Another reminder, Long Way Down is on at 9pm tonight on BBC2.

I've nabbed the 9m30s 'promo trailer' from the Long Way Down member
area and thrown it at Google Video for those who have 10 minutes of
their life to waste

Am I the only one not planning to watch this? I like the odd travel
programme and the odd programme about bikes, but two bokes being
blokey (which I imagine will be the dominant theme here) leaves me
pretty cold.

I didn't find the last series they did was overly blokey TBH, actually
quite the opposite, given that a lot of the programme seemed to go int
oUNICEF aid programmes in the regions they traveled through etc.

I just found Long Way Round a bit dull.  Started well, with that lunatic
"mayor" waving an AK47 about, but got quite boring after that.

The weird thing was that I didn't realise it was boring until the 3rd
time I watched it.  I got completely caught up in the hype.

Er, a lot of things are going to be boring by the 3rd time you watch
them, surely.

No, it was boring the first time round, it's just I didn't cotton on
until the 3rd time, when my normally fairly reliable "emperor's new
clothes" muscle started to twitch.

Fair point, mind.

I bought SWMBO the DVD set last 'festive season'[1] and the new series
is already on her wish list for this year. Apparently, it is not Ewan
but Charley that floats her boat.

Some of the more out of the way sections were worth it just for the
views of untamed wilderness and serious rivers. A pity Ewan didn't get
his tackle [2] out more. I wonder if he took it with him on this trip.

He gets his tackle out in every other film he makes.  The Pillow Book
is a prized example where a man even sucks it for him.

Mind you, he doesn't have any clothes on for most of that film.

Ewan's wife joins them on a 650-ish Beemer in Malawi if you want
something with lady bits on it.  Plus there's UNICEF stuff in it and
stuff for Riders For Health (or whatever they're called now) as a
distraction.

Long Way Round (old series) was made for Bravo (a 'man' channel on
Sky) whereas this one is on (Auntie) BBC2 so will cater for a
different audience.

It's a shame Jan Dildo didn't do a similar tour for Wish You Were Here

Yes, the book was wretched.  My profound disappointment was somewat
mollified by the fact that I had taken it out of the library, rather than
waste good money on it or put it on my Christmas list.

One of my mum's strategies, for dealing with her short term memory issues,
is to browse a TV listings magazine as she has her morning cuppa. She
highlights any programme that she fancies watching later.

Long Way Down (and Top Gear incidentally) has been highlighted this
morning.

So, the two people I know who will be watching it are a 77 year old lady
with dementia and a Kentish poof in lust with Ewan. Doesn't sound very
blokey to me.

If it's anything like the original series (LWR), a substantial amount of
the footage will involve Ewan blubbing because he's missing his wife and
kids.

It's "ok".  What gets to me is how it's dressed up as being a great
big adventure.  So adventurous they've got two support vehicles, one
carrying a doctor FFS!

There's plenty of folks who've done these sorts of trips all by

It's unlikely that one could go the "Long Way Round" in the time frame
that they did, while filming it and obtaining visas when they were on
their own.  The amount of space they would have required for film
wouldn't have been more than a couple of bikes could cope with and
wouldn't have done all that well in the wet when going through rivers.

I watched epi 1 of this lot, and so far I'm not impressed at all.

Exactly. They've both proved willing & capable of doing unsupported LD
trips, but that isn't what Long Way Round/Down is about. It's a TV
travel show with a twist. That doesn't mean it isn't a big adventure
for all involved though.

Of course they need support vehicles (to carry all the crew & camera
gear), & I doubt very much if the powers that be (BBC management,
insurance companies & unions) would let it happen without there being a
doctor included. The thing is they don't try to hide any of this.

When Long Way Round was on, loads of people on various bike groups
slated them for basically being spoilt little rich kids, & not 'doing
it properly'. Well loads of people have travelled the world using
public transport too, but I don't see anyone slagging off Michael Palin
for having a support crew with loads of luggage & almost certainly a
doctor too.

Personally I'm jealous as f.ck, & I suspect many of the detractors are
too.

I'm not detracting because I'm jealous (which I am).  I think Ewan and
Charlie are great, and they'd almost certainly do it anyway.  It's
quite clear that they just want to ride their bikes.  (I love the way
Ewan got back on his bike as soon as his plaster cast was removed, and
Charlie said he'd do the same; most of the people I know who love
motorcycling would be the same.)

My criticism is the very process of putting it on TV can't but help
over dramaticise things.

The only thing that overdramatises, er, things, is that f.cking dickhead
yank producer. He was an irritating git in the first series and is
shaping up to be exactly the same this time. If I were them, I'd have
used the Libyan visa fiasco as an excuse to leave the twat at home.

Quick hijack, ta for putting it up on ukrm, and yes the yank producer,
was, how shall we say, American.  So I'll wait for the download and have
a look for meself.

However, I really enjoyed, Long Way Around, yes they had support, yes
people have done it on a unicycle, but they weren't filmed, and that's
what I like watching.  Am I a Luddite?

That's fairly close to what my misses called him, and I'm inclined to
agree.  I too was hoping the visa wouldn't come through.

I am the eternal optimist so I will stick with it for now in the hope
of seeing more biking and scenery and less of Boorman's ugly teeth.

Nope, I did catch the 1st few mins of the poor sole trying to get someone
else to organise all his paer work, and heard mention of setting up the
workshop etc.

I bet he moans about missing wife and kids again.

A lot of people with a lot less money do trips longer than this.
