Right MGP. Last week of August.
Champ is racing 2 classes.
Bonners and A N Other are heading over.

Any interest?
It would be last minute Hotel/B&B/Homestay, a last minute call to Ash for
the Scout Hut, or last resort.... Camping.
Ferry is £160-170 return

What dates are the actual races? And what's it like for getting a
decent hotel booking during this period?

Only Jude would quite like to go to the island again, as that's where
her family's from, and I've never been, so we might think about doing
a trip that combines some of the MGP period with a few days when the
roads and everything would all be open.

Seems like we could get there from Basel in about three hours, via
LCY, so it could be doable.

Any recommendations? I know less than SFA about the place - the
airport's at, or close to Douglas, I assume, but is that the hub of
everything else as well?

Yes, unless there's bad weather on the Friday, which will push racing
onto the Saturday.

Road closures are less of an issue during practice week, being closed
from 6pm to around 8:30 each evening.  The weekend betweeen practice
and race week is the bank holiday, tho I guess that makes little
difference to you overseas visitors.

I've only ever stayed with mates, so can't recommend anywhere.

In IoM terms, the airport isn't actually that close to Douglas, but
Douglas is the main hub, as you say.  I'll be staying in Ramsey, and
Andy Bonwick, Black Mike, etc will be up there or nearby.

I've heard good-ish things about the Grand Island Hotel in Ramsey

but otherwise it's probably worth contacting the tourist board.

To what gain? I suppose it'd work out slightly cheaper that way, but
it'd take a fair bit longer, I imagine. Anyway, I haven't run the idea

I usually check the Homestay ads on www.iomtt.com  and never been
disappointed yet, only booking a week or two before, then book with Seacat,
go on wednesday or thursday during practice week and come back on the monday
or tuesday after race week, night boats are cheaper and check for either
Liverpool or Heysham, there can be big savings there. There's lots of other
things going on at days between racing and at weekends. Most expensive
sailings are on Fri/Sat/Sundays.

Are you kidding?  A car on the ferry will be a good 200 quid return.

Much cheaper to fly to the Island and rent a car there.

Flights from London City start at...

<does a proper web search>

Actuallym it seems I could get the flights for a mere 35 quid each,
and we'd be able to get the Basel-LCY sector on air miles. Hmmm.

>Much cheaper to fly to the Island and rent a car there.

Indeed; although, as you possibly realise, cost is really not a major
factor in the decision. Most convenient and comfortable is what we'd
go for.

But I can't find a hotel with availability, except one in Port Erin
(http://www.porterinhotels.com/hotels/royal/main.shtml), which seems
to be miles away - if I'm going to convince Jude of this it has to be
somewhere nice, so I'm really not looking at cheapo B&Bs or guest
houses.

Homestay isn't a guest house or B&B AFAIK.
My understanding is someone's house or flat and they are away for the
duration. ICBW.

They may be perfectly nice, but as a persuasion technique "We can stay
in this five star hotel with excellent restaurants in house and it's
right in the heart of things" sounds a damn sight better than "we'll
be staying in somone's house about which we know nothing, but I'm sure
the bed-linen will be clean and there's probably/possibly restaurants
withing walking, or at least driveing distance, although we'll have to
get our own breakfasts and clean up after ourselves".

Don't you think?

The ones I've used have always been very comfortable with the owners present
who have not imposed themselves on us at all.

Quite understandable, She needs a holiday as well. My Mrs doesn't like bikes
at all but she also has ancestry on the Island so she does her own thing
which works out quite well. Persuasion can be awkward but once you've got
her there she'll love it.

Hang on a minute, I wasn't really thinking of bikes at the time, plenty of
time for those later. I can just see her taking the vows, like, I will love,
honour and polish his bike when it's in the kitchen.  :-)

Indeed.

That's where half the group stopped in 2002.  The hotel was basic, don't
expect anything special there.

Port Erin itself is quiet and as far as redeeming features go it has one
of the nicest beaches on the island, and an excelent pub that does a
good selection of real ales (unlike most pubs on the islans where you'll
get Okells, and like it.) as you say it's a fair drive away from where
most things happen.

I'm sh.t-scared about what's going to happen when the projects get

Simian kindly flogged me his gixer 750 SRAD road-legal track-bike, Pip
picked it up for me, Lozzo was let loose on it with about £500 to work
his magic, and Cane is kindly storing it for me as I've f.ck-all time
ATM.

Having mates utterly rocks.  Thanks to all of the above for being
smashing people.  I was going to keep it quiet, then turn up at a ride-
out incognito and kick some botty, but sadly I don't think I'll have a
minute free between now and the end of September.  Once the contract
finishes though I'm tempted by the idea of a South of France trip, maybe
into Spain - if anyone's up for that, email me.

It is going to go *exactly* like one would expect.

Leeds NHS Trust IT are a case in point. They don't know or want to know
anything about Medical Devices. I mean chaps, it's only a Hospital FFS, lets
concentrate on the PA desktops and the Directors laptops.

OTOH I haven't actually ridden it in anger yet, and it's got rearsets,

*Super*

ATM I can't decide if riding down would be good, or instead just do the
long ferry to northern Spain and take it from there.

If we sweet-talk Paul Carmichael he might let us shelter in his shed,

Excellent idea and the added cost will filter any UKRM pikeys out of the
equation

The long haul down through central France is a bind, unless motorail does
bikes.

TBH I prefer Italy to Spain though and if we stay with PC you just *know* he
is going to float naked in his pool flashing his periwinkle at us.

Northern France > Switzerland > Northern Italy > Italian Riviera

Only I'd do it through France, then head east to Italy ... if we were

Wouldn't much fancy that TBH - it's only the first third of northern

Because you've always been so nice to me, I just called the Nice branch of
the car hire firm Ada [1] (+33 4.93.85.84.04).  They say that you can have
a 10m3/12m3/23m3 van for three days, pick up in Nice, drop off anywhere
else in France, for a fixed fee of 1,200€.  That strikes me as outrageously
expensive, but then I'm a modest civil servant...

If someone else would be so kind as to repost this, so that Hog sees it..

Wrong way to do it: ride down, short-out ECU or other vital ignition
components down there, Auntie Carole recovery back for the bikes,
Easyjet for the humans.

The alternative is to bung a tow hitch onto the 911 and borrow a trailer
:)

But if you're going to do that we might as well ride down.  I quite like

That's very kind of you, thanks.

Assuming you meant me too :)

No worries. We're about seven hours from the channel, near enough
Basel for route planning.

>Assuming you meant me too :)

But of course. The offer's been outstanding for at least three years
anyway. And generally anyone passing by is welcome, provided
sufficient notice of course.

Cool.  Do-able in one hit easily then.

Well one likes to check periodically.

You've got a lock on your wine cellar, yes? :)

We shall pick up Des and Cab at Calais then.

As it happens, there is one. And a steel door too. Never normally
closed; my main security is having all the good stuff at the far end,
with the most accessible ones down in the 3-5 euro/bottle range. Are
you a fan of Rhone and Burgundy styles?

Not especially, but I *am* a fan of "other people's wine" styles :)

Steady on!  I have standards you know.

Seriously though, I don't tend to drink much these days.  As much as
anything, it makes my back hurty the next day, and I suspect the gixer
will be murder anyway in that respect.

If I had space to store it I'd have been quite tempted by WUN's Pan Euro
- it's one of the few Hondas I could see myself owning, if only because
it's such a spiffy tourer, and isn't too bad through the corners either;
you should see JP hustle one along.

You could chain it to the railings because nobody would nick it
