Went out for a nice ride on the only sunny day last month and got
caught doing 89mph on a country road. The rozzers were using a radar
gun and bagged 2 more bikers while they were processing me :( It was
basically a moneymaking gig for North Yorkshire Police cos it was
halfway down a dead straight country road between two fields, with no
bends or junctions i.e. buggerall chance of accidents - although I
almost ran over the copper when he jumped out from behind the hedge to
stop me!

Anyway, I surrendered my license for the 3 points and paid the £60.
Anyone here know how long it's gonna take to get my license back from
the DVLA? I wanna test ride a fireblade so need my license back before
I kiss it goodbye permanently }:)

Almost is not good enough. Go back and have another crack at him.

For 29mph over the limit, that was remarkably light IMHO.

A week or two.

For 26 mph over the limit I had to plead on the courts mercy and got 5
points and £210.

They very kindly vascared me after a 60 mph fixed camera so I hadn't
quite wound it back up enough to lose my license.

For 27 over the limit (57 in a 30, although it wasn't as bad as it
sounds as they pinged me, as the photo showed, with my front wheel on
the line between the GLF signs (although if they'd waited five seconds
they'd have got me doing 120 in the 60)) and after appealing to their
sense of fair play (anybody doing up to 26 over the limit
automatically gets the standard), they relented and let me off with
the 60 quid and three points.

Not bad, a work colleagues son got 6 points and a ban for 54 in a 30.
He did argue with the copper that it should be a 40 FFS so no wonder
it went to court. Reduced to 5 points on appeal.

IIRC doesn't go to DVLA, they just scribble on it at the local office
and send it back. or at least that's what Cambridge did to mine.

I got it back in about a week after I paid the £60.

I take it this is one of those "lets make this perfectly safe and fast
dual carriage-way a 60" limits?

There's one on my commute to/from work - it's easy double the limit
there and very easy to triple it, if you give it some beans in the
preceding 40 section.

yup - exactly that - a bit of dual carriage-way with roundabouts at
either end, but no turn-offs between, and hardly ever much in the way
of traffic.

Well, this is a 60 straight away from the roundabout, but it's just
long enough to take the RX to the beep in in 5th gear before it's time
to think about slowing down again.

It's rude not to do it.

There's on on my way to work that went from 70 to 50, overnight.  I
think it's more dangerous now as everyone is half asleep on it.

Quite.  This one was changed from NSL[1] in January and for a long
while people just seemed to ignore it with most still doing 70-80mph.
Now more and more people are adhering to it.  It's only a matter of
time before the spee^h^h^hafety cameras are put up.

[1] Original 40 extended to include what was NSL previously.  Rest of
old NSL made 60.

I did 35 miles of the M5 at 50mph yesterday because I've got one of
those silly spare wheels that you can't drive at proper speeds on.

I really struggled to pay attention and found myself drifting off and
daydreaming quite a lot.

Hmmm.  I've done more than a few miles on a space-saver

They're good 50 75~80, no problem  :-)

Er ... I didn't even realise you *couldn't* do more than 50 on them.

When I tore the left front tyre off the Saab recently, I was doing 80-
100 on the way home on the spacesaver.  I'm bloody glad I didn't know or
I'd have died, clearly :)

Didn't JP (or one of his troops) do someone a while back for driving at
over 50 on a spacesaver? Did him for having a defective tyre (i.e. not
used in accordance with its rating), IIRC.

It's too big!  Besides, I like finding things out by experimentation!

Mine has a huge sticker on it that says "Max 80kph".  Given how skinny
it is, I was happy to take it easy.  Particularly when braking because
the contact patch of the other tyres is about 4 times the size.

Oh yeah ... ISTR some sort of sticker, yeah.  Didn't read it, mind.

It was raining pretty hard, on and off, while driving home, and nothing
untoward happened, so it must have been safe; I took it a bit steady on
the corners though.

So?  I was pissed off at having a tyre (later found to be 2 tyres)
ripped to shreds by Glos roads.

Sticker me no stickers, would have been my stance.

Anyway, it did a peak of about 110, so it must have been fine, else I'd
have died, and I don't think I did.

Mmmmmm yes if they could make that into an aftershave I'd wear it.

I also use DKNY, and latterly Fahrenheit 32, except I'm not sure the 32
suits me; it's a bit flowery, so I don't think  I'll buy it again.

I wouldn't know. I haven't been paid in months, coz I haven't got around
to sorting out my company bank account yet.

OTOH the concept that a company owes me over £50,000 is quite nice, yes
:)

I must have been thinking of Tommy Cooper:

"You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They
left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine.' So that
was nice."

If it really was a "dead straight road with buggerall chance of an
