TroytheTroll - 06 Feb 2010 00:34 GMT So how would that old 2wd truck do in the kind of storm you are getting now? Sounds like you might get feet! Like....we got 2 or 3 of those in a row sometimes....the kids even missed a day of school!

Luckily, they want me at work, so they're putting me up ina hotel next door to the job site. 17 hours yesterday, 14 hours today, 12 scheduled (probably will be more like 14 or 15) tomorrow. Meanwhile, my truck is sitting idle, buried under the snow, while everyone else slides around and into each other!
Well, gotta get about 4 hours of sleep and head back to the site.....

Heard somewhere <cough, cough> that putting on winter tires turns that 2WD in a snow prince :-) who leave all subarus in the dust err snow flakes ...

Like....we got 2 or 3 of those in a row [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > 2WD in a snow prince :-) who leave all subarus in the dust err snow > flakes ... Yep; that's EXACTLY right. (Well, all Subarus that don't have dedicated winter tires, that's for damn sure.) (In fact, my son got stuck in his customer's Subaru Forester last night and had to have another customer in a jeep come and tow him out!)
If you'll recall, I just got this truck this past fall. Different size wheels and tires than my 1/2 ton truck. Snow tires I had didn't fit. Decided not to spend the money on another set of wheels and another set of tires. And look how well it worked out ...
I'm working and getting paid, my truck is sitting and not racking up miles or getting in an accident, and I cleared the snow offf it a half hour ago and moved it to a plowed parking spot, where I can get in it tomorrow at 6:30 pm and drive home in time to see the Super Bowl.
Life is good!
Now for dinner (courtesy of the client, like breakfast and lunch, then off to bed in my nice Marriott hotel room (courtesy of the client) and then back to work in the morning (in the client's 4wd pick-up, burning the client's gas).
Did I mention that life is good? ;-)

Damn, we really NEED that white stuff out west.

Denver is still ahead of the curve for winter snowfall, our October and November was pretty cool....still have that snow in the backyard. Getting maybe a foot today.
Our snowiest months are yet to come....maybe we'll get a snowpocalypse!

It'll be over in a month, it'll be getting warmer here, with occasional bursts of snow. I'm ready to start commuting via motorcycle again....
TroytheTroll - 07 Feb 2010 20:35 GMT >Did I mention that life is good? ;-) In such a situation someone might even forget that the rest of the country is still irritated over the last recession! And hyperinflation!

(In fact, my son got > stuck in his customer's Subaru Forester last night and had to have > another customer in a jeep come and tow him out!) I saw Jeep Cherokee stuck badly in the snow tool with all wheel spinning. My friends father was pulling a twice as big vehicle from the snow with his Justy. Perhaps the Jeep rider was better in the snow.
> If you'll recall, I just got this truck this past fall. Sory, but I did not it.

No, not $600 per hour, unfortunately.
However, I did order a set of snow tires for the truck yesterday. This is ridiculous.
TroytheTroll - 08 Feb 2010 14:58 GMT >However, I did order a set of snow tires for the truck yesterday. >This is ridiculous. Woke up this morning to the 2nd straight day of snow now. Not even a snow delay for the kids at school. Maybe if its still snowing through Wednesday...of course...any place else it would be a national emergency and the local weenies would have to call out the national guard....Tim of course would be towing out HummVee's and Bradley fighting vehicles with his Cheby, now that it has snow tires.

[quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > would be towing out HummVee's and Bradley fighting vehicles with his Cheby, > now that it has snow tires. Hope so. On top of the 31 inches we got over the weekend, they're now calling for 10-20 inches tomorrow and tomorrow night. In an area that averages 17 inches of snow per YEAR, it's difficult to deal with that on top of the 28 inches we got the week before Christmas. In fact, it now appears that with tomorrow's storm, we will set the all-time record for the Washington D.C. area for seasonal snowfall, with over five feet at Dulles airport, if the forecast is accurate.
I do hope my snow tires arrive tomorrow. I'm also planning to leave the tonneau cover on the bed open so that I at least have the weight of the snow over the rear wheels...
TroytheTroll - 09 Feb 2010 02:08 GMT > On top of the 31 inches we got over the weekend, they're now >calling for 10-20 inches tomorrow and tomorrow night. I saw that on the news this evening. Those kinds of snows are a BLAST...I used to love going out in them in the Yo, towing people out of drifts, dodging emergency vehicles, gods winter wonderland.
Of course...that happened like twice within 15 days in Ohio, and then for years each winter was cold drizzle. So I moved to a place where those kinds of snows can happen like every weekend for months ( winter of 06-07 ).

This global warming stuff is pretty bad a.s!
BryanUT - 09 Feb 2010 02:25 GMT > This global warming stuff is pretty bad a.s! Don't confuse weather with "global warming" / "climate change".
There are really 2 questions. Is the change an anthropogenic event ( that we may or may not be able to control) or is the change due to natural events (not unheard of or studied)?
We know we can alter the mico weather to an extent ( cloud seeding), I see no reason why our activities would cause macro changes.
Shut up and ride.
Oh and BTW, for the life of me I don't see why Tim is buying snow tires NOW. Hell the snow will be gone in short order. That's why I've never bought a snowblower. I can deal with a snowy driveway for a few weeks.
Tim - 09 Feb 2010 03:19 GMT > Oh and BTW, for the life of me I don't see why Tim is buying snow > tires NOW. Hell the snow will be gone in short order. My current contract has me driving 28 miles each way, instead of 5. My 2500HD 2WD is, without a doubt, the worst 4-wheeled vehicle I have ever driven in the snow. The snow from the weekend is packed down to 6-inches of ice on secondary streets; it's not going anywhere for awhile. They're predicting 10-20 inches of new snow tomorrow night and Wednesday. My current contract lists me as "essential personnel;" for the first time in my 33 year career; I am REQUIRED to be at work or there are financial penalties. We generally get our worst snowfalls in the mid-Atlantic region in January to mid-March.
Oh yeah.
I can use the the snow tires next year, too.
TroytheTroll - 09 Feb 2010 04:16 GMT >> This global warming stuff is pretty bad a.s! > > Don't confuse weather with "global warming" / "climate change". Oh...now Bryan....would I do THAT?
> We know we can alter the mico weather to an extent ( cloud seeding), I > see no reason why our activities would cause macro changes. > > Shut up and ride. There ya go!! Why worry about climate change ( in either direction, but right now is clobbering DC with snow! ) when there are motorcycles to ride, warm weather or cold!
> Oh and BTW, for the life of me I don't see why Tim is buying snow > tires NOW. Hell the snow will be gone in short order. That's why > I've never bought a snowblower. I still have beginning of October snow in the backyard, with another foot or so of new stuff on top of it.
Joey Tribiani - 09 Feb 2010 04:59 GMT >. Hell the snow will be gone in short order. That's why > I've never bought a snowblower. I can deal with a snowy driveway for > a few weeks. even with the relatively low amount of snow we have in my area (S.W Virginia, BlueRidge Mountains) I'm on my second snow blower... Of course my driveway connects to a state highway(55mph zone) in a blind curve... Traction when pulling out is very important, and life really does depend on it!...50-60FT of visibility from the driver's seat...fun fun!

Be efffing careful, dude. Folks are FLYING on the brief stretches of fully cleared highwaqy up here.
