So I've repaired my pals SV, but it's been sitting in my garage for a week
or two due to waiting for parts and "stuff", so I suggested he try starting
it inside the garage before wheeling it out into the rain. Good thinking,
sez he and promptly hits the starter. The SV whirrs into life and he's a
happy camper.

"When did you last start yours"? he asked and as it's been a few weeks
(repairs to others makes mine sit at the back of the queue) I decided that
starting it and running it until the fan kicked in a couple of times would
burn off any condensation, so I stuck the key in and hit the starter button.

It turned over and over and over and over...... and I thought"This is VERY
un-Zed-like" but it still refused to start. Anyway I gave up, Ian f.cked off
on his SV and I went back in the house. An hour later I was sitting having a
brew when another thought (2 in one day? f.ck ME!) came to me. Maybe the
fact that the bike hasn't been started for a week or two coupled to the fact
that the fuel tank wasn't even in the f.cking garage, let alone on the bike,
may have something to do with it.

I know, I know...

Reminds me of trying to start the 6R after I gave it a thorough
service. I'd forgotten that I'd stuffed the car inlets with tissue to
stop any crap falling in. Took me a while to work out why it wasn't
starting.

Yes well, erm...

When I changed the zorst on the Zephyr I had cause to take out Mr
Kawasaki's tools from under the seat.  Fitted zorst and bloody thing
would not start.

Puzzled over it for ages (even posted here for advice iirc), had a brew
and...

Noticed the flap from the tool roll was completely covering the air
intake.

A tool roll isn't *quite* as obvious as a many litre fuel tank though. And
let's be right here, my tank is blazing f.cking orange so even a blind man
would've spotted it wasn't present.

But that's no excuse for the bloke who was with me for not missing the tank.
He's only 40.

It got my bother when we were out too. He managed to hit it when he was
"emergency braking" and he wondered why the motor had stopped. Has cranking
for ages before he spotted me pointing at it.

Heh. My usual trick is to start the 748 with the
lock still looped through the frame and the rear
wheel, laying on the rear exhaust header.

Unfortunately the vinyl cover melts before you
smell it or notice the smoke.
