Located in Farnham , Surrey.
Mot till June 08 , Tax till July 08.
23000 miles showing , although I did ride it for 2000 miles with a broken
speedo cable, good condition although to be honest these photos make it look
better than it is.Baglux tank cover and bag included.
Loads of History , old bills , Mot's , handbook etc.
Haynes workshop manual and print out of factory manual.
Bike is pictured with Gilles Variobars which are not included at the meagre
asking price of £750 - the standard bars will be refitted but I'll leave the
variobars on at £850.The Corbin seat shown in the last pic is also available
for another £100 and a little spares package including valve shims is
available for another £75.
I've also got some Baines racing cans at £80 but you'll need to fabricate
brackets for them.So that's £1105 for everything.....
It was serviced by me 2000 miles ago including belts.Everything works ,
starts first time.

Bad form and all that but its only real fault is that a chain adjuster
snapped , which required a creative solution as shown in pic 2.

AONTL. It looks nice.

Cheap as chips too. (No idea if that's the right price - TOG?)

Early 750SSs go for less than a grand, but that's a more than fair price
for one this nice, with the spares.

There were *definitely* some reliability and quality issues with the
early SS bikes, but the 750 is such a strong design that it was less of
an issue than it was with the 900.

You might get the odd electrical gremlin with a bike this age - most can
be sorted by replacing/cleaning the connectors. And the frame paint
looks manky quickly - this one's good, mind.

Biggest downside is the single front disc. It's not bad at all, but the
twin front discs of the later SSs were much better.

Only thing I can really see missing on this one is the pair of rubber
'boots' that cover the mirror mounts, and they're essentially cosmetic
trim anyway.

It also has an alloy swinger, which is a definite plus. Prolly off the
900. The 750 always had a steel swinger. The OP doesn't mention this
bonus!

One thing to remember is that OE 750SS  cans are hard to get, and
whatever anyone tells you, 900SS cans *do not fit*. The header diameter
is the same, but they're mounted further out. They can be made to fit
with brackets, but they don't just bolt on. Aftermarket cans are less of
a problem.

Although with this particular 750SS, it has the mounting point
for the second caliper is there behind the bit of plastic on
the r/h fork bottom. There's a plastic disk on the wheel that
covers the mounting points for the second brake disk, just
remove the three bolts holding that in.

You'd need to buy the caliper (about £30) and a pair of disks
(£60-90) and fit a bigger m/c (about £50 for a 916 Brembo) and
a pair of lines (£30) and some disk bolts you're sorted. You
should be able to do it for less than £200 if you get lucky and
find a m/c with lines and calipers all in one.

Interesting, any of you Ducatisti have a starter motor kicking around
anywhere, or know where I can get one re-conditioned ?

For said 750 SS 1991 mentioned above.

Also - while we're here, anyone have a van / or car with bike trailer that
might be able to move a 750ss from Farnham to Grove (ox12).

Nobbut, it wouldn't surprise me if they were all the same
between at least the 600/750/900SS and probably the Monsters
as well (same engine), if not the rest of the Ducati line.

If you can get it off then any decent repair place should
be able to do it, but first check that it is the starter
motor as the electrics on those were prone to melting the
inadequate connectors and the starter solenoid sockets.

This is exactly what I told him by email. My starter played up, and it
was just corrosion in the switch block to the solenoid.

Steve has already visited the solenoid wiring, so I trust in his diagnosis.

Further investigations will ensue when the steed arrives in Workshop Brownz
tomorrow.

Damn thing knows I'm selling it.
How does a perfectly good bike go into the garage and a month later the
starter appears to be dead?
The solenoid appears to be OK as there's current in and out when the starter
button is pressed and there's current at the starter motor pole - I suppose
it could be insufficient current due to internal corrosion , or the starter
just decided to die whilst it was in the garage.

Hm. My money is still on the solenoid connections. Check it for
corrosion. Oh, and check for corrosion on the s/m pole as well. Then,
when pressing the starter button, give the end of the starter motor a
tap with a hammer.

and the OP seems to be concentrating on the supply side. Check earth straps
on the return side too.

A set of jump leads will aid locating the problem as you can easily bypass
earth straps, solenoid and other wiring.

Are you sure you're getting current, or merely volts? Having the
latter does not mean that you're getting a sufficient quantity of the
former, especially if there's corrosion on the terminals. A good clean
up might let the amps through as well as the volts.
Grimly Curmudgeon - 29 Dec 2007 13:31 GMT
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Steve <steveloukes@hotmail.com>
saying something like:

>How does a perfectly good bike go into the garage and a month later the
>starter appears to be dead?

Simple. High current through marginal connections. Connections that are
supposed to handle several hundred amps reliably, all day long, every
day are nowhere near as shoddy and skimpy as the ones found on starter
circuits.
It's yer makers, playing the trade-off game. It only needs to last so
long and there's no point building it like a Roller, nobody would pay
the price.

If you were keeping it, I'd tell you to simply clean it all up and
simply inspect the starter, replacing brushes only if necessary and
cleaning up the commutator.
Now Brownz can do that little thing.

Oh, I trust you have reduced the price accordingly?

Ah, has the lock in the seat hump broken?

Mine fell out altogether, one day, on the M25. I poked under the seat
with a long screwdriver and a mini-Maglite and popped the catch.

Now I have a small black zip-tie attached to the catch, and it hangs
down, very unobtrusively, by the rear guard. Pull the zip-tie, and the
catch releases.

Par for the course, innit. Same thing happened on
my 748; the lock disintegrated somewhere unknown
and the seat is now removed by pulling the cable
directly.

Its a 'feature' of the Corbin seat - for some reason the key wont turn in
the lock with it fitted , but it all works perfectly on the standard seat.
I never figured it out but the screwdriver method works.
