Ok, so after Kieran and others recommended it, I popped out just now to
Infinity in Clapham [1] and bought one.

http://kriega.com/pages_uk/r35/R35frameset.html

It's an impressive bit of kit, no question (comes with a 10 year
guarantee, which is impressive for something specifically aimed at cack-
handed bikers like me).  Although for 95 sodding quid it wants to be.  I
also *cough* spent 9 quid (yes, nine bastard quid) on a Kriega wallet,
on the grounds I do need a new travelling wallet and it is damn funky :)

http://kriega.com/pages_uk/stash/stash-topframeset.html

The R35 can be added to, by clipping on additional packs, to give it up
to a 35+10 or (according to Infinity, although the Kriega web site
doesn't support the theory) 35+20 litre capacity, but I've stuck with
the plain 35 for the moment as a) they didn't have any packs in stock
and b) my back's complaining enough about biking as it is, without
loading even more on ... this way, I have no choice but to pack light.
From experimenting just now, it seems to carry itself fairly high on the
back, which seems like a good idea, and might even keep it out of the
way of the gixer's solo seat hump.

Still have to try it actually on tour, but it seems superbly made,
although of course not waterproof, which is going to mean bin-bags a go-
go for the TT trip tomorrow [2], which looks like it's going to be soggy
as f.ck - I think Champ had the right idea, chickening out early.

[1] yeah, I know, but Kriega dealers aren't thick on the ground and they
had one in stock and the chaps there today seemed better by far than
Saturday's mob and it's only 10 mins from my front door and ...
[2] coincidentally, a bulk order of Brabantia 50 litre bags turned up
yesterday, so I'll take a small roll of those :)

Well I've been messing about with it and I have to say it's a very
useful device for making sure all one's essentials are in one place ...
mobile, check, shedloads of cash, check (and it's capacious enough even
for EKS), keys, check ... I'm sorry, but I quite like it.

It's still sodding overpriced though, although apparently that quality
of Cordura (1000D) is sodding expensive stuff.

I'm over it now.  Although Kriega's definition of "35 litres" seems a
bit smaller than Berghaus' - but we shall see, come the packing this
evening.

1000D Cordura is tougher than old boots. The boy has a school bag made
out of the stuff and it's the only bag to have lasted more than a term.
Now into it's second year and still no holes or tears.

I'm working on the theory that a) Kieran uses this stuff, and he's of a
similar "solid and manly" build to myself (so it should fit) and b)
anyone offering a 10 year guarantee on stuff they're flogging to bikers
has to be either barking or bulletproof.

Oh it's miles funkier than that.

Less gaylord too.  By several orders of magnitude.

I've got a nice bottle green leather wallet I've had for ages, but for
travelling I needed something a bit more rain-resistant.

Want.

I wonder if I can make one?  I have several rolls of gaffer tape and
I'm not afraid to use them...

Speaking of gaffer tape, I need something to protect the paintwork of
the 10R's arse-end when I put the panniers on.  I'm sure I remember
Champ mentioning gaffer tape previously.  Is this still accepted
wisdom?

I looked at that and thought ten quid was a bit steep, but you're
probably right.

I rigged it all up last night to check where I'd fasten them down and
discovered that the 10R _really_ wasn't designed for touring.  Bugger
all to tie-down to.  But judicious use of bungies and straps meant
things just about avoid the exhausts and stay put.  or at least they
did for the 50 mile test ride.

Lidl or Aldi do it for about 3 quid for 10 square foot. Alternatively,
pop down to a camping shop.

It's true. I bought some and put it in my garage about a year ago with a
view to using it when touring. In that time, I've had no new scratches
appear on my bikes due to luggage. I have, otoh, acquired a big
iron-shaped burn in the living room carpet and several of my fish have
died. YMMV.

I did get some last night.

Re-fitted the luggage and found a new way of mounting it that gives a
good 2 inches clearance off the exhausts when the panniers are fully
loaded.

I'll be interested to see how that works.   I've not risked panniers
as I'm convinced the pipes will set them on fire.

Can you take a photo and whack it on flickr once it's loaded up, it
might just be you've worked out a better way to fit them on?

I got Oxford Sprint panniers, as the chappy from Oxford said they were
specifically designed for bikes with high-level exhausts and would
work fine on the 10.  They've got heat-proof material on the bottom
and sides.

http://www.oxprod.com/index.php?pg=3&action=dept&id=109&pid=277&p=

Oh, and he said the 10R needs the Humpback tankbag, not the Sprint
one.  So I got one of them with a magnetic base.

Done...

http://flickr.com/photos/bensales/2531246704/
http://flickr.com/photos/bensales/2530429171/

This is without anything in the bags.  I think with stuff in they'll
hold their shape better and not crush down onto the tail, therefore
giving even more clearance to the exhausts.

As I said in another post, I did a 50 mile test ride with it like that
(mostly to run in the new tyres and check they'd put the new head on
ok) and nothing got burned.  Hot to touch, yes, but the carbon cans
run cooler than steel or aluminium and cool down a lot quicker.

My large tankbag fits ok, so I'm not worried there.

Yeah, that looks sort of ok, I think my main problem was I sort of
hung them over the sides more.  I'm sure there's a workable way to do
it ,although the idea of getting a spare pillion pad, to attach a 52
litre hard luggage case to might be the easiest answer of the lot.

ICWBW, but that doesn't look like it's going to work *at all* ... those
exhausts are miles higher than the end can on, say, a 9R.

<Suicidal Sid Mode>

Tailpack?  Might work better.  Lozzo had a huge Oxford one that was
truly cavernous.  And expandable sideways too.  Worked a treat - I
didn't die once.

Like Bear said, that rubber mat stuff; just don't buy it from a
motorcycle accessory supplier, they'll charge you a fortune for it. The
same stuff is used for all sorts of things, I think I've seen it in

Years ago I used to let my kids watch Waynes World and WW2 to keep them
schtumm for a few hours, knowing most of the jokes would go over their
heads. We were in the car and youngest daughter says in front of the
other two "Daddy, what's pubes?". "Pardon?" says I, "What's pubes, cos
Garth just got his on Waynes World".

How do you explain to a 7 yr old that one day she'll resemble a gorilla
between her legs.

That's the stuff.

Also sold in small pieces as dashboard anti-slip mats, but more
expensive; IIRC, Colin mentioned that horsey shops sell it in big rolls,
too.

I''ve had mine about 3 years now and it's nowhere near worn out

IIRC Brownz has one too.

According to the slip that was in it, if it falls apart I can send it
back and get a replacement anyway.

To be fair though, the leather one I bought at Next for about the same
money 9 years ago is still in top form, so if this falls apart any
sooner I shan't be overly impressed.

Innit just. Fogotten how old my Krug R35 is but it's looks like new and
has done many miles and IIRC at least two offs.

<snip>

Make sure you put it on then pull the cords to get it properly tight.

Yeah I've read the instructions - the lower harness pulls it into the
small of your back, rather than loading your shoulders, which is bob-on
for me.

Makes a hell of a difference when you're actually riding as well IME.

Comfortably, in a slip case. And it survived a (minor) off as well.

And, in typically fuckwitted Bear style ...

... while looking for my waterproof gloves (which I can't find), I've
found my Berghaus Dart 35, which a previous top-to-bottom search failed
to locate :) [1]

Bollocks!  Ah f.ck it, I'll try the Kriega anyway ... should be good for
a laugh.

[1] I'd stuffed it *inside* my Oxford sports throwovers - doh!
