I was sort of hoping that there would be some sort of identification on
the rack that could be matched to a top box fitting or something. Or is
that un-Italian?

I think there's only 2 types anyway; Monokey and Monolock. Monolock is
a bit smaller and usually fitted to scooters.
I've only ever used the Monokey stuff and can I don't think Monolock
panniers fit onto it. Some Kappa stuff does thobut.
