Anyone got a phone going cheap? Oh, and a car?

marina - 02 Aug 2007 17:47 GMT Yes, I've decided it's time to join in - I want a mobile phone. Cheap and cheerful, PAYG, reliable, easy to use, with a camera (but it doesn't have to be a good one). Anyone got a fairly decent one going cheap?
And my friend wants a cheap, reliable little car - anyone outing one?

That said, my current phobile has a camera (not brilliant, but it does have one) and cost around £40 from one of Orange's retail outlets. You'll probably find that other netjbexf have retail shops TAAW, and of course wibbles. They might also have similar offers.

Works for me. You'll need to be fairly disciplined to claim the rebates in the time windows, though.
I'm currently on a £35 a month Vodafone tariff, which works out free for 12 months after the final rebate.
Come Novemeber I'll cancel this contract and sign up to another one.
I got the last one from http://www.coolnewmobile.co.uk/ but they seem to be mainly 18 month contracts now.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/ has details of contract & PAYG deals e.g. http://www.hotukdeals.com/deal/40719/motorola-krzr-k1-lg-chocolate-nokia The phones are unfashionable but perfectly serviceable, considering the overall cost of bugger all.

When you're shopping for a mobile phone you need to think about which network you're on and then go from there. Check out the various mobile websites and use their postcode search boxes to check for coverage around your home, place of work and other places where you go a lot.
The prettiest and most perfect mobile phone in the world isn't going to be much use if you've got coverage.
Some networks share or 'contract out' their coverage. For example, "3" used to roam on o2 but they now roam on Orange therefore if you have good Orange coverage in your area then you'll have good 2G coverage on 3. If you're like me then you'll have 2G coverage but 'fringe' 3G coverage (3 uses its own network for 3G) which meant I had utter sh.t reception on my old Nokia e61 because the phone would always lean towards the fringe 3G coverage and keep losing signal all the effing time and 3's custom phone firmware meant that I couldn't disable 3G.

Fine phone, apart from some software bugs that are being ironed out.
And it was a free upgrade 'cos I use it lots and the contract allowed it.

I bought Mum a Nokia 3330 a while ago 'cos some git in the phone shop had sold her a tiny Motorola which wasn't even slightly suitable for an 84 year old with MS and slow fingers. £6 didn't seem too much for a nice big phone with big buttons.

Actually, my current phone, over 12 months and once the cashback checks are in, will net me a profit of £50 (well about £45 once you factor in the registered post costs for the rebate claims).
I will get a 100% line rental rebate, of £420 from the vendor. As I went to their website via the Quidco portal, I will get a further £50 cashback, just from clicking on a link.

I've done this with at least 4 different firms in recent years. I've always received the rebate cheques. Even if one in five goes pear shaped, I've had good value for money. I get the benefit of a £35 a month contract with no net cost to me. Of course, I'm paying £35 a month to Vodafone in advance and waiting for the rebates from the retailer. This no doubt aids their cash flow and gives them a market share boost. This arrangement suits me.

Have a look at www.mobileshop.com (been around for years) and click on their "12 Months FREE Deals" thing from the list on the left. Have a look at the phones you're interested in, have a look at the same phones in highstreet shops if you want, check out the network coverage and then buy buy buy.
It might be worth noting that some of these "12 months free" deals *may* have an 18-month contract so you need to work out the cost of the 6 months at the end you'll actually pay for and then work it out over the whole contract period. As with most of these cashback deals you'll end up paying the normal monthly fee and having to claim it back. Just make sure you follow wessie's advice on how to do it and you're unlikely to have a problem.

I've had a 3330 and a 3230 and they were both pretty good. Robert's got the 3230 now; the 3330 came a cropper when I dropped it and the screen broke. The phone was still working, but I couldn't tell whether it was switched on or off; neither could I make calls because I couldn't see what was on the screen. I replaced it with this:

I think I paid about £40 for it in the local Orange shop, which isn't too bad considering the cost of a lot of today's phones.

Virgin are top for PAYG. You can PAYG by direct debit. No need for top ups or credit that expires before you use it. You just make the call and get a bill at the end of the month that is automagicall paid by DD. My bills are usually in the region of 53p in a particularly heavy use month. You can get a SIM card on its own for about a tenner with £5 credit on it to start with. They may also do some suitable phones for not very much. Also, if you have a Virgin phone and shop in their stores, you get £1 in top up vouchers for each £10 spent, if you show them the Virgin phone (turned on to show the logo on screen).

I make calls when I need to. When I don't need to, I don't want to be paying for the privilege. When I'm not using it or expecting a call, my phone is turned off.
Yes, I also have a mobile for work, which is on during work hours, but my quarterly calls are around £5 on top of the contract fee of £5/month. I'm seriously considering persuading work to let me change to Virgin for that, as it would save them money.

I reckon on £10/month on work calls, about 1/2 that on personal calls (with Virgin mobile).. and I dread to think about land-line calls, maybe a couple of hours a day, some of that international.
I must be old-fashioned as I still prefer to have a telephone conversation sat at a desk, using a land-line.

I are on virgin PAYG, and calls to the voicemule thingy are both free and not logged.
My jbex phone rings 3 times and goes to voicemail. I then get an dialogue box from the phone saying "missed call" as though it is my fault. I have to delete that. Then I get a text message saying I have voicemail. I have to delete that. Then there is another dialogue box saying that I have voice mail. I have to delete that. Then I collect the voicemail, which invariably says "can you ring me back" so I delete that, select the missed call list and dial back again.
