...none of the magazines, print or on-line, have done a comparison
test of the Ducati S4Rs Monster vs the KTM Superduke 990?   Doesn't it
seem like the most likely marketplace comparison; price, weight,
power, displacement, engine layout, ergos, suspension, brakes are ALL
similar.   I've seen the Super Duke compared to the Aprilia Tuono, the
Triumph Speed Triple, and the BMW R1200R (for Ged's sake!), but not
the Ducati.

Theories?

The link below and the quotes are not exactly what you are looking for
but they are all I've found.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml=/motoring/2005/01/08/mfduke08.xml

"it doesn't inspire as much confidence in the front end as a Ducati
Monster S4R, for example"

"The Super Duke 990 is not as powerful as an Aprilia Tuono nor as
secure-handling as a top-spec Monster, but overall it's no less a
bike, bringing a distinct and welcome character to an already rich and
exciting category. Not bad for a first attempt"

I'm sitting here looking at Sept/2007 SportRider with Tuono R, Ducati S4R,
SuperDuke, Brutale and FZ1.

Not all bad?

Huh.  I subscribe to that rag.  Wonder why I haven't gotten it?

I was scoping out the S4Rs or whatever it is with all the Ohlins/Brembo
goodies at the shop on Saturday, I have become enthralled with its spec
sheet. It really is a smaller bike, physical dimension wise. Its still
uglier than snot of course, there was some Foggy replica there as well, used
I think, sitting beside it, fancied up a little nicer. The Tuono R is still
the best looking of the comfy sporty vtwins, and the KTM is the plainest. No
orange ones though, they do look a littler nicer than the straight black.

I was hoping there was a Kawasaki Versys around, they must not be out till
maybe this winter? The new Concours isn't as ugly as its pictures would lead
someone to believe, but all of those big sport tourers are just huge bikes.

Yeah, but it gives you a reason to actually move around a little.  I
ride my friends Ninja 650 and I find I don't even need to apply force
to the handlebars...the mere movement of your eye is enough to make it
change direction.

With the Concours, you do get the added feature of being able to grill
on it when you get to your destination too.

Sounds like my 650. The 1100 steers more like a truck.

I personally don't care for the looks of the Tuono or the KTM at
all.   I don't think the Monster is particularly ugly, but I've always
thought that the gas tank was too large and humpbacked, and the rear
fender treatment was bad from day 1.   By the time you hang the
radiator and oil cooler and hoses on the liquid cooled versions of the
Monster, it looks cluttered and complicated, which is the opposite of
the intent of the bike.

I actually find the air-cooled 2-valve versions to be more attractive,
but I don't like those engines in my streetbikes.

So, to improve the looks (and performance) of my S4Rs, I had the
carbon fiber front fender and sidecovers painted, added a Ducati
Performance smoked windshield, Napolean Baren bar-end mirrors, swapped
on a Ducati Monster 695 (lower) saddle, removed the passenger
footrests and footrest brackets,  got rid of the "udder" exhaust
collector via installation of a Termignoni 50mm full exhaust system,
Ducati Performance ECU and modified airbox, added a DP painted rear
fender (aka "beertray"),  and DP  carbon fiber rear mudguard, bar
risers to raise the handlebars, and removed the evaporative emissions
canister, and added an Ohlins side-mount steering damper.

Here's how it looks now:

I like it a lot better than a stock S4Rs, but it is still not the
prettiest bike I've ever owned, not by a long shot!

(It's definitely the most fun to ride bike that I've ever owned,
though!)

I like the pearl white ones. Yours looks better than most with the white
stripe though. And it could look even worse, some of the black ones were
pretty hideous.

It has a decent spec sheet. But the cost for it is pretty high...I get on
expensive bikes and I ride slower.

BTW, I did go and buy the September issue of Sport Rider.  They didn't
have it on the shelf, but the girl stocking the shelves went and found
it in her stack of magazines to be shelved. (Good girl!)

The version they test in the comparison is the new S4R, which has the
engine out of the S4Rs, but doesn't have the Ohlins suspension or the
carbon fiber parts that litter the S4Rs.  Remember, the 1098 costs
$15,000 and the 1098S costs $20,000, so you pay $5,000 for the
Ohlins.   The S4R costs $12,500 and the S4Rs costs $15,000, so you pay
$2,500 for the Ohlins.   If you buy the S4Rs for the same price as the
base 1098, you get the upgraded suspension of the 1098S.  Also, used
S4Rs's are going for right around $13k, so you can get one that has
had the 600 mile service performed and maybe even had some Termignoni
slip-ons installed,  for the price of a new plain-jane S4R.

Anyway, the S4R they test is putting out 109 hp, which is the lowest
rear wheel dyno output I've ever seen for a 998 Testastretta engine,
bar none.  And yet, it's still seven more hp than they got out of the
Duke 990's engine.

I will have to get my S4Rs dynoed soon, to see what it is making with
the full Termi 50mm system and the DP ECU and modified airbox.

I urge you to get a ride on an S4Rs ... and I've ridden a HyperMotard
1100S recently... so if you can, ride them back to back.   As nice as
the HyperMotard is, it is no competition at all for the S4Rs.  Weighs
almost exactly the same, but with 30 less hp, and the engine is
nowhere near as smooth or revvy as the 4v motor in the S4Rs.

If you are coming east on business, let me know, and we can arrange an
EXTENDED test ride!

Yeah, I thought yours was supposed to make more. I knew the Duke only made
slightly more than 100, but I was imaging waht yours might be like with 140,
thought it would be a riot. When I saw that number I was a bit surprised,
100HP is just not that much. My 750 was like 120 and I thought that was a
bit meager, Shawns Gixxer1000 had power EVERYWHERE but it had other issues.

I work daily at 12300 Sunrise Valley Dr.  Look it up....

I don't recall exactly which set of buildings that is, but I could probably
throw a stone from my office building and hit yours.

Next time I'm in Reston I'll let you know. Be warned though, the last time I
was in that building was Sept 11, 2001.

It was a bad day all round. Haven't been back.

Yeah, and the security officers armed with shotguns and automatic
rifles at my building since that date would NOT appreciate the stone
throwing!!!

I don't know if security has been upgraded at the Reston office since then,
there didn't use to be more than guys with guns in the lobby at the metal
detectors. The entrance to the parking lot itself might be all securitied up
by now.

The place out here in Denver was considering becoming a local park until
Timothy McIdiot did his thing, then they clamped down and changed their
minds, and after 9-11 they started searching cars at the gates, people
entering the buildings, the whole enchilada.

Yep.  We've got bomb sniffing dogs, car catchers, boulders, berms,
flak jackets, snipers, armored vehicles, etc.   Welcome to the war on
terror.

My favorite are the places guarded by heavily armed 18 year olds and
surrounded by kill zones where, according to the signs at least, they
can shoot first just for setting foot in the zone, and ask questions later.
Of course, they've been doing that long before 9/11.
