OK, so maybe I am a bit paranoid. I just got a good deal on a new
2003 RC51 that I should be able to pick up from the dealership next
week. Does anyone know if I should be concerned about going through
the break-in period in cold weather? I was googling around on the
net, and found warnings against breaking in those little RC engines
in extreme cold. They don't mention what extreme cold is considered
to be. So far I have not run across anything for full size engines. I
don't plan on riding when the temp is below freezing, but I do like to
ride all winter. I'm thinking I should be OK if I give the bike some
extra warm-up time.

I've bought more than half of my new motorcycle total between September and
January 1st, and have bought and broken in others during February as well.
Give it an extra 10 seconds warm up, and maybe an extra minute of run time
before you start horsing on it, otherwise it probably doesn't matter at all.

That is what I figure. All the warnings I found were for little RC
(remote control) model engines that probably just can't warm up enough
in the really cold weather. Never seen a bike or car manual that warned
against winter break-in.

Consider the temperature differential. The water temperature, if it's water
cooled, would be around 220°F which is really hot no matter what the outside air
temperature. Then consider the oil temperature, the temperature of the cylinder
heads, piston tops, exhaust valves, and headers. Those things will be quite hot
and will not care what the temperature is outside.

Your only concern is to monitor the thermostat that it keeps the temp above 180
F... because any lower means the water... a normal by product of combustion...
will not burn off and may contaminate the oil... some riders tape off portions
of the radiator to help higher temps... other than that I would follow

Yea, I'm giving that some thought. Bare minimum I like the idea of a
relatively early oil change.

I checked that site out. Pretty cool!
FWIW: A long time ago I learned to drive in a 68 Road Runner with the
383 in it. In the owners manual there were break-in instructions, and
they were almost exactly the same as what motorman prescribes for the
Dyno Break-in... No taking it easy for the first 1000 miles or whatever,
Just get it warmed up and get on it!
Go figure..

I know you are concerned with break in of your new RC51 but don't forget,
especialy on that bike, to break in the tires or you will be breaking loose
very easily. The combination of new rubber, well below recommended
operating temps, and the tall first gear torque of the 51 makes for an
exciting combination. Proceed with much caution for more than an extra 10
seconds into your ride!

Thanks, and I'll keep that in mind. Normally I wouldn't want to start off
with a bike that is so different from what I am used to (600 I-4) in the
dead of winter. But, I can't beat spending under $9 K for a new ('03) RC51.
The temps should get up to the 50's next week - that should help. No
after sunset or bad weather riding on it until I get a feel for it.

The short answer is "no". Don't worry about it. Good warm up and multiple
heat cycles will adequately bed the engine in the recommended 300 miles.
You can't hurt this engine.
