Is this V-twin thing a bit of a myth?

AndrewR - 28 Aug 2007 13:28 GMT Now that I've got a V-twin for the first time everybody[1] keeps saying to me, "I expect it's got power everywhere, has it?" and it may be just me, but no it hasn't
What it's got is *bloody huge* step in power from 6k which just keep on coming up until 10k, but below 6k it's nothing special.
Admittedly it's much easier to, say, come out of a corner over 6k and tap the power than it was on the 6R (where the big step was at 11k), but I[3] was expecting it to pull smoothly and evenly from 3k with a very linear delivery.
Is this unusual for a V-twin? I rode Eddie's Falco a couple of years ago, but can't remember a damn thing about it.
[1] Not *everybody*, my grandma[2], for example, hasn't mentioned it. [2] d. 1997 [3] And everybody[4] else, apparently [4] Except my grandma

Ducati's are the same. The 996 makes power between 5 and 9k, it's tractable enough below but not quick.

My TLR felt very flat at low revs compared to my Tuono (but pulled more smoothly) and didn't really have a power step: it woke up a bit at 7K but basically pulled harder and harder the faster it went until it hit the red line.
My Tuono has a similar power delivery to your bike from the sounds of it: TBH I'm surprised they haven't tuned that step out. It's exacerbated by a slight flat spot somewhere around 5.5K.
My Guzzi does deliver more oomph at around 6K, which is relatively hight up its RPM scale, so yes, even that needs to be revved to get the most out of the engine. It will also chug along in a civilized fashion at pretty low revs, thanks to that massive flywheel.

It's > exacerbated by a slight flat spot somewhere around 5.5K. a number of bikes have a flat spot at the same revs, regardless of the number of cylinders. My ex CBR600FX was a prime example. Something to do with the arbitrary rpm, decided by some Eurocrat, that should be used for emissions measurements during type approval, IIRC.

Given only a poxy limited 100 bhp I suppose that is to be expected. It does make it easier to get round greasy hairpins. I can always give the regular R1 more of a challenge at wet meetings.

The standard graph from the Capo shows linear power but the torque isn't all down the bottom end as most would think.

In comparison to the R1, himself's Mille is torquey initially with more power low down 3 - 6k (and according to the dyno), but then it runs out of steam so to speak & he has to change up gear quicker. The dyno showed it has more grunt lower down, whereas the R1 has smoother power and keeps going into 11/12k. But I have to admit, the Mille wheelies better than mine & is great fun to ride :-)

are you sure you're opening the throttle enough?
I rode SimonK's Mille a few years back, and - compared to my 'blade - it did pull harder from low RPM.

Bike weight = shoebox full of cotton wool Bike power = ~2 knackered ZX-6Rs sellotaped together Rider ability = Muppet (and not a cool Muppet, either - one of the dorky ones)
My expectation was that all of the power would be available from 4 rpm, meaning I'd never have to do anything scary, like turn the throttle.
Instead it's like a bloody souped up 400 - nothing useful below 6k and then it's yanking yer arms off and beating you with the soggy ends.
FFS - can you just ride it and tell me if it's busted or not?

Remove airbox, fit some 2" long tubes to the throttle body inlets, replace airbox, enjoy.
Well it should work in theory...

The Other Mille, which I suspect is the same one that AndrewR has, was definitely more gutless low-down, though. It also had a sh.t clutch, and even dodgier electrics than the first. Great bike though.
