I took this from the car in the summer, shortly after it was erected.
Anyone have the faintest idea what it might be?

Spot on I reckon.

Automatic air pollution monitoring site would be my guess. Nox, Sox, CO,
PM2.5s etc.

I'm 99.9% with burnt on this one.  They've put one up near my house
and all the nimbys are up in arms about it.  Apparently putting up a
mobile phone mast is bad, but criminal damage[1] to it every weekend
is fine.

Speaking of which: if you travel East on the M4, between junctions 14
and 13, there is a red MOD `Works only' sign pointing on to a proper
motorway exit. This is not marked on the map and I cannot see on any
map where it might lead to. Anybody know what it is?

A monopole mobile phone mast is a much more likely explanation than
mine. At least now it will be safe from a Champ sabotage attempt.

Almost certainly a local mobile phone mast. They tend to stick a
streetlamp on top of them these days though, to make the general public
glance past them and not think about what they are.

If you can be bothered to go back to it, you'll find a company name, O2,
Vodafone etc. and a telephone number on one of those green boxes next to
it which will confirm what it's for.

That also stops the local house owners demanding a drop in their rates
as having one near your house devalues it some what/significantly,
depending on what phone mask scare is going around.

Indeed there is. Quite poorly disguised IMHO - the branches all go the

I really must pop down the East Lancs and look at it, there appear to be
2 in close proximity, not 100% identical, and one has a green box while
the other has a white one.

That would explain why it is different from the mobile mast opposite
