I've decide the pink Tiger's definitely going, but haven't decided what
to replace it with yet. It's used for:

1. 170 mile round trip commute (but only once a month, give or take).
2. Blatting to warmer climes, 2 up with packed out topbox, panniers &
tank bag.
3. Visits to client sites, which can be anywhere from 20 to 230 miles
away.
4. Weekend fun when the weather's too shitty to take the MV.
5. 'Soft' roading (mainly the gravel tracks on Salisbury Plain).

The reason the Tiger's not scratching the itch is simply because it's
not fun enough. Its use is mainly practical, but it needs to put a grin
on my face at the same time, & the Tiger's power-to-weight ratio isn't
up to that (hence the attempted engine swap).

So what should I get? The soft-roading can be removed from the list as
the RatTig fills that hole. A Benelli Tre-K is top of the list, but I'm
out of touch with t'other options, not having bought any motorcycle
rags for years. Inspire me.

If it wasn't for 2) I would say Morini Corsaro 1200. Pillion seat not
very generous and possibly no hard luggage option.

2) does rather rule it out, as does 3) I suspect. If I was going for
something of that ilk, it'd be a Brutale.

A good 25bhp at least down on the Tre-K, & a bit too challenging in the

I should probably have added 'no de-tuned 4 cylinder UJMs' to the

Scared of riding a litre class sports bike and then realising your MV

Heh, I'll have you know my MV's more powerful than any other 750 tyvm.
And even if it wasn't, I still would've bought it.

So easy. I thought you might have resisted for an hour or two.

I've given serious consideration to a nitrous oxide kit for mine.
They're dirt cheap to buy but I'm too lazy to keep getting refills. I
suppose I could just buy a couple of spare bottles and then do a batch
at a time. It's cheap performance and not as obvious as a turbo.

I know - isn't that always the case? What I need is a Goldwing that
turns into an MV that turns into a KTM EXC that turns into a CR500 SM,
all at the flick of a switch.

2006, the last bikes made had 1050 Sprint swingarms and a revised gear
change linkage[1] amongst other small changes. Cosmetically they are
identical to 2004 onwards models like mine.

[1] Quite why they fitted a linkage at all is beyond me. Mine has a
lever that bolts directly onto the shaft coming out of the engine and
there's f.ck all wrong with the way it feels.

ZZR1100, it's a bad muthafucka when you want it, a little puppy when
you dont, you can get full luggage & bar risers to make it like a
proper sports tourer.

If you dont believe me, have a go on mine. Made me nearly sh.t kittens
today, I gave it far too much on a left hander, but the thing just slid
& sort of gripped at the same time. It made me smile once i had got a
grip of it.

It doesn't take a bike god to really get tinto riding a ZZR, but it
takes one to master the side to side weight in a corner. I'm hoping one
here can show me how. It's very heavy, but feels 'better' than any
sportsbike i have ridden. But I'm a big bloke, so maybe it's that?

I managed to throw all 3 of my ZZR1100s around quite nicely, as many
here will testify, and I am nowhere near what you'd call a big bloke. I
was smaller built then as well.

I actually meant that my size is a detriment, I'm open for a bit of
direction. I'm 6 foot 3, most of it is in my legs & arms, nice for a
chap that ;ikes bikes. Mind you, my son is six foot eight at eithteen,
so I really do feel for him....

I was quite amazed by the amount of room on the Ducati, the Zed felt a
bit small by it's side, which is odd.

It's a lardy sports tourer, the fact you're on the big side as well
isn't really going to make that much difference on something that big.

Nige is tall but not all that heavy IIRC from the one time we met, so he has
a lot of leverage but not much mass, IYSIM.  Now I am more used to the
Bandit's weight and lardiness, I find it quite easy to throw about in the
twisty bits, but it does need a lot of shifting my own weight and bullying
it about somewhat.  I'm shorter than Nige (who is a lanky c.nt, really) but
I probably weigh more.

You're obviously riding it incorrectly.  When pushing a B12 on a bit,
the only weight transferring I've indulged in is that involved in
clinging to the bars and avoiding my weight disappearing off the seat
backwards.

I'm not talking about hanging my arse off it or any circus-type manoeuvres.
But it does seem to need wrestling to get the weight on the inside for rapid
changes of direction more than other bikes I have had.  I put it down to the
mass of the thing.  Normal brisk riding, no problem.

Or have I been whooshed?

Big wide Renthals help then, apparently.  I allegedly countersteer
very hard when cracking on, which tends to make me lead into the
corner with my inside shoulder, which obviously pulls my upper body
along with it.  I'm not conscious of doing any real weight shifting
though, not like I used to with the RF900 for example, which would
lead me onto the verge at the merest hint of laziness.

Only a little bit.  How do you keep the front end down?

Possibly, but if I modified it at all it would be to go narrower, lower and
further forward rather than wider.  The fairing rather inhibits this,
though.

I guess I do something similar.  It's hard to describe when you're not
actually doing it (like a lot of things, fnarr) but I think I countersteer
fairly positively, put a fair bit of weight on the inside bar, shoulder down
and persuade it a bit more with the outside knee.  I then relax and feed in
the throttle on the exit.

Pies. Lots of.

The only time I ragged Adies old B12 it took a fair old bit of weight
shifting to keep the thing going something like where I wanted.

Yeah, I heard that Adie shifted a bit of weight once you'd let her off
it.

You don't appear to have much weight to shift, however.  Maybe lardy
old bikes suit lardy old riders better?

Even my 11 stone is enough to influence a bike as to where it wants to
go.

I can drag my lardy old beemer through the bends fairly fast though
so your second point is probably about 50% correct.

I'm not quite ready for that yet, although if budget & space allowed,
I'd get one of those plus something else.
