Raced 4 races, 2 regionals and 2 nationals.  Grids were light, some were
very light.  I pretty much sucked, especially in the HWT race.  Maybe
racing SV1ks, Aprilias, Duc 999s, RC51s, etc. on a SV650 at RA wasn't
such a good idea.  If I had been on last years pace I would have done
better, but I was 2 seconds off this year and could not find it.  Still
had a good time.  That is all.

Good to hear you had fun.
Bummer you couldn't find it.
It's still better than working that weekend!

Dunno, it certainly starts to feel like work, especially when the guys
you have been competitive with all year suddenly drop 3 seconds like a
bad habit while you go in the other direction.

Might just be the track. I always found that I regularly did well at some
tracks and not so well at others.

I was two seconds faster on the same track last year.

I've lost my fast...has anyone seen it?

I'll find out in March if I've lost mine.   A bit nervous about it,
but also excited....

Glad to hear you had no incidents!

Hmmm. Could just be the yips.

I was trying out a Shelby 350 Mustang at Willow Springs one day, and I
couldn't make the thing go anywhere *near* as fast as it should have gone.
(In fact, I was about two seconds slow.) In response I tightened up and
overcooked it into turn 3, cutting up two brand-new tires on the rocks when
I ran off the track.

I had a chance to cool down and relax while we installed some new tires, and
during that hiatus a driver new to Willow Springs came over to our pits and
asked me if I'd show him the lines around the track. So we both climbed into
the Mustang and I took him around for about five laps, largely driving with
one hand, looking at him a lot, and pointing things out at the top of my
lungs as we went past them.

When I came back into the pits, the crewchief handed me the stopwatch and
just walked away. My fugitive two seconds had come back, and had brought
another half-second along with them when they returned.

From this I learned that getting upset and pushing harder just compounds
your problems and slows you even further. The trick is to stay relaxed and
yet concentrate at the same time. It's a mind-set that I never learned to
call up on demand, but could recognize whenever it occurred.

This may explain why I quit racing after a couple of years.

35+HP more and only 50 extra pounds on the liter twins! Sounds normal
unless you're a real pro rider. Ain't RA a big fast track too? At
least you didn't crash and has some fun:)

Cool. If any of you racers (track day weenies even, hehe)  make it to Miller
next year, you'd better ping me.

You'd be more than welcome to crash (sleep!) at my place and I'll help
anyway I can.  Even if it means just cheering at the track.

success!

Aw c'mon, we know you were just sandbagging so you wouldn't have to race
expert next year ;-)

Some of my buds already claim what I do in the novice ranks ain't racing.  I'd be target practice for the experts.

Or maybe I've been sandbagging all year?  Yeah, that's why I keep
finishing in the lower third of the pack.  ;-)

Why do you race?  I mean if you already enjoy track days, why also race?

Thrill of competition (yes, even among the backmarkers we have some good
racing), practically non-existent squidliness, much better mix of
machinery on track, much better atmosphere in the paddock, and it's fun.
I WILL get faster.  I usually do, this was an aberration.

All good reasons.

I hope you didn't think I was dissing your skills.  I'm sure racing is a LOT
harder than most folks realize.

Nah, I suck and freely admit it.  1:47 at Road Atlanta is creeping, and
my previous best of 1:45 ain't much better.

But I didn't come in last...

That doesn't seem so slow considering it's a fast track, you're on an SV650,
and Mladin was running 1:21s in Sep (at least by my phone's stopwatch).

When your competitors who were turning 1:44-45 in July start turning
1:42s and slowly disappear from view it seems pretty dang slow.

The winning experts on SV650s were turning 1:34s.
