Maybe you missed the line that stated, "...the European Commission would like SafeRider to become mandatory on all new road bikes within five or six years."

What the EC "would like" is a long way from being the same thing.

Likely they haven't tried that one yet is enforcement.

You have a point. I mean, ABS is mandatory on cars now in Europe (the same in the US, I assume?).
OTOH, who remembers the attempts to make leg protectors mandatory on EU bikes?

For that matter I can put a all new motor in the pickup (I keep it for when I find a broken harley on the road). <GR&R>
it's a treefity wit' a turbohydromatic 400. I have access to a mo' betta' trans that's rebuilt. sheit metal? Heck I can buy all new everything...that truck could out last the sphinx. On star? ON STAR!?! WTF do I need that sh.t for?

Then I wont give damn..MAKE me. Go ahead and try, I've been dodging unenforcable and illegal laws for decades and I refuse to change my ways. From bootlegging to the comstock laws it's been a family traditon.
Anyway if it isn't OEM they can't force it on you. That's called precident...I've vehicle right now that they can't force me to change. Adding a nanny from GM isn't going to happen and I'll bury the first bastard that tries...for that matter if I want a new car and it has onstar, then I'll go to another dealer OR I'll disable it...with cutting torch in necessary and if the government doesn't like it they can watch the steel circle and wait for the camera flash.
Or in simple terms "over their dead bodies I'll have onstar or anything like it in/on ANY vehicle I own"

The follow-up step to that is an auto-govern / auto-speed-limiter throttle over-ride to make SURE you don't speed, and to auto-generate a speeding ticket if you try, ala 'red light cameras'.
Perhaps auto-reporting to your insurance company , to put them on alert to raise your rates by 500 %.

Speed limit mapping is already being installed in cars. So is collison detection.
'Curve speed warning' as a new one on me.
But all of these strike me as being particularly useful safety aids.

They'd be kind of pointless in the US--many states don't allow headsets or helmet speakers and I can't see where having the thing shout out its warnings loud enough to be heard over traffic would be particularly beneficial--all I need when I'm in the middle of dodging a truck is some loud alarm going off.

I neither use nor particularly like the things, but that strikes me as daft.
