Greek Shipping Magnets - 28 Jun 2005 16:35 GMT >Walked out of my apartment this morning to go to work...bike is >missing... [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > >*sigh*.... It sounds like I'm a real a.shole but if you have theft this is the greatest thing that ever happened to you. Listening to your endless misfortunes with this bike was rather tiresome. You're either the unluckiest bastard that ever walked the earth (and should consider another sport) or needed to get that lemon out of your life ASAP.
And now it's gone. Now you can buy a real bike, something that doesn't attract the teenaged retard set like flies to manure. Something more appropo for someone who has the mental capacity to know what usenet is. Something that you can actually ride instead of moan incessantly about your latest misfortune. Believe it or not they're out there. Bike's that don't need constant fiddling to keep riding.
The R6 is an excellent trackbike. On the street you placed yourself in the same insurance and theft pool as some of the most mentally deficient people out there. Cheers!

>Well stated, son! Poor Steve has has nothing but hard luck with his >yammahopper. I may have had a little bad luck with the bike, maybe so. Though most my bad luck has been my own inexperience, which really is nothing to blame the bike for. And ultimately, it's just a machine, and a machine can be fixed.
But you know what...I love that bike. It literally is the only thing I had in my life that I actually valued....despite a few little misfortunes.
And, I've finally had it running flawlessly really....I mean really, with the work I've done over the past 2 weeks on it, it was just perfect....
And the next bike I get will be another R6 or R1...I haven't decided yet. Sorry but...I love yamaha's, and I love those two bikes...

I find the Honda kinda ugly and the Suzuki just plain Jane homely. And I'm sure while they all work great (on a racetrack), it wouldn't hurt Stephan to ride a couple of bikes built to ride in "off track" settings to get an idea of what REALLY performs well for the type of riding he actually does.

One may have a slight edge over another in 1 category, but then in return may have a disadvantage in a different category. I don't think there is one "best" bike. All of them have their pros and cons, and to me the only way any of them significantly stand out is the appearance, particularly as far as the yamaha's are concerned. I'm just so truly in love with the look of those bikes, and hey...I'm happy with the performance and I couldn't be more comfortable on the bike. And while I may have had some minor issues w/ the R6...it's never failed to get me back home. I can't count the accident since that was my fault.

Throttle control really...and that's one thing, I've never made a mistake on.
I wouldn't outright buy an R1....but I would like to take one on a test ride, and see how I feel so I can really make an educated decision wether or not I'd be ok with it or not.

Only 1 minor throttle control mistake can mess you up pretty good on an R1.

~kurt - 29 Jun 2005 06:15 GMT > But you know what...I love that bike. It literally is the only thing I > had in my life that I actually valued....despite a few little > misfortunes. I can believe that. My YZF600R was stolen April 2004. I had bought it a year and a half earlier after some hard times. It was my first bike, and I crashed it twice and fell off it once in the first 1000 miles.
At the time I was living in Denver. My bike was starting to look like something out of a Mad Max movie - but it ran fine. One day I came home to my apartment, and found it lying on its side - some piece of trash had knocked it over. So, then I shelled out the money to park it in the garage. That is one of the few good things about Denver. The weather sucks so much[1] it is easy to find an apartment with a garage.
In Sept '03 I moved to MD. The company was moving me - I told the truck driver I didn't care about anything else, just get my bike back in one piece. He actually spent an entire hour with me securing the bike inside the moving van.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find an apartment with a garage in Maryland. So, the bike had to sit outside. In early April, some neighbors knocked on the door - letting me know another a.shole had knocked my bike over in the parking lot. The front fender was smashed but no structural damage. I gave it a test ride in the rain - I was thrilled to be back on the bike.
One morning, in late April, I walked outside and the bike was gone. I know what it is like to baby a smashed up bike, try to keep it in good shape as it faces the bad weather all year long, work on it in the parking lot until you run out of sunlight, and run up and down the stairs because you forgot that one damn wrench - and then wake up one morning to find your pride and joy f.cking gone.
A month later my bike was recovered. The sack of sh.t riding it crashed trying to get away from the cops - totaled the bike. He was OK. The State of MD didn't do a damn thing to him. Oooh, 18 months of supervised probation. Give me a f.cking break.
I spent some time with the recovered bike in the salvage yard. Before leaving, I turned it's new switch (hotwire) to OFF, and saved the right hand bar end as a momento (unfortunately, I have no pictures of the bike - didn't own a camera during that time).
Two months later, my car was stolen. It was recovered a week later, with two arrests. The driver was a minor - the state of MD does not punish minors. I'm not joking - he didn't even spend a day in Juvie. The passenger was not charged at all.
My current bike is a 2003 RC51. I was without a bike for over 8 months. The RC51 cost me $250,000 - $240,000 for a garage that comes with a house, and $10,000 for the bike.
My rule is quite simple now. I will never own a bike again unless I have a place to store it. Even if that means getting a crap 1st floor apartment and bringing the bike inside every day. Either that or moving next to a self storeage lot. I hate owning a house, but that is the price I have to pay to keep a bike.
A friend bought a GSXR600 a couple months ago. It was stolen less than 10 days later from his townhome. He had it wired up to a lamp post or something and pratically pinned it in place with his car. They cut the wires, and made a mess of his car getting it out.
I'm going to be visiting my parents in Naples soon - all I can think about is I won't be around my bike for a week. I have a nice shiny new bike, but I still miss my old one.
- Kurt

Let's see now. Stephan runs over a traffic barrier and crashes and it takes him forever to get his bike back, and when he does get it back, it doesn't run right, then his seat lock sticks so he has to cut his helmet strap off to ride home and he goes out and crashes in the rain and he buys new tires and takes the bike back to the $tealer$hip where he'd had it fixed and they discover they left parts out of the rear wheel, and it takes forever to get to the point where it does run right, and when it does finally run right Stephan is thrilled to death and the bike gets stolen a few days later and Stephan calls his insurance company and they tell him that he doesn't have theft coverage...
And, I suppose Stephan has called the Orlando PD and reported the bike stolen, so he can't do any "creative insurance reporting" to recover his loss, but I'm sure Stephan is perfectly honest and would never resort to anything like *fraud* to make what goes around come back around to himself...
About the only thing I can suggest to Stephan at this point is to go down to the Orlando municipal court and file for a legal name change...
He can change his name to "Job" for about $50. His faith in the Gawd of Motorbikes has certainly been tested by now, and he wants another one!

Oh, one thing I forgot was when Stephan told us that he liked to hang around with a bunch of stunters in a parking lot in an industrial park. I'd bet that if Stephan showed up there tonight in a car and said nothing about the bike being stolen and watched to see which one of his stunter "friends" wouldn't look him in the eye, he'd know who the thief was that took his motorbike...

Really only been there two, three times....And nobody knows where I actually live. And that's actually been a few weeks now since I've been there last.
The one thing that DOES bug me is timing....right after I got all this stuff done to it....too much of a coincidence for my taste.
Thing is, while there are plenty people that know what I've done...nobody actually knows where I live. Not even my closest friends have even seen my place, or know its address, since I moved little over a month ago.
So none of these people would know where to find my bike...

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > So none of these people would know where to find my bike... Has anybody at the apartment building seemed to be unusally friendly and inquisitive, or did you notice anybody eyeballing what you were doing and acting unusally *disinterested*? That sort of stuff often works like Hannibal Lecter told Clarice Starling. "What does this man *do*, this motorbike thief? He *covets*. And how does coveting *begin*. We covet what we *see* around us everyday..."
When I lived in apartments with no garage, I arranged to park by my bedroom window and kept the motorbike chained up and covered with the window slightly open so I could hear anybody tweaking with it. One night some thieves came around and lifted up the cover and looked at it, then they tried to steal a Harley instead. So I moved to a safer place.
One night I heard some noise in the alley and a guy was trying to pry the seat off my brand new motorbike. It seems that he and his friends had seen me remove the seat and gas tank to hook up a wire that had fallen off the ignition coil. When I started the bike with the gas tank off, they figured there was some way to hot wire the motorbike under the gas tank.
I called the cops and they went over and questioned those guys who were all living in the basement of a rooming house. But the cops had nothing to go on to arrest one of them. They also broke into my van.
One day one of those guys told me that his buddy really wanted to steal my van. He said that the Mazda RX-7 sitting on the curb was in fact stolen by his friend. He told me that I better watch my van because his buddy really liked vans. He said I should park somewhere else.
I told him that I could see my van from my bedroom window and showed him my gun. I told him that I was a very good shot and could probably blow his friend's brains out with it. I went into my apartment and called the cops.
I gave them the license number and asked if the RX-7 was reported stolen. The cop wanted to know why I was even interested. I told him what the guy had said, The cop said he'd call me back.
A few minutes later, he called me back and said the RX-7 was stolen.
So, I asked him if he was going to send a tow truck out to retrieve the Mazda. He said that they would rather catch the guy driving the RX-7. I looked out at the curb and the RX-7 was gone. I never saw those guys again either...
About the only hope you have of ever seeing your Yamaha again is if the cops stop the thief while he's riding it, or if he abandons it and it gets towed away for illegal parking, or if you're lucky enough to track the thief down yourself...

They knocked on my door at 2am and I spent hours answering their silly questions and it all just amounted to nothing. Other times, I even had to defend myself with my fists a few times coming home late at night. Another time, faced with a few guys, I decided it was wiser to run:) I was told that murders happen around there practically every night and that I was lucky to be alive. Good thing I moved on.

See the other replies... you have to chain a bike like that your leg in some areas or it will get stolen because its in the kiddie crotch rocket category.
I hope it was insured for theft...in that case you have the opportunity to get something a little more sensible ...maybe a 350 Honda Rebel or something.. that wouldnt get stolen. Actually you have to pay to get those hauled off...if you had one of those you would still be riding today...but noooo you were NOT smart you got a CROTCH ROCKET instead.
All bikes are at risk however you need to chain them down and have an alarm at the least... or run an older slightly less likely to be stolen bike that looks like it came out of a blade runner movie... there are a lot of those in SF...with torn up seats, chopped up, the whole thing, rims motor tank and all painted flat black.,, liter bikes, with headers, cams, and killer rubber though.
I might do one up that way...get a badly salvaged bike, but with good motor and frame...wires hanging off, fairing gone... brackets and bars bent up... all beat to hell... it would be a good ride.
A man could ride that around campus and immm presss the gerlz... smokin man... cooool... laid baack...the hot number. and never clean it..
you could pull up next to a dweeb on a primo R-6...and let him hear your cams and headers workin'.... you could ask him...'Hey dooood, any parts on that thing fit this?'
... makes em' anally retentive.

Check out all the bike shops that are independent and sell used bikes. Place flyers w/the vin # out there. Fax a flyer to all bike shops in the area.
Did you at least have a cover on it? When I lived in an apt. I covered my bikes with a locking dowco cover, alarmed disc lock, etc.
Man, I feel for you. If one of my bikes got stolen, I would be armed and dangerous looking for it.

Since I live on the 2nd floor and don't have a way to store the cover right near the parking spot, I usually honestly don't cover it...

Sounds like your bike is jinxed from that sad recount by KK of your misadventures.
Keep an eye on Ebay, the bike will probably show up there and be parted out eventually...

Bike thieves are scum and I would be happy to slaughter them. Where I come from, it is just chronic. In Paris, every bike is bolted to a lamp post or such like. (ie when it is not being ridden or stolen:))

That said, do yourself a favor next time, learn from my error: don't leave bikes outside anywhere overnight, at least not on a regular basis. Scumbags prowl for them, nationwide, and word is it's much worse in the U.K.
After some stunter dingleberries lifted my FJ1100 in '91, subsequently recovered with little damage, I took to parking the bike inside the apartment. A bold step that nonetheless ended the problem, through my next bike: a Ducati 851. The 851 never spent so much as a night outside at the apartment complex where I lived seven years, SF Bay Area.
Yeah, I know: you're not rich, live on the 3rd floor, whatever. Please, just don't leave the bike out anymore at some shitty condo complex in the carport. They're stolen day in, day out around here (Puget Sound area) and it happens over and over, everywhere. Pay an extra few bucks for a garage, somewhere, live with the hassle. Or move to a house with some buddies and a garage.
Good luck: I've enjoyed your R6 saga and hope it turns up.

The brits call 'em FOAD chains. He needs one. With luck, the landlord won't flip when he chains his (next) bike to something solid.
