officers who replied to his letter did so politely, explaining what the jets were doing, and he (the complainer) wrote an abject public apology in reply to them.
In real life, complaints about jet noise are a fact of everyday life, and sometimes they're justified and sometimes they're not. (For instance; the Navy guys who used to fly fighters up through the Kern Trench Wilderness Area at near supersonic speeds and at only a couple of hundred feet of altitude are a good example of noise complaints that were fully justified. Last I heard, that ended when the China Lake base commander put his foot down.)

I am focusing on one thing and one thing only. I already explained the what and why. Morons that move in next door to a place that is inherently loud and can't help it that the noise travels. You know train yards, race tracks, airports etc...
