Touring Florida (high speed/long distance) on an XB during the heat of summer

I'm thinking of riding to Key West from Northern Alabama at the
beginning of August. I'm worried about being overheated. More
importantly I'm worried about my XB-12S getting overheated. I notice
when I ride on hot days here in AL at high speed down the highway my fan
cuts on. When I slow down I can hear it. I was under the impression that
my fan shouldn't need to cut on when going down the highway in top gear
because of ample air supply. I thought it should only cut on when I stop
and fresh oil is no longer being delivered to the heads. Could someone
please tell me if this is normal and/or my fears are well founded about
riding to Key West in the heat of summer?

Thanks!

Well I have no idea if your engine is air cooled, oil cooled, or
liquid cooled....from what you're describing, sounds to me that all
you have is a little oil cooler with a fan and that's it.

With that, you'd probably be fine on the highways around here, though
do watch out in the miami area as it can get VERY congested, 10mph
down I95 is not uncommon. And at that point in time...depending on the
time of day, it may run you into some trouble temperature-wise.

What day/time is best to avoid that congestion?

Well I don't live down in that area but..I'd avoid 8am-10am, 11am-1pm,
4am-6pm, basically the times people get to/from work and lunch time.

Go here for Buell related questions. www.badweatherbikers.com.  Hit
the Quick board.  You will get an answer within an hour or two.

I don't think you have to worry about the Buell overheating unless you
are at a dead stop for several minutes. If that is the case I would
shut the bike down.

Thanks.. You know it's weird but my fan cuts OFF when I slow down and it
can pull air over the rear cylinder. It only cuts on when I'm riding
hard/fast.

Which in the miami area....at the wrong time of day, is very likely to
happen...
