Troy the Troll - 28 Sep 2004 02:31 GMT Yo Mike...I know you went out and got a high quality Toyota when you thought you were getting a clunker domestic Pontiac. Well, I've got you beat, I went out and did something REAL stupid, I spent all morning trading in my Mazda mini van on something...wanna guess how stupid I was? Well, at least ONE of you has some taste... I've had good luck with my American cars over the past decade. My '92 Explorer was retired with 192,000 mi on it. It was in need of a tranny when I got rid of it. But the only thing I've ever done to the damn thing was replace the front lockouts once, and the standard oil changes.
My Dodge Ram had a tranny replaced by the previous owner, but I've had great luck with it. My only complaint is it uses more oil than I'd like if I tow heavy loads with it, and the brakes sucked untill I added some carbon metallic pads. But that thing has rarely been driven this summer. I think it's moved from it's spot in the driveway 3 times since the end of June.
The one thing the America cars lack, are GOOD trannys. They all suck! I was amazed that my Exlorer's lasted as long as it did. But I did do a tranny cooler on it, and changed the fluid every 20K on it.

I put 200K on a toyota 4x4 and it left me with the original fuel pump, starter, a/c compressor and a host of other things that should have died, but didn't.
The only good thing about this clunker is I know all about the tranny issues already and had the TSB in my hand as I bought the car. Not that Ford is going to get it RIGHT this time mind you...just that I'm prepared for the usual "gee...you drove it off the showroom floor and the tranny broke" surprise....

Tell me about it. t-45's in Mustangs replaced by tremec 3650's both of which have a habit of self destructing around the 2nd gear syncro
Of course...it requires more than half a decade of these things blowing up for Ford to get around to fixing it...why am I not surprised?
Steve Mackay - 29 Sep 2004 01:16 GMT >>>> Congrats on the American car purchase :) >>> [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > starter, a/c compressor and a host of other things that should have died, > but didn't. You had way better luck than my father-inlaw then. His 93 Toy 4x4 had numberous problems, ranging from a couple of bad lifters, fuel pump, and some rear brake load balancing gizmo that he ended up cutting a hole in the bed to get to. No, that's probably not typical. I did end up giving him some sh.t over the fact that he told me "shudda' bought a four runner" when I picked up the Exlorer. :) Granted, I DID have better luck than average on the exploder... , as he had worse luck than average on the toy. His next vehicle, a '99 S10 4x4 needed a tranny at 40K.

I had several friends with the 5.0 'stangs right out of highschool. Now, I thought the tremacs were more reliable? No?
My brother picked up a Cobra back in '98. He took it home, beating on it on the way home, it developed a rod knock. Took it back the next morning. They actually gave him a new car...
> Of course...it requires more than half a decade of these things blowing up > for Ford to get around to fixing it...why am I not surprised? HALF a decade? Hell, they were having 5 speed problems since 1986 IIRC.

I had several friends > with the 5.0 'stangs right out of highschool. Now, I thought the tremacs > were more reliable? No? The TSB I found relates specifically to the tremec 3650. The t-45 had junk syncro's as well, the TSB for the 3650 relates to 2001-2003 5 speeds. I've got the same tranny in a 2004, so I'll cross my fingers and hope that even a ford service tech can figure out that a bad 3650 in a 2003 is the same as a bad 3650 in a 2004. We'll see.
> My brother picked up a Cobra back in '98. He took it home, beating on it > on the way home, it developed a rod knock. Took it back the next morning. > They actually gave him a new car... Sounds like a domestic. I swore I wouldn't do this again....but the wife would not stop. I don't mind the engine at all, quite nice actually, plus on a trip I got nearly 30mpg out of the old one.
Thats all its really good for...touring. The suspension works well over gentle bumps on faster roads, enough power to run reasonable road speeds and enough torque to allow tall gears so it gets decent mpg. Nothing complicated about them, solid rear axles, reliable motors, pissant trannys. They've been making them on the same chassis for a few decades now...and they still aren't are reliable as a toyota corolla but at least they've ironed most of the wrinkles out.
> > Of course...it requires more than half a decade of these things blowing up > > for Ford to get around to fixing it...why am I not surprised? > > HALF a decade? Hell, they were having 5 speed problems since 1986 IIRC. I liked the old T5 in the 1990 Mustang 5speed I inherited along with the new wife way back when. Its one of the few reasons I was willing to get another one...THATS the one with the tranny problem last time....I've got my fingers crossed on this one.110 miles as of this evening and it hasn't blown up yet....a good sign in a domestic.

I'd rather have a GT than Mary's Corollla LE. Even though the Toy is a 2.0 I4 with a timing chain (not belt.) You'd be surprised how hard it pulls.
Anyhow, I'd rather have the 4.8 V8 than the 2.0 I4.

I test drove a Corolla...now THAT is what we should've got for an around-towner. I also looked real close at those VW diesels, but the for the money I don't think the GT is a bad car at all. As long as you know about the tranny and don't get too cranky about it if/when it happens, it makes a nice travel-mobile for 1 or 2 people, with emergency people or kid carrying capability in the back seat ( one of the reasons I didn't just go get an S2000 ), the engine is good, relatively understressed and can go a long time, makes nice power all over the place, the brakes are good enough for at least 2 or 3 full blown panic stops from 100mph ( don't ask me how I know ) it shifts okay usually, its just its another damn DOMESTIC.
Oh well....
It does have a cool stereo that any 16 year old would love. The entire trunk is filled up with speaker boxes and amplifiers....
