Question for Timo and others familiar with Germany

I am currently considering where to go on my hols in mid September. I
haven't done much exploring in Germany but have been to Berlin and a
long while ago to Koln and Dusseldorf / Rhine Ruhr area.

I prefer to stay in cities with decent public transport in the area and
to allow escapes to adjacent places. I don't drive and wouldn't be
hiring a bike so the public transport bit is important for mobility.

I like to explore and am happy toddling about looking at buildings,
parks and gardens, doing some photography and will happily dip a toe
into museums etc.  Good food and drink is an added essential.  I'm not
too overjoyed by places that are just tourist traps and have nothing
else to redeem themselves.

Any suggestions for interesting bits of Germany to see?

Munchen sounds like an ideal base.

TBH I love the city.

The museum is top notch.
Food & drink - check.
Public transpot - check.
Surrounding area - Dachau, Castles, Gardens, Hour on the train to Garmisch /
Friedrichschafen etc.

Seconded and I know PC will enjoy exploring the public transport there.
We're off in January (for the second time).

I lived in Dessau before unification and always enjoyed trips to Leipzig.

Munich as suggested elsewhere has pretty much everything you need.
I'm due to go there sometime soon on business, I hope I can
coincidentally arrange the trip at the same time as the Beer Fest,
like I did last time.

Hamburg is pretty good as well - nice mix of the high & low.

As everybody else said, Munich is pretty much ticking all boxes
including the tourist trap part.

There are plenty of museums to go to (not only the Deutsches Museum but
several art museums like http://www.pinakothek.de/), public transport
is decent and should get you pretty much anywhere you'd want to go and
a lot of places you probably don't. Of course there are several parks
and plenty of beer gardens.

In contrast to what other have said I'd avoid going during the
Oktoberfest unless you specifically want to see that; It'll be even
more expensive than usual (and Munich *is* expensive) plus there are
too many drunk people about for my liking.

Another supposedly very beautiful town that I haven't been to is
Dresden - may be worth a thought, too.

True.  My god father was Consul General in Munich and he always said
it was a PITA.  But I dind't find it bad, compared with, say,Croydon
on the average Saturday evening at kicking out time.

The centre is nice but it's quite small and there wasn't a lot to see
when I was there >5 years ago.  Enough for a couple of days, maybe.
The outskirts are pretty grim - Soviet era rebuilding.

Trier is a lovely city. Bendy buses galore. Boats along the Mosel. Open top
sightseeing buses. Only 40mins from Luxembourg airport.
It's not a huge place and most of the historic sites are walkable if you
are based in the city centre. It was capital of the Holy Roman Empire for a
while.
Tourist info at www.trier.de (UKflag for English version in corner).
Sometime in Sept they have a wine festival IIRC. They had an excellent big
brass band playing by the Porta Negra when I visited.

Everyone having gone for Muenchen, but I'd not miss Nuernberg - smaller,
more intimate, a couple of museums, castle, springs, churches, zoo,
pretend to be Hitler at the dutzenteig etc and completely walkable or a
short journey with a bus or tram

A couple of days would be adequate

There's bound to be a beer festival or 10 going on somewhere

Doable for a day trip from Munich, like we did last time - ICE is only
about 1.5 hours journey and a tram journey to the rally grounds.

Not if you want to see the museum, castle,  and get a bit of the night
life (underground bars in the wine cellars up near the castle - that
sort of thing)

Accommodation there is also significantly cheaper than Munich
