Took the Blackbird for the new tyres. Bald tyre on lose chippings was
interesting.

Mechanic at garage reverses newish Merc 4x4 into the secretaries
spotless Megan[1].  I guess he'll be drinking just water for the next
few weeks.

Set off back home, these Blackbirds don't half pick up speed fast and
sooooo smooth.

<prediction>I'm going to lose my licence</p>
<reality>I'm going to lose my life</r>

There is a knocking coming from the front, I stop and investigate.  A
f.cking bolt missing from my caliper. Phone garage who suggest I get
back there quick, not with only one bolt in my brake I don't. Mechanic
came out, said thank God it wasn't the side he did, took the other
'finger tight' bolt and went back to garage to get another one.

Can someone please recommend a GOOD garage in south Cumbria, before I
die.

[1] You should have seen how fast they dived for the t-cut. I guess
the Merc owner was expected back soon.

Whereas a new tyre on loose chippings would have been fine, right?

Actually yes.  Even though the bike was still slipping on the
chippings on the bends, I felt more in control.

Purely psychological.

If you're riding on marbles, it doesn't really matter what the middle
layer is, if you follow me.

Quite, on a dry road you don't need any tread on your tyres IYSWIM.

As for the loose calipers, I would have been straight round to my local Plod
shop most likely. They need to be up on a charge for that. No *really*. No
f.cking excuse whatsoever. A decent workshop will have the foreman do a
quick sanity check before a bike leaves. Nothing else they could have done
was more likely to injure you.

On the bright side, despite being a big girls blouse, you didn't bin it on
the new tyres.

I've never had a vehicle road tested by a fitter after tyres were changed.
Car or bike.

My missus whished that a road test was done on her Rover 3.5 a few years ago
following a trye change. The rear nearside wheel came off on the A666 on her
way to the shops after geting the tyres done.

The firm weren't impressed with the fitters when I rang them.

Don't be daft - no one does a road test after fitting tyres.  As Darsy
says, I'd be pissed off if they did.

I missed this was just a tyre change?
Even though, well I didn't suggest a test ride, the foreman in any decent
tyre outlet also does a sanity check. My local goes round with a torque
wrench.

I've never had motorbike tyres fitted in a place where the foreman
needs to check his fitters know what they're doing and if it ever
happened I wouldn't go back.

Where we get our tyres fitted the lads that fit the bike tyres all
ride bikes and either one or two of them race so I'm happy that they
know what they're doing.

The local shop in Holywood does bikes and cars but I went to a bike only
place near Leeds recently, again there were two of them and they did a quick
sanity check of each other.

Of course it doesn't always work. The BBC R80 I sent out with a loose sump
plug had been checked and ridden by the workshop manager. We always
suspected a rogue stone came up at an amazing angle and loosened the plug
;o)

It's easy to get everything right when there is plenty of time. When the
work is piling up or there is a queue of 3 bikes waiting for tyres some
people do forget things.

Is it a Plod issue or Trading Standards?  If the second bolt had dropped out
the likelyhood of caliper interfering with the wheel was a destinct
posibility.  I was thinking last night about contacting trading standards,
not only to report them, but for advice on a better garage.

I've been called worse.  The last time I bought tyres for the GSX1100F, it
was pissing down. I didn't bin it then either.

Well at the time I would have ridden straight to Plod. If they showed no
interest I would have gone to TS.

I essentially agree - the tread makes no difference at all.

However, a bald tyre implies that the profile has gone south too,
which does alter the steering characteristics significantly,
especially on a (relatively) long and heavy bike like a Blackbird.
That effect, in combination with a loose surface, might explain the
OP's comments.

Yes. With the old tyres the handling was off,  bars wanted to turn into
corners more that needed, so took some work to keep bike on the line I
wanted.  Compensating for drift on the chippings was hard work. New tyres
handled perfectly with little effort to get the bike to go where I wanted,
even with some rear end drift.

GS Motorcycles in Kendal have always been good to me.

Thanks, I'll give them a try next time. I may even pop in and see them
when I'm that way on Saturday.  I need some rear brake pads.
