Ducati Prices - Multistrada opinions

I'll just toss this out into the wind:

I have been entertaining the idea of a new / different bike, mostly driven
by my recent forays onto dirt roads and desire for some hardcases.

I also want something with more panache, thus enter the Ducati Mulitstrada
620 Dark.

I went to the Ducati WEB site and they have an MSRP of $7995. My local
Ducati dealership has one listed for $8495. Further research found one in
Dallas for the same list price. Ebay yielded one hit in Monterey CA with a
current bid of $500 with 9 days to go (2006 model with 500 miles).

My 2001 F4i has a Kelley Blue Book trade in value of $3455.

Should I expect to pay above Ducati's MSRP and should I expect to get more
or less than trade in value on the F4i? I've never bought a brand new
motorcycle.

Oh, and I want the $900 Ducati hard cases.

Have you checked out Corse superbikes in Saukville Wisconsin? My buddy
just came all the way from Corbin Kentucky to buy a 749 from Corse. He
said nobody could touch their price.

Before you think Ducati, think maintenance. I have an '04 Multistrada
1000DS, I like the bike--a lot-but it is a maintenance hog compared to it
Japanese counterpart (RC51, V-strom). Where are you going to take it, how
far those 6,000 mile services. Speaking of service, think $$$$$$$$. I also
own a BMW K1200LTE, I used to think the Beemer was expensive. Hell, it is
not in the same league with Duc for service charges.

It's 7500 miles now.  Also, the world will not fall apart if you go a
little past that.

> Speaking of service, think $$$$$$$$.

That would depend on your dealer, now, wouldn't it..  $600 for a
service (belts, valves, carb/TB sync) is average. Much more than that &
you're being taken for a ride. It's also not rocket science to do this
yourself, but I could see having the services done by the dealer while
its under warranty. By then you should be ready to do it yourself..

Also, after the first service or two, each valve should not actually
-need- to be adjusted, only checked for clearance. Again, make sure
you're not getting screwed. Lots of dealers will pull the 'Ooooh, scary
European machines!' wives tale.

Can't help you on the negotiations bit, I got my 99 Monster used.  All
I could suggest is wait for winter, when the dealers are hungrier, if
you go that route.

I go a lot past that. I have the valves checked every 12k miles when
the belts get changed, so far so good. Also, the single cam on the
aircooled models makes the job a lot easier than on the 4 valve heads.
Plenty of good books and videos available for the do it yourselfer.

Buying new at the end of the season, if they have one sitting around it
should be easy to get for a discount.  Personally I would offer $7000
without a setup fee and see what they say.  They'll probably say MSRP
without the setup charge.  Then you can bargain combinations of the
bags and first service / 1st valve check too.  Everything's negotiable.

And for your F4i, if you want to unload it quick you should be able to
get $4500 off Craigslist in a heartbeat.  Most people are asking $5k or
$5500 for them.

Good luck!
Greg.

Couple more things.  Compare apples to apples. $7995 is MSRP on a MS
620 -Dark-, which is a slightly de-contented version (typically, matte
black paint and a single front disc, though these are not hard & fast
rules)  $8495 is MSRP on a standard MS620.

You can be fairly certain, though, that if it came from the factory
with glossy paint, it's not a Dark. The Ebay one appears to be a
'standard'.

I'm assuming that you looked at the VStrom 650/1000, too?  Not that I'd
try to dissuade you from the Multistrada...they're great bikes.

Or, wait a bit and see if they bring the 695 over here.

So, all the hub-bub against people telling you the sportbike on dirt
roads wasn't a good idea wasn't really needed, I guess.

Cycle world reviewed this bike with Suzuki 650 last month in their 2x2
issue. The bottom line was that the Susuki 650 was a better bike
overall. The article might be a good read for you.

Try not to trade it in. Selling it outright is a better option.

I would shop around. The year is getting a little long in some areas of
the country and dealers might be wanting to unload harder to sell
bikes. The MSRP should be a good starting point for negotiations. Get
them to quote you hard figures for the service intervals through 10-15k
miles. That will give you a good idea of what to expect. Make a note of
their hourly shop rate.

> Oh, and I want the $900 Ducati hard cases.

Think about Givi cases too (sometimes they were OEM cases for other
Italian bikes). Check them for this bike which might save a buttload of
cash.
