It was quite good, about ten times better than I expected actually. Pretty
diverse crowd, free assessed rides, various manufacturers trying to flog new
bikes and grimacing as people sat on them with muddy feet from the grass. Not
that I am rich enough to buy a new machine, but I sat on a CBR600 just because
it was in front of me. Not much of it, is there? I'm pretty slight, but the
machine seemed to disappear under me.
Also a good opportunity for all the Charlies and Ewans to sit on various new
BMWs. I had to laugh at the prices. Felt a bit sorry for the guys on the KTM
stand - nobody was vaguely interested. Most mainstream manufacturers were
there from Moto Guzzi[1] to Peugeot.
What else... The wall of death (didn't venture in), many stalls selling
everything from clothing to advanced traning (beardy to track days) to tools
to snake oil. Stunt demos, police dog demos, and skid pan demos.
Infinity were there with Arais at discount - I managed to keep my hand
in my pocket and will wait until the BMF show. The quietest stalls were the
ones representing niches of policing, such as volunteering and special
escorting. Why people don't want to give up their free time to be spat at by
hoodies, I have no idea.
It was a bit weird walking around the Peel Centre without my natural suspicion
of the rozzers wanting to nick me.
[1] Mainstream in that I've heard of them.

I thought of hun G650X challenge as a replacement to shite olde Honda XR600
of mine, but they say 8.900 euros... :-/ F800GS over 10.000 and finaly
1200GS over 13.000. Looks like I'll have to look for some used KTM...

Just out of curiosity, what's the price difference between that and the new
F650GS where you are?

Try "configurador" at www.bmw-motorrad.es

According to the site the X Challenge goes for 8900 and both the twin and
the single F650GS cost 8300Eur. That pricing policy doesn't seem very
reasonable to me, at least with the new F650GS in the picture.

KTM really must be regretting not sponsoring Long Way Round when they had
the chance, given how successful it was. I wonder how much of a positive
effect it actually had on BMW's image and sales?

There's no knowing if they'd have made it if they used KTM rather than
BMW so the effect on KTM might have been catastrophic.
BMW must have done well from the two trips but urban warriors have
always like adventure type bikes so they'd have sold well in cities no
matter what.

Possibly because if they don't those 'extra' bits won't get done, and
the volunteers think it's worthwhile?

Change "spat at by hoodies" to "dress up as police officers and feel
important".

On a related note - when buying petrol yesterday I saw that the
headline on the Sunday Express was "Ban the Hoood for Good".
Amusingly, even on the Express's own web site, most reader's comments
seem to think it's a stupid idea

Heh.
"Speaking as a CCTV operator in a Hertfordshire market town, I fully
support the Sunday Express's campaign. I would give anything for a full
facial from some of the boys I spend my time following around the town
centre."
Oh, I say! Should this sort of perverted filth be employed in such a
post?

I was reading that round my old man's yesterday (I have tried,
but he won't see sense) and immediately ordered #1 daughter
(aged six) to remove her hooded top on threat of a custodial
spell. I think he finally saw the irony...
