alf - 18 Mar 2007 03:18 GMT Hi,
It is a big day today. My wife asked me to find a bike for her. Will sign up her for MNFC first, but in meantime I need to start a research. What would you recommend for 4'11" tall women (she like sports, swims very well etc).
The only requirement she gave me it can not be a chopper.

Me, considering I went through this same event a long time ago, I'd find myself a 20 year old KZ440, GS400, CR250 Kawasaki, and let her learn on that before considering a REAL machine.

A typical rider will probably get somewhere in the 50-60 MPG range, but I've seen figures ranging anywhere from the mid 40s to the high 60s reported on the Ninja 250 board.
One guy claimed to be averaging 73 MPG, but nobody else believed him.

At 70MPG level +-5MPG is withing error margin so it really does not matter whether it is 65 or 70. The same 5MPG makes huge difference for trucks getting 15MPG.

The answer to the inevitable question is: Yes, of course she will outgrow it in a few months, but so what? The idea is to be unintimidated while she's learning so that she can learn well.

Bob Rowlands - 19 Mar 2007 06:44 GMT I wouldn't do it! Had a girlfriend that wanted to start MC riding. Bought her a 500cc starter bike, took MC course and proceeded to scare the hell out of me. Not only was I board stiff putting along on my 1000cc BMW while she was scared stiff at every turn. Looking in the rear view mirrior after every turn and hopping she made it. Granted her reflexes wern't too good, but still remember how long it took you to become proficent.

So it is 50% more, not 100% and the Duc is 800cc vs 650cc. Hmmm.
Come on Troy, we all know you are big on facts. Besides, one has soul the other is an appliance. :)
Oh wait, he wants a bike for the wife, buy an appliance. Wait again, if bikes are shoes then I think the wife would rather have the Italian shoes rather than the Nikes.

I think the soul comes from all the welds in a Trellis frame and that outdated Desmo valve train (trying to sound like a former poster that used to swear that triples are the "one true engine").
You know, this whole "soul" vs. "appliance" thing is soooo much more fun to debate than the tired old discussions about flat carbs, idle jets, vibration, rotating mass and H-D debates.
It is like aurging about music. Did you know that CCR was a hippie protest band, with songs like Fortunate Son and Who'll Stop the Rain?
What do I know about soul. I'm white, I can't dance, I can't hold a rythm and all I have ever really ridden are Hondas?

We just dance differently, to a different beat that only we can hear.
Riding Honda's is more of a male/female thing than black/white.....girls ride Honda's. :)

Yes! Motorcycles with SOULS....what are they, who makes them, why do they have it and another one made by someone else to a higher level of quality DOESN'T have it?

I started on a Yamaha, worked my way through a nice brace or three of Kawasaki's, switched over to Honda's during the 90's and early 2000's, and of late have been a Zookie man.
I have been examining Ducati's, KTM's, ( test rode a Buell) and the occasional Triumph as of late. Perhaps it is time to spend more money than most bikes are really worth and go searching for this "soul" stuff while hoping that Italian or American reliability ( or lack thereof ) doesn't piss me off first.

Why take a chance? Stick with the tried and true Japanese machines. You've been happy with them for what, twenty plus years? It's not like they're getting worse; they're getting better every year. I can't think of a single reason for you to try anything else!

Of course YOU can't think of a reason, but I am a SCIENTIST!! I am required to test the bounds of conventional thinking on a regular basis! Why not in my personal life with motorcycles as well?

You "test the bounds" buying an appliance? :) of "convential thinking", buying a safe cheap motorcycle.
You are a hoot!
Admit it, you are either poor or cheap. Me? I am poor and I am cheap. That's why I ride a 6 year old Honda. But I still understand soul.
BTW, the S90 has soul. Goddam the Honda 90 has soul. The Lifan Chinese knock off does not.

I have never bought a "cheap" motorcycle in my life, but I definitely keep my eye open for inexpensive examples of fine bikes. I'm a practical guy, spending $6G's when for $3G's I can get the same thing strikes me as completely reasonable, particularly when the extra qualities can only be described as "soul" and don't show up in fun to ride, lighter weight, more power, better handling, or other things which I can tell after riding it.

Two of my mates have sold their RSV Mille R's and bought Tuono's. The high handlebars were the selling point. A pity they left the footpegs in the 'racer crouch' position.
Instead of going for the high bars ($1800NZ for the 'bolt on' kit) I'm getting some custom footpeg mounts made up. I don't mind the clip-ons, but I'd like a bit more legroom.

It's a much better value than an SV650, and it has soul.
The SV650 was born with soul, but sold its soul to the devil so that it could appear 60-strong on lightweight club race grids nationwide.
Now the SV650 is merely an empty husk of a motorcycle, waiting to be parted out to other club racers.
A Hyosung Comet 650 has more soul.

> The SV650 was born with soul, but sold its soul to the devil so that > it could appear 60-strong on lightweight club race grids nationwide. ?? The sv650 was a born a beginner bike, a beginner bike which happened to be so good that non beginners enjoy it, and as you mentioned race it, and some of us tour on it, and others trackbike it, and I can understand why its pissed the italian-o-philes off in its ability to offer "soul" except at a lower price.

No, Ducatis are tearing the damn things to shreds in club races all over the country. When the SV650 came out, it pissed off FZR400, EX500, and Hawk 650GT club racers because it quickly became dominant in a way not seen since the Yamaha RD350/RD400/RZ350 days. It has NOTHING to do with Italophiles. Silly Troy.

Oh...I've seen the entire "soul" thing before, but you are right, to date I most definitely haven't "gotten it". I buy motorcycles to ride mostly, not to clean, not to pose for my friends or try and collect some free snobbery among those who are limited to japanese motorcycles because of price ( versus guys like me who are more value conscious and just don't get the appeal ), maybe if I test ride one ( I do like the Multistrada ) I will understand better.
