Jamin - 22 Oct 2007 19:54 GMT Sorry for the multiple posts, folks. There seems to be a significant lag time for some of my messages, longer than 24 hrs, which then prompts me to repost.

For instance, mine is currently deleting the random letter, word, or occasionally short sentence from my posts with no obvious pattern to the

You get what you pay for ;-) Seriously, what are you talking about? I haven't seen multiple replies or new posts from you. The last new thread I have is *Ping Joey*.

The last new thread I > have is *Ping Joey*. Well, yeah... free Usenet access is worth every penny! :) I use the Comcast servers when at home, and the TeraNews servers when I'm elsewhere. It's the latter ones that have seemed to be lagging at times.
The thread I noticed it on was "Confronting a squid". I posted a reply to someone else on 10/19 that didn't show up in my newsreader until today. I posted it Friday, looked for responses on Saturday, didn't see my original post or any responses so I reposted, then today I see both posts there, the oldest one dated Friday. Not a huge deal, just a little annoying.

What are the advantages to using the news server and what is its name. When I had a previous isp I downloaded from their news server using outlook express. I've heard there are better readers around. Any suggestions?
Thanks Bruce

I never much cared for web-based news browsing or posting. Part of the reason why is that using a standalone news reader makes it easier for me to use a fake email address to help avoid spambots. Also, at least in the past couple of years, I just thought that the user interface was kind of cumbersome.
As for news readers, I'm still using an Outlook Express variety. I've tried Thunderbird and don't find the user interface as intuitive (familiar). I've just not really been motivated to go find a better news reader when this one seems to work fine. A lot of people use the Agent news reader, but I haven't.

Google seems happy enough with my old deja news address. It hasn't been a real working address for a few years now. As for the interface, yeah, it seems every time they update it they make it worse.

Set things up so I can use Outlook Express. Thought it might be good to have an alternative the next time they improve google groups.

Google, using some random post number algorithm will prohibit you from posting for some random length of time (hours) if you exceed their secret number. This is an effort to prevent spammers from conducting their business on the newsgroups I suppose, but it would be more a lot more effective if they prevented any single post from being distributed to a large number of groups IMO.
Newsreaders also have spell checking and a far nicer interface for dealing with read/unread posts.
I used these guys for a while and when it worked it worked great, but they had a couple of instances where it didn't so I dumped them. They're probably fine now, but its too late as I'm used to the free, crappy Google interface.
