Never done a bike trip abroad before, any tips as what I need to take that
I'm likely to overlook?

Any tips will be gratefully received (well, the sensible ones will)

The restaurant staff always get a serious tip, after having had to put
up with 3 days of drunken loutish behaviour.

Oh, and fill up with fuel on the Saturday evening if you want to get
home on Sunday.

Two days, actually! But yes, it's a sort of tradition we pass a
breadbasket round on the second night and everyone lobs in a note or two
or a fistful of shrapnel.

I've done bikes and cars abroad. Cars are fairly easy - you have mental
reference (i must drive so that I am next to the curb). I find bikes are
harder to keep orientation - esp turning right and roundabout and stuff.
What I do, is stick little arrows in my mirrors pointing to the right - just
a nudge to keep me on the RHS. What I do find hard though is riding on the
left after a good jaunt overseas. I do tend to round roundabouts the wrong
way. This does cause a little consternation amongst fellow road users. So
now I have arrows pointing left..

Spare bulbs & fuses.  Copies of your V5, licence, passport, etc.  EHIC card.
Basic first aid kit, or at the very least some loperamide. A credit card for
emergencies.  Mobile phone.  Ear plugs.  French phrase book.

Tell your insurers.  Consider breakdown/recovery services.

When you get out of the hospital and have to put £20k on your credit
card you'd probably wish you'd taken one.  Your ins. co. usually waive
the excess if you use your EHIC.

Stick with those who speak a bit, then - if you can't be arsed to
download some sort of a quick course, or learn some basic vocab.

However, you may end up with "experimental" food being ordered at
lunch... or end up buying all the coffees... for the whole bar... for
the entire afternoon.

Learn numbers - useful when filling up - pump numbers and that... also
useful in bars and little shops.

Learn "please", "thanks", "hello", "goodbye", "excuse me", "do you
speak English" and "sorry". All useful and an effort will be
appreciated and some French peeps may decide they can speak English,
all of a sudden

Well he asked - it's up to him to decide.  Definitely the loperamide though,
as most other things can be mimed to a shop assistant without too much risk
of arrest.  Possibly prophylactics too, for the same reason.

haha. Very true. Now that was a memorable trip.

Imagine Karen's chagrin whan I confessed I knew 'the general area' of

All ended well as I recall, as I fortunately spotted several other

I got tugged on the cliquerun a few years back and they wanted to see

Make sure you know exactly where you're going and either go straight
there on your own or expect to be waiting at the side of the road
watching assorted bikes go flying past.

Don't expect all the bikes leaving the ferry to be going to the same
place as you are. This sounds stupid but it's been known for someone
to follow a group of bikes onto the wrong motorway before they
realised what was happening.

Make sure you've got your credit card and don't book drinks to your
room.

It was the run out of Caen that was the most chaotic ever :-)

As I think I said before, this gaggle of bikes came to the first
motorway intersection, and then it was like the Red Arrows doing their
starburst, as every single bike managed to choose a different route :-)

I can't remember this from last year. Do I need to print something off
to show when boarding the ferry or will a passport do to confirm my

You should have received a document from TOG with a boarding reference,
but here you go:
