The few people that can tolerate being around me in person know that I take
really good care of my bikes. And thus, when I sell one, it is in superb
shape. This means that the bike will likely be around for a long time, and
I will have some continued contact with it.
I try not to get too attached to my "mechanical girlfriends," but there are
a few that I still long for. Some are clearly dead by now -- my RD350 and
GS550. Some live nearby, like my two former Triumphs. Their current owners
sometimes send me pictures such as this one that I received yesterday:
http://www.malcontent.info/RID/RID-II---06.jpg.
My Triumph motorcycles have been by far the best bikes I've ever owned.
There have been others that stand out for different reasons. There are bikes
I wish I still had -- the RD350, and the Thunderbird 900 -- and some that
I've never looked back on, such as the KZ400 or the Vulcan 1500. The latter
two bikes were decent rides, but there was nothing special about them. I
suspect I will feel the same about the SV650 despite it being a great bike.
In ten years I won't be saying, "Boy, I sure wish I had kept that SV..."
Heck, I'd trade it for my former Thunderbird if the opportunity presented
itself.
So, how many of you keep in contact with your mechanical girlfriends? Do
you find yourself -- six sheets to the wind -- making midnight phone calls
inquiring about how your [insert bike] is doing these days, and professing
with slurred speech that you wish you were still together?

No. My mechanical girlfriends (like most of the fleshy ones) are
ridden hard until I dump them.

I don't know where they are, but I wish I had my 1997 900SS. I don't
want any of my old girlfriends back.

I keep track of my 900SS and 907ie, both sold to friends. I have no
idea what happened to my HD Heritage or Can-o-tuna.

(The following may or may not be tongue-in-cheek):
50cc Puch moped: last seen ridden by man named Otis in the 9th Ward of
New Orleans, c. August 27, 2005.
125 Honda Aero scooter: currently ferrying Vietnamese prostitutes in Ho
Chi Minh City.
Kawi GPZ 550: Still on consignment at Anderson Motors in Bloomfield
Hills, Michigan. (On showroom floor 18 years so far.)
Suzuki GS 750E: painted candy-purple, "Little Poison" stenciled
onto gas tank. Chopped-out and lowered, 230-series rear tire
shoe-horned onto swingarm.
Yamaha FJ1100: last seen running on 3-cylinders with low compression
and smoked regulator, new owner said was to be turned into a drag-bike
c. 1994. Current location unknown.
Ducati 851: follow the trail of blown regulators and rusty bolts to
current owner, ask him or her. Might have been forcibly repatriated to
Bologna.
Ninja 600R (2x): one vomited engine internals all over turns 8/8A of
Sears Point c. 4/97, other never ran under its own power under my
ownership. Last seen in a (large) bin of parts, sold to some chump for
$200 cash.
Gixxer 750: Jason Hegel, where arrrrrrre youuuuuuuu...?
Triumph Tiger: Likely left on a trail somewhere, backwoods of WA State.
Fish around the nearest deep mudhole, you may find it.
Aprilia Mille: current owner stopped hanging around w/company crowd.
Mildly curious what became of him and the bike; wouldn't want to
speculate too much.
Good riddance to bad rubbish, the lot. I don't get emotionally
attached to any motorcycle: there's always something better/more
interesting out there.

I see 400 lbs of rubbish moving into my garage the minute your wife
catches wise to the whole thing...

Funny timing for this post, as I just sold the SV650. I watched the buyer
drive away with it on a trailer as if I were watching my kid leave for his
first year of college. I was sad, my wife was sad, I think even my cat was
sad. I'm over it now, but it sure is funny, the relationships we develop
with machines...

As opposed to our reaction as the last of 3 MG Midgets we owned left on
the back of the buyer's trailer. We stood in the middle of the street
and sang "Ding, Dong the Witch is Dead" from the Wizard of OZ.

I get to ride my ex-851 from time to time, although she moved to LA a couple
of years back. Funny, I put about 45K on that bike in the 3 years I had it
(89-91)and last time I got aboard ( in 2004 or so) it still only had 51K and
change. Sorta sad really. I have often though I should try to buy it back
and mile the hell out of it!
My long ago owned '67 TR6 is still around San Francisco, sporting a very
nice restoration and a very stylish owner, complete with Davida helmet,
Silvercross goggles and knee high riding boots. Mod-O-Rama!!!
My Laverda 750SFC, "La Electronica" almost came home a few years back, too.
The current owner did a title search, contacted me and was wondering if I
still had the dam spanner wrench that came with it. While talking he
indicated he might like to sell it, but when he suggested the price, I
almost had a sh.t hemmorage. Four times what I had sold it for in 1983!!!
Bugger.
Any that I would definitely want back?
You betcha....that dam SFC!!! Most frightening thing ever to sport two
wheels if you ask me.
Especially that gawdawful paint job, sort of like batman orange.
