Anyone got a phone going cheap? Oh, and a car?

Yes, I've decided it's time to join in - I want a mobile phone. Cheap
and cheerful, PAYG, reliable, easy to use, with a camera (but it
doesn't have to be a good one). Anyone got a fairly decent one going
cheap?

And my friend wants a cheap, reliable little car - anyone outing one?

Orange's wibble often have cheap phobiles, but not usually with a
camera.  That said, my current phobile has a camera (not brilliant, but
it does have one) and cost around £40 from one of Orange's retail
outlets.  You'll probably find that other netjbexf have retail shops
TAAW, and of course wibbles.  They might also have similar offers.

Cheapest way to get a phone is to have a contract one on a rebate scheme.
Works for me. You'll need to be fairly disciplined to claim the rebates in
the time windows, though.

I'm currently on a £35 a month Vodafone tariff, which works out free for 12
months after the final rebate.

Come Novemeber I'll cancel this contract and sign up to another one.

I got the last one from http://www.coolnewmobile.co.uk/ but they seem to be
mainly 18 month contracts now.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/ has details of contract & PAYG deals e.g.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deal/40719/motorola-krzr-k1-lg-chocolate-nokia
The phones are unfashionable but perfectly serviceable, considering the
overall cost of bugger all.

Raises the question, 'when is a phone not a phone'?  It seems to do
everything, but I'll bet it's not cheap.  Neither, I suspect, does it
make toast.

No toast, no.

When you're shopping for a mobile phone you need to think about which
network you're on and then go from there.  Check out the various
mobile websites and use their postcode search boxes to check for
coverage around your home, place of work and other places where you go
a lot.

The prettiest and most perfect mobile phone in the world isn't going
to be much use if you've got coverage.

Some networks share or 'contract out' their coverage.  For example,
"3" used to roam on o2 but they now roam on Orange therefore if you
have good Orange coverage in your area then you'll have good 2G
coverage on 3.  If you're like me then you'll have 2G coverage but
'fringe' 3G coverage (3 uses its own network for 3G) which meant I had
utter sh.t reception on my old Nokia e61 because the phone would
always lean towards the fringe 3G coverage and keep losing signal all
the effing time and 3's custom phone firmware meant that I couldn't
disable 3G.

No it doesn't, although mine gets hot enough to keep a drink warm if
you're using lots of the functions.

Fine phone, apart from some software bugs that are being ironed out.

And it was a free upgrade 'cos I use it lots and the contract allowed
it.

Far cheaper is to buy a 2nd hand one. I bought Mum a Nokia 3330 a while
ago 'cos some git in the phone shop had sold her a tiny Motorola which
wasn't even slightly suitable for an 84 year old with MS and slow
fingers. £6 didn't seem too much for a nice big phone with big buttons.

£6? That's a lot.

Actually, my current phone, over 12 months and once the cashback checks
are in, will net me a profit of £50 (well about £45 once you factor in
the registered post costs for the rebate claims).

I will get a 100% line rental rebate, of £420 from the vendor. As I went
to their website via the Quidco portal, I will get a further £50
cashback, just from clicking on a link.

Well, I've had all but £164 of the line rental rebate so far this year. All
paid within the specified time frame.

I've done this with at least 4 different firms in recent years. I've always
received the rebate cheques. Even if one in five goes pear shaped, I've had
good value for money. I get the benefit of a £35 a month contract with no
net cost to me. Of course, I'm paying £35 a month to Vodafone in advance
and waiting for the rebates from the retailer. This no doubt aids their
cash flow and gives them a market share boost. This arrangement suits me.

fairy nuff, I suppose they bank on some people forgetting to claim, but
you do hear horror stories with this type of company, they need to keep
signing up more new customers, to pay the rebates back to the old
customers, until one day ...

No doubt. People forget as the time window is usually just 1 month. People
don't send in the correct document(s). They have a full rebuttal service.

Simply follow the instructions and invest 98p in recorded delivery. 6 weeks
later a cheque for £84 drops through your letterbox.

I've done this for several years too and have never had a problem.  I
just select companies for cashback deals who have a decent history and
a trusted brand.

Have a look at www.mobileshop.com (been around for years) and click on
their "12 Months FREE Deals" thing from the list on the left.  Have a
look at the phones you're interested in, have a look at the same
phones in highstreet shops if you want, check out the network coverage
and then buy buy buy.

It might be worth noting that some of these "12 months free" deals
*may* have an 18-month contract so you need to work out the cost of
the 6 months at the end you'll actually pay for and then work it out
over the whole contract period.  As with most of these cashback deals
you'll end up paying the normal monthly fee and having to claim it
back.  Just make sure you follow wessie's advice on how to do it and
you're unlikely to have a problem.

I've had a 3330 and a 3230 and they were both pretty good.  Robert's got
the 3230 now; the 3330 came a cropper when I dropped it and the screen
broke.  The phone was still working, but I couldn't tell whether it was
switched on or off; neither could I make calls because I couldn't see
what was on the screen.  I replaced it with this:

http://tinyurl.com/324s9o

(resolves to
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5472963/Trail/C$cip%
3D41921.Office,+PC+and+phones%3EC$cip%3D41989.Mobile+phones%3EC$cip%
3D41992.T-mobile+Mobile+phones.htm)

I think I paid about £40 for it in the local Orange shop, which isn't
too bad considering the cost of a lot of today's phones.

I'm possibly about to offload my old Nokia 6230 (vodafone). It does just
about everything but it's a few years old so isn't as all-singing
all-dancing as current models. Going rate on ebay seems to be 30-50
quid, I'll take 25.

Failing that, I've got a Nokia 3200 (Vodafone-badged cover, but
allegedly unlocked) of unknown parentage which you can take off my hands
for free. It's got a camera but not much else and it's worth buttons.

There's no difference. Stick a PAYG sim in it and it's PAYG. Stick a sim

See above re: PAYG. I've had a Virgin Mobile sim in it and it seemed to
make calls just fine and the camera worked. Couldn't pick up voicemail,
but I think that was just a settings thing - bung in the right settings
from Vodafone and you should be laughing. Either way, it's free and...

SWMBO got a PAYG phone from Orange for a tenner a couple of months

Whenever I upgrade my orange phone, they send me a free PAYG SIM and I
re-register my old phone with it and pass it to parents. Check if you
have any friends who're flashing round their fancy new phone and slip
'em a few drinks for their old one ...

then stick a sim in it.

Orange payg rocks for electronic pocketwatch owners.  I still have

Possibly, but it'd be a Merc 250D - while it's been reliable so far,

Laura's old Toshiba TS10[1] is now surplus to requirements.  Not a
leading-edge all-time classic, but it's kinda quirky, pleasant to use and
free.  I think it's locked to Vodafone, and the glass over the camera lens
is cracked (although this doesn't show up on photographs).

Many horriblemarkets now sell incredibly cheap phones, but I don't know
whether they have cameras.

Virgin are top for PAYG.  You can PAYG by direct debit.  No need for top
ups or credit that expires before you use it.  You just make the call and
get a bill at the end of the month that is automagicall paid by DD.  My
bills are usually in the region of 53p in a particularly heavy use month.
You can get a SIM card on its own for about a tenner with £5 credit on it
to start with.  They may also do some suitable phones for not very much.
Also, if you have a Virgin phone and shop in their stores, you get £1 in
top up vouchers for each £10 spent, if you show them the Virgin phone
(turned on to show the logo on screen).

Possibly why I don't want to be paying $Stupidamounts per month on a call
plan where I would just be using it to take advantage of the free minutes.
I'm sure there are other people out there who don't feel the urge to be
talking to someone else at every hour of the day or night, driving to
work, walking round the horriblemarket or pretending to work in the office
with a mobile phone permanently glued to their ear.

I make calls when I need to.  When I don't need to, I don't want to be
paying for the privilege.  When I'm not using it or expecting a call, my
phone is turned off.

Yes, I also have a mobile for work, which is on during work hours, but my
quarterly calls are around £5 on top of the contract fee of £5/month.  I'm
seriously considering persuading work to let me change to Virgin for that,
as it would save them money.

Mine is similar.

I reckon on £10/month on work calls, about 1/2 that on personal calls
(with Virgin mobile).. and I dread to think about land-line calls, maybe
a couple of hours a day, some of that international.

I must be old-fashioned as I still prefer to have a telephone
conversation sat at a desk, using a land-line.

In any case, I seem fairly incapable of holding a sensible conversation
on the phone while trying to do something else.  And vice versa, which
is why I never ever have the phone switched on while I'm driving.

4 minutes on Virgin PAYG would be 45p.

In the past month my mobile lists 329 seconds of calls. About half of
them are to the Answerphone to pick up messages that someone could have
waited till they saw me to relate.

Most of my friends are either in the shed or live near enough to walk
round to if I want a chat.

I are on virgin PAYG, and calls to the voicemule thingy are both free
and not logged.

My jbex phone rings 3 times and goes to voicemail.  I then get an
dialogue box from the phone saying "missed call" as though it is my
fault.  I have to delete that.  Then I get a text message saying I
have voicemail.  I have to delete that.  Then there is another
dialogue box saying that I have voice mail.  I have to delete that.
Then I collect the voicemail, which invariably says "can you ring me
back" so I delete that, select the missed call list and dial back
again.

Drives me bluddy crackers some days.

I don't even have a mobile phone. Therefore I am infinitely lonely, because
no other form of human contact is even imaginable any more.

I find it extremely annoying that people assume because a text has been sent
I have received it and then get annoyed some days later when I contact them
after getting back into an area with reception and wading through the list

AH and Blondie in one place at one time. Doesn't that contravene Safe by

There's a question I never thought would get asked.

If they turned on SMS delivery reports they'd know when you[r phone] got it.

And, depending on their contract and useage, end up paying twice as much
for their texts.

That's their problem, not mine. _They_ want to be able to assume that
I've received their SMSes; _they_ can take the trouble for it. I'm not
required to be a slave to my mobile terrorist.

doesn't work (the same way) on all netjbexf, but.  On Orange, you could
prefix the message with "RCT " and get a delivery report, O2 has some other
system and some netjbexf don't do it at all.  Some phones have a setting for
it so it does it automagically, and some don't.

needs a bit of standardisation, IMHO.

But when you tried that with me, all I got was a strange message
preceded by 'rct' and I had to phone you to ask what on earth Rhondda
Cynon Taff had to do with anything.

To email me see 'from' in headers; use your net know-how to find the
domain, and put my real name in front thereof.

quite.  on O2 you put something else, and on other networks something
else-else or they don't do it.

I think quite a few do, but it's a network-dependent function so that it's
not necessarily enabled on every phone of type X
