What sort of helping do you need?

oooh, lovely platy :) any of the following

for the move itself:
- large van[0] and driver[1]
- loading stuff into large van (stuff is mainly in Norwich and Ipswich
but can be collected to Ipswich)
- unloading stuff into house near Bordeaux
- putting bed together

before move:
- advice on best way to get pounds into euros and to the notaire
- advice on registering a business (sole trader or 2 people, whether
it's necessary at all, what type to register)

after move:
- help with renovation
- visitors

renovation weekend parties will be arranged.

[0] van doesn't need to be really large because there's not much
furniture (bed, 3 bookcases, chest of drawers, canvas wardrobe, and a
lot of boxes of music and books)
[1] driver doesn't need to be large at all

nice and simple, but doesn't it get you the worst possible exchange
rate? on 180,000 euros a few points makes a lot of pounds or otherwise,
and the current exchange rate would leave me too broke to buy food
afterwards :(

i've opened an account with Travelex (the company that does furrin munny
for HSBC etc) in the hope that it will be better.

I tell you what. Send it to me via Western Union. I'll look after it.

If you find a better way of transferring money where you're not screwed
by the banks, let me know.

it gets you whatever your bank's exchange rate is on the day you set up the
transfer. the "worst possible exchange rate" i can imagine is if you tried
a cash transaction at one of those bureaux de change on leicester square.

Eh?

I transfered money to a few UKRM people and haven't had to pay any costs (NL
to UK). I didn't hear them complain about getting less money. If you (or a
trusted friend) have a French account, can't you just transfer funds for
free (I had to choose shared costs in online banking)?

Yes, you're missing the fact that UK banks really like filleting their
customers and hence charge quite a lot of money for those who want to
transfer money to part furreign.

Not just UK banks. Funds transfers from any of our Swiss accounts,
either to the UK or to France, always incur a handling charge,
something like 5 fr (2 quid).

Cheapest I could find here to transfer to Germany and Switzerland is

Co-Operative Bank/Smile. I haven't checked their fees lately but they
used to be the cheapest by far. Just had a quick look on the smile
website and the TIPANET transfer to Germany is 8 quid. Switzerland was
more expensive because they do use a different transfer method.

One thing I didn't check is how good the exchange rate is - I don't
think it's way out of line with other banks but proper currency transfer
services are supposed to offer better rates.

Thanks for that - I shall do some investigating. I fancy using Co-op a

Don't go for the basic Co-Op account unless necessary as it pays no
interest whatsoever. Go for a smile one instead (and I can check if
there are any "recommend a mate" promotions going on, but I don't think
so at the moment) as that pays at least some interest...

Doing transfers abroad is no problem from either and it's a lot easier
from a smile account as that can be done from the comfort of your
armchair. Haven't looked at the co-op online banking for a while but it
used to be a different system that was rather dire.

Indeed. You'll send a secure message with all the details using the
website's messaging system. Never had any problems with that and I've
used it on a regular basis until about a year back.

I'd still use that account as my main account if it wasn't for two
reasons - one, it doesn't allow you to download statements into MS Money
(you can print them and type them in :/) and two, Nationwide offers far
better conditions when you're withdrawing money abroad, plus they have
the best MS Money integration in the UK, I get a better interest rate
*and* I get to chose between visiting a branch even down here and bank
online.

We have a Nationwide account for withdrawing cash abroad, but until you
mentioned Smile haven't found an efficient funds transfer mechanism (to
Credit Agricole for paying EDF, local taxes etc.). Even thought of using
a French Paypal account if such a thing exists. Must look in to the
Smile deal.

In fact, I now see that HSBC have allowed 'SEPA' payments of up to £2000
since 28 January. Only available during business hours it seems so can't
fire it up to check on fees until tomorrow.

Unless they've lowered the fees, they're going to be around 12 quid at

There was a leaflet with my latest Alliance & Leicester statement.
Something about transferring funds overseas using an electronic method

I imagine you will be on their database. Whether you're allowed in the
country next time you try to enter could well depend on how suspicious
they find such a purchase.

The most cost-effective rifle I found when planning a deer hunt a
couple of years ago was a Yugoslavian SKS so-called "assualt rifle".
I removed the bayonet since I figured it wouldn't be as effective
as a proper skinning knife.

They sell them at Fleet Farm: http://www.fleetfarm.com/

I use a currencies company. Get near as dammit commercial rate and free
for over 5000GBP. 15 quid if it's less. Swift code and IBAN is all
that's required.

i thought it was my ineptitude and franglais making the information,

this was the site which really upset me. however, it doesn't exactly
match with the <French equivalent of Chamber of Commerce>'s site, so i'm
hoping it's not as bad as that now!

the two businesses i'd be doing are music and running activity holidays.
the first is Profession libérale and the second is Commercant. if i
make sure there's music in all the activity holidays (worked out how to
include it in the cycling tours already!) could i get away with only
registering as musician...? the alternative is to register only for the
holiday business which would lose me all the tax/insurance perks of
being a muso. or i could register as a full-time muso and rent out rooms
to musos and bikers and cyclists (no registration needed if <5 rooms).

argh.

Heh. It's hardly that. It's more of a case that I'm a lazy bugger and
having been meaning to get a round tuit.

We know a couple of people in the Limousin that have set up small
businesses. They reckon it is a must to 'register'. Without the
appropriate 'number' many people will not employ you if you are offering
some kind of craftsmen or building service. Otherwise you may end up
trying to rely on the ex-pat 'black market'.

I may be able to put you in touch. One does landscape gardening/general
garden work the other does building work (except that might stop now he
has leased one of the local hotels).

As to getting the money to the notaire, I thought about the exchange
rate stuff and using something to guard against exchange rate
fluctuation. In the end I decided to take a punt and kept it on deposit
earning interest until the last minute and then just did a 'Swift'
transfer as recommended by dog.

I will probably be going across in late May or early June. Possibly with
a bike trailer, which might have space for one machine. Though you won't
exactly be neighbours as far away as Bordeaux.

Travelex person offered the fix-the-rate-now service, but said it wasn't
a good idea given that the pound is at a record low against the euro,
and the euro is expected to sink sometime this year. i just hope it's
soon. i'll leave transfer as late as possible.

OK, the same taxation regime applies for all small businesses AFAIK. For
hourly rate type building or maintenance work, certainly, everyone works
on the 'devis' system. You sign the devis to agree the estimate. The
devis shows the business registration 'number'. Blowed if I can remember
the official term for it. SWMBO probably will.

>> I may be able to put you in touch.

>yes please!

I think SWMBO has a phone number for the couple most likely to be able
to help (having registered recently). Not on email AFAIK. Does your UKRM
email address work?

That's a useful link. In fact, looking at the copy of a 'devis' SWMBO
found me it is the SIRET number I was thinking about. This may only
apply to tradesmen and builders, but there is information in English
here:

http://www.lost-in-france.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=123&Itemid=28

On that page is a link which fluffycat certainly needs to read about
running a business from home. La declaration d'insaisissabilite -

I get out to Merignac a couple of times a year as one of our Graphics Card
manufacturers is based there. Not to far from Bordeaux. Nice part of the
world and great if you like planes as there is a (iirc) Dassult place
opposite the business park they are based on, which has all sorts of test
flights going in and out most of the day.
