As part of the ongoing quest to decide what I want next, what are your
thoughts on this?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260148846077

Second time listed (though, bizarrely, only a 3 day listing) and a price
drop from the first time around and still no sale. Problem, too pricey
or just too yellow?

Saw that but how much difference in price would luggage, and being a
year younger, make?

There was no reserve so the BiN doesn't really mean much and there's no
harm in being optimistic with your BiN :)

Not quite, as the yellow one didn't sell.

That was my figure for an optimistic BIN, remember.

If the seller set a realistic starting price of say £1500 then the auction
might run as far as £2k. Only might as the market is flat in general terms;
the colour is sh.t and anyone planning a tour this year[1] will have
already sourced a suitable bike.

It would suit the old Bear quite well really. Decent riding position and he
likes the 996 engine.

Do you reckon he has the mein to ride such a yellow bike?

Corfield and I manage it with a certain gravitas. Darsy bottled it after a

How you extrapolate 2 tiny flashes of yellow on the side of a boot into
that I have no idea, but yes, I'd buy something like that.  I like
yellow bikes. I'd gladly own a 998 biposto in yellow, as I think they
look even better than in red.

But the ST2/4 thing leaves me cold.  Looks like a dog's dinner, and the
concept of a Ducati tourer is ... well it's f.cked up, that's what it
is.

Y'see time has dulled my memory of those boots. I had a mental picture of
something bright and flashy down to the toes in softest kidskin. A quick
google suggests yours are something more conservative and it was possibly
another UKRM'er.

Sports Tourer old chap. I like the S as it has an unmunged engine and it was
cheep cheep.

Tourers have munged engines, bit like a GTR1400 over a ZZR1400 IYSWIM.

heh. WUN will be along shortly at a speed so huge it'll make your eyes
bleed when he blasts past, ignoring your bait.

Ok; let me summarise the ST for you;

It's slow.
It's ugly.
It has no useful toys.
It isn't a true tourer.
It's gay.
It's a tourer from a company whose only skill is making sports bikes.

etc etc.

It reminds me of a VFR750 from 10 years ago, only with fewer cylinders.

But they aren't the crate on legs that is the ST series; they're
sportsbikes.

Same engine frame wheels brakes and suspenders. Does for me.

and so well over my "use and abuse" bar

At the risk of sounding pedantic I see no reason in buying an ST4 when a 4S
goes for very similar money. A "sports touring" Ducati is a border line
idea. I think the latter carries it of due to the engine and the quality of
the cycle components.

The 916 engine is ok. The 996 engine is a joy. Faster, more flexible and
more reliable I believe.

The "S" has marchesini wheels, remote preload adjustable Ohlins, top of
their range Showa forks and Brembo Goldline brakes.  I think the basic model
has lower spec components in all respects.

...and for god sake don't buy a yellow bike!
