Carb cleaning ?

I have a carb that seems to have had fuel evaporating in /
throughout  it for some considerable time and needs a good
clean-out - I imagine it has lacquer or similar in the jets and
casting passageways.. it won't run above idle, sounding like fuel
starvation

Any recommended products / chemicals I can flush through to clean it
out
( I have xylene and acetone) or is any carb cleaner as good as
anything ?

Thanks,

Nick

Petrol will clear old petrol deposits, but this would involve taking
out the jets and emulsion tubes and soaking them in a jar or something
- guessing by your post though you are not looking to do this.

If the carb has been sitting with petrol in it, it is likely there
will be deposits around the carb needle and possibly in the emulsion
tube, if it's just the carb needle then you will atleast need to get
to it from the airbox end to spray on the carb cleaner - assuming it
is a CV type carb then see if you can lift the piston, it might be
being starved of fuel as the desposits are holding the needle in the
emulsion tube and stopping it rising.

If there are no deposits on the needle then you will be looking at
stripping the carb to soak the jets.

IME it doesn't.

Depends how old the deposits are probably. I've yet to find a decent
chemical that will shift it easily. Ultrasonic cleaner deffo shifts the
green gunk, but I've yet to find a reliable way to clear out the maze of
twisty little passages (that are all alike)

Spray gun cleaner certainly shifts any crap in the carbs but it will
also f.ck any plastic parts so you really need to strip them down if
any little passages are blocked

A mate used to swear by caustic soda as well but he was a bit of a
nutter

Thanks for the replies.. - I have stripped the carb down to as many
parts as it will go down to, and cleaned out with petrol - there was
a bit of dirt in it, but mainly from the outside - anyway it didn't
run any better afterwards so I feel sure its within the jets /
passageways..  I'll do it again with acetone / xylene as I know that
is what is in one carb cleaner after removing the float assembly and
needle valve

Thanks,

Nick

Is that because Caustic Soda dissolves aluminium and you buy a new set
to replace the now missing ones?
