Keeping body & bike well for a  trackday!(long)

This is some weird chit here.. J Everybody tries to sign up for a trackday
as soon as it is possible for them. The reasons are, getting a spot cause
sometimes they fill up soon, and a lot of times, it is cheaper if you sign
up early.  Now here comes the dilemmaJ.  The bike and the rider have to stay
okay or they will blow that trackday. And that can't happen to a
track-junkie! :)That is how I see it. JThis is what happened to me on
Thursday Sept  22nd.

I am already signed up for a trackday at Summit Point on Sept 26th.  On
Thursday, because gas is so high, I ride my 12 speed bike to work a couple
days a week. I bike about 4 miles to the subway, and then a mile to work. At
the subway station where I get off, they have 6 flights of steep stairs.
Okay, I shoulder my 12 speed (23 lbs) and proceed to not walk, but run up
the 6 flights of stairs. No problem.. However, when I got to work, my right
knee is talking to me big time. Now, I am phucked. My knee is big as a
ballon and I am booked to do a trackday  in a couple days. The docs had
already told me to take it easy on the knee, because of my running past, and
they have drained it a couple times too. No time for a doctor. You people
have made me a track addict.:) I do some force rehab. I ice the knee
Thursday evening. Limp to work on Friday.Ice some more on Friday. I get some
movement. J

I just had a brand new set of Pilot Powers street tires put on the
RC51..Okay, time to scrub them in. Get on the RC, left turns are okay,
trouble with the right turns.  Okay, Saturday morning I am into a  heating
pad, and off to the gym for an hour in the whirlpool. Result more movement,
but the swelling is still there.  Okay, ride some more. Got about 50 miles
on the pilots, time go to the edges. I hit a left hand exit and take the RC
all the way down.. All good. Try the same thing on the right, and can't get
the ball of my right foot on the peg.  I need a little more movement..
Dammit.. Okay, I am still going to the track, and if the right knee doesn't
allow me to take make a right turn to the max of my ability, then I will
bang the left turns and coast through the right ones!! J

By the way, I was leary of doing anything to the bike or myself because of
thought of blowing the trackday.

Sorry for the long story, just had to vent this crap. J

BTW, don't laugh at this chit either..:)  You all know I am not dealing with
a full deck! J

Yeah...well....go get some decent tires already.....most of the rest of us
have already managed to smash up bikes on street tires, you figure its
necessary to add another to the list? Or should I say, in your case, crash
some MORE on street tires?

Quickly? QUICKLY! Its been all summer, and you are STILL slapping on street
rubber? You can afford other nice gear and custom trailers and stuff and you
are still skimping on TIRES?! Come on Coleman, surely you've learned enough
this summer to go fast enough to need better rubber?

Coleman's Pilot Powers are rated for track use and are a good tire even
though they are not "Pilot Race" . Have *you* used Pilot Powers on track?

Sporttechs were rated for track use. Yeech. The original Pilot sport was
claimed to have some trackiness to it. Yeech. The H2 series is claimed as an
occasional trackday tire, and I know people who have used it to race on, and
I'll sell you mine CHEAP.

Now they claim the same thing about the Power street tire? Okay....I even
know a guy who has used them at the track and thought quite highly of
them....but until I see people racing and using them regularly instead of
the Power Race tire? You will forgive my skepticism please.

If only because the LAST 3 times I've used tires claimed as track worthy,
they weren't. So being skeptical comes easy. Unlike the other 3 tires
though, I've actually gone out and soliticed opinions on the Powers, and
they are receiving a better rep than the last tires which claimed street and
track behavior. But I haven't matched that reputation with lap times, or
what ham fisted fat bastards can get away.

SuperCorsa's are real tires, and last a long time. Mine are only now going
away, a year after I installed them and hundreds of track miles.

That's a function of how hard they're pushed, natch. I get three days
from a set, at most.  This will be my third and last day on the
current set, though as I recall that included two rain days which
hardly counted.  So that will be five track days on Supercorsas.
That's pushing it.

Gotta be careful and avoid the false economy of taking those track
tires just a little too far, just "one more day."

Mine are now beyond that point. But I usually run half days, call it 40-60
miles at a pop, and less than half of their total time have been at much of
a real pace. I tend to agree with you, two or three serious runs, full day,
at a nice higher speed track, and while they will continue to work, they
don't work as well. But they still work better than street tires.

Are you kidding? Of course he needs the "W" rated "Race" model. Everyone
knows that a 650 carrying a quarter ton needs at least a 170 mph tire,
c'mon man.

Spoken like someone who HAS used Powers and came back and told us all about
how squirrelly they were for awhile. That doesn't sound like the race tires
I'd give 2 laps at Road Atlanta on a damp track and be done worrying about
them for the rest of the day.

These tires were right up there with my skill level, and more if I had it..
BTW, I got away with the knee too. The knee was still swollen this morning
for the first session. And after a few warm up laps, and was into the left
hand turns nicely, but couldn't get on the balls of my feet for the right
handers. However, by the 3rd session, I had willed the knee usable, and was
banging right hand turns good. I was concentrating on my body position, and
hitting the turn in points. That took my mind off the pain, and allow me to
bend the knee.:)

I am going to pass on the W rated race tire..I will leave that tire for
Troy..:)

Yep...

They are good, but they still have that Michie street tyre trait of
letting go without warning.

I could get to within about 5 seconds of the lap record on Powers (its
a shortish track)...

Slapped some new Power Races on, med/soft dual compounds each end and
knocked a second off that right away...front felt much more stable
especially and the Race's will  tell you when they are about to go

RACE TIRES RULE!

And for a reason.

I used the Pilot Powers today on the track, and after some slippery moments
(they only had 60 miles of street-scrub-in on them), and they got hot, they
stuck like glue(for my skill level). I like them a lot since I do ride the
RC51 on the street a lot. Although Troy is hard with his delivery style, he
is correct. :)

You and Saddle, 60 miles to street scrub them in during which you have
slippery moments? I wonder why in the hell race tires don't do this
particular little stunt?

Yeah, Me & Saddle!!! You have more track-savvy then we do, be we got you
beat on wisdom!! Heh, heh..

BTW,  what would race tires have done...Zero scrub in time???

I think what Troy is trying to say is all you need on new tires is a few
laps to get them all nice and sticky.

My past two sets of brand new tires have been 2 laps then go for it.

Hey, you found those Powers before I did, and you ain't the only ones saying
good things about them.

> BTW,  what would race tires have done...Zero scrub in time???

Turn 1, Road Atlanta on a damp track at full speed is my most interesting
example. Zero scrub in prior to the first lap. No squirm, no wiggle, those
were older Metzlers even. Nowadays, its one or one and a half laps and its
off to the games.....on race tires. Street tires, to date I can get those to
squirm anytime. I'll try the Powers.

Ha, ha, Troy, you don't give me any slack do ya!! :). I am please to tell
you that I agree with you 10000%. Now, how about that..

Also, I would like to report, I am getting faster, much faster! :)  The
point of the matter is, the bike I am using is not a DEDICATED STREET BIKE!!

You got that!! Sure, I take the RC to the track over the Gixxer, but I still
ride the RC a lot on the street. I got 42,000 miles on the RC51.. Like I
said before, I am working on getting some better rubber, in a little while
my skill level will demand that. And by that time I will have a dedicated
street bike whereas, I can put high price sticky rubber on it, and don't
even think about putting it on the street..

The track day went nice, real good. I was not only passing in the straights
I was passing on the outside of turns. Confidence level is high, but not
cocky. Still got a long ways to go..

Don't give up on me.. :)

appears you attach some significance to this...and I'm not sure why.

I haven't. Just don't crash on street tires anymore and expect much more
than a "we told you so" if it happens. Its pretty standard fair around here
over the past 2 summers.

Dam Troy, I am getting senile fast..:) I made a big typo in this sentence:
>> Also, I would like to report, I am getting faster, much faster! :)  The
>> point of the matter is, the bike I am using is not a DEDICATED STREET
>> BIKE!!
I meant to say "the bike I am using is NOT A DEDICATED TRACK BIKE"

I am trying to staying away from crashing just as much as any
track-addicted-nut out there. I see spots where I think I can go faster, but
hold back because I know my equipment is not up to par.. You see, I got a
little something going on up there.. The season is coming to an end, and
everybody is getting the chit together for next year. I will never give up
street riding, but come next year,  you might be proud of the old man. All of
the points you have been trying to drill in my head, most likely I will them
covered, moving much better and having more fun.. :)

Coleman, I want to be just like you when I grow up.

Watch the knee man, know when to call it quits for the day so you
don't really screw it up.  I hope to see you out there next year
on the track.  I need to get a few more things squared away with
the house, and then should be able to start hitting the track on
a regular basis.  I need to decide if I should buy another bike
for commuting, and leave the RC51 just for the track, or buy another
set of wheels for the RC51 so I can keep track tires on the spare,
and street tires on the OEM rims.

Kurt, I ain't never growing up, sheesh, too much fun feeling young!! :)

At the track today, one of the control riders had RC51 fully prepared for
the track. All well and good, but I still ride my RC on the street. Another
set of rims would make my job a lot easier. I am also thinking about not
another bikes, but bikes! :).. Yeah, the old man can't play the waiting
game.. :).. I got the idea, just an idea now, and springing for two new
Hondas coming this Feb 2006.. The 1000rr, and the 600rr.. The 600 will be my
trackie, and the 1000rr will be my street/poser bike! :).. The two I got now
are keepers. 50k on the gix, and 42k on the RC.. Nobody, upon nobody would
want them. So, they stay with me. The two new bikes are just speculation
right now, but I am zeroing in on making it happen. :)
