A "Heavenly Save" (long)

A "Heavenly Save", that is the only explanation I can come up with for not
crashing yesterday 8/21/06 at Summit Point Main. About 35% of my rear wheel
was shattered, gone, blown out, tire off the rim, front wheel, two big
dents, but no blowout.

In the last session of the trackday before the races, I am doing about 100
mph, going through turn 7,8, approaching turn 9. I got a fast leader, which
I am able to stick with until 7,8, & 9.. I go a little wide in 7 or 8, and
hit the rumble strips. My mind tells me nothing to worry about, I roll over
rumble strips in 3, and 10, so my attention is down on the almighty turn 10,
where I expect to pick up ground on my leader.

When I come across the rumble strip at about 100+ all of a sudden I get a
big bang/jolt, as if I hit a pot hole(which I did), I come out of the seat
from the jolt, I am still on throttle, the clip ons do a quick right left,
then the steering damper kicks in. However, I am still in trouble. I don't
dare chop the throttle, I don't dare take my hands on the bars to signal, I
am in trouble and trying to get off the track. Don't want to get azzpacked
or go down.

Still with the speed on, I ease off the throttle ever so gently. The bike
gets more unruly, my mind has almost assured me that I am going to meet the
ground, I eased off some more, the rear want to really go now, finally, I am
close to the grass, and I have scrubbed off speed. Now I made it to the
grass, sill moving, I know brakes are a no-no, I pull in the clutch, and
just let the bike roll and come to a stop. I am still not believing I didn't
go down. I take a quick look at the rear wheel, and it is on the grass, tire
off the rim, and 35% of my rear wheel gone.

No matter that I just thrashed my wheels, I am trying to figure out why I
didn't go down at that speed with that much damage done to my wheel!!!

The crew comes over, and everybody shakes their head at the amount of damage
on my rear wheel, and I was still upright. The only explanation I could give
anybody was that since my last crash here on the 4th of July at turn 10, I
have been to church every Sunday. I am not a deeply religious person, and I
don't push this line either. But, something, somebody, and way out of the
normal kept me from crashing yesterday. Right now, I got two smashed up
wheels and tires, they will be replaced as soon as possible.

BTW, there is a pothole in the rumble strip in turn 7 or 8, on the left hand
side at Summit Point Main.

Just wanted to share this , and not trying to persuade or push anybody to
believe that there is a supreme being or not. Just giving my view/opinon of
what happened.

BTW, they are overnighting me a set of white Carrozerria wheels from CA..
Should be up and running and back on the track in a couple days.. The 26th I
am on Summit Point Shannadoah with CCS..

Glad you are still in one piece Coleman. Don't worry though, odds are you'll
have plenty more opportunities to smash up that nice bike. Glad you got out
of this one okay. Be careful out there.

Troy, I am very timid, very!! On the scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the
most timid, I am a good 25!! :)  With that said, I have concluded that
"crashing" is part of the territory in this game. No way around it. You show
me a fast rider, they got crashes under their belt.

Believe me, I never want to crash, but knowing full well that it comes with
the game, I accept it.. It is the same way when I am in love with a
beautiful woman.. The same amount of excitment has a flip side, and it is
just as intense.  :)

So, Coleman is going to be on the lookout for that beater that should have
been my first one.. If I can land a used 05 or 06 CBR600rr, going to fix it
up for my spare.. Be coming to the tracks with two bikes with the same
number..Sheesh, the profile factor will go through the roof!! :)

Jebus!
How did that wheel come apart like that?
I'd be interested in knowing if there was some kind of inherent flaw.

It has to by some type of flaw.  Wheels tend to dent, not disintegrate.

Must be. I once hit an 8" rock curb head-on at circa 60MPH. It blew out both
tires and bent both my wheels like paper, but they never chipped or came
apart. (Stock Honda VFR800 wheels.)

Going to take them to the dealer, and tell him to take pictures and give to
the Honda rep. .I will tell them I hit a pothole at 100mph, and if they ask,
I will tell them I was doing a trackday. The worst they can say is no.. 80%
of the people have seen this wheel has said the same thing, there was
something defective in the wheel.. Could have come from the powder coating
process too..

After a two year hiatus, I find myself returning to
alt.motorcycle.sportbike....glad to see a few familiar handles still around.

Coleman, in my humble opinion, you didn't fall because you managed to keep
your head; managed to stay away from panic braking and let the engine slow
you up! Well done on not wrecking that beaut. There HAS to be a flaw in the
machining or something, perhaps as you suggested the powder process for the
wheels to break up like that.

How deep and big does a pothole need to be to destroy a rim? If the hole was
big enough to cause any serious damage, I suggest that the whole rim should
have disintegrated and not just apiece of the side-wall...My 02c....ZAR of
course!

'something, somebody' tried to kill you, not save you!

Maybe you just dodged 'your time is up' call?

Nah, I did that way back in 1979, when I was young and stupid. Highsided at
143 mph, with no gear, and came out only with road rash, and not the deep
stuff either.. So, I you call it dodging, I have been dodging a long time.

And we ALL know we are going to leave this muther at one time or another.
So, when my time is up, whenever it comes, they will bury me with a locked
grin, cause I had big fun.. :) :) :)

That does take a bit of luck if you ask me. Particularly considering at
the speed you were at.
I have had a flat at high speed before (Sear's Point between turn 9-10)
and just rolled to a stop without incident.
I also ran over a box spring up in Nevada on 395 at a very high rate of
speed (not telling anyone how fast)and just stayed on the gas without
any drama at all.
But looking at those wheels I have to wonder if you'll want another set
like those.:)
Stay in the saddle, and don't forget to go to church!

I am taking your advice, and not getting stock wheels. My aftermarket
wheels arrived yesterday.

And I will be attending church from here on out..

Glad you're fine, pretty amazing stuff.
