My bike just passed it MOT with tyres quite squared and down to the
wear limiter - I was surprised they went through TBH

As I'm off to Germany on the 5th I wondered if I should get some new
tyres but it'll kill my pig if I spend 200 quid and come back with
them already squared off in 5 days - which happened to a mate a while
back. Somebody else offered me a 2nd hand Dunlop D207F J front tyre,
hardly worn at all. But I'll be buggered if I can find a D207F rear to
go with it - I guess they're discontinued.

So what's the verdict, (a) go with some other sportmax that's
compatible with the D207F, (b) stop being a pikey and buy a set of new
tyres suited to much motorway riding, or (c) just go on the tyres I've
got - if they're good enough for the MOT then they should be good
enough for the krauts?

Did you at least get an advisory?

I wouldn't want to use an MOT tester that didn't notice such things, who
knows what else they missed.

Personally, a new & matched set of tyres wins every time.

I honestly don't know - my bike is up at a mate's in Cleveland [1]
being fettled and he took it for the test.

My head says you're right - my wallet says 'bugger!' Any suggestions
for a decent set of tyres that won't square off too quickly?

I use BT 020's on my Bandit12, they're a common fit on B12's & suit me &
the bike well. If you ask 1000 riders you'll get 999 differant answers,
ask on a forum specific to your make & model & go with what's popular.

A tyre man I once spoke to mentioned that squaring off is as much to do
with the tyre profile as it is compound & riding style, summat to do
with a curved contact patch meeting the flat surface of the road. He
swore by fitting slightly narrower tyres for the rim for a better high
mileage/tyre wear balance !

Do they still do those macadam things? They last forever. They're
actually made of glass.

They're what that Ghostrider bloke uses for his "Uppsala Run" in Sweden
where he averages 176 mph from Stockholm to Uppsala. He reckons they're the
only tyres that will stand up to the abuse of sustained high speed. They're
f.cked at the end of the run mind.

Stockholm to Uppsala?

It's only 40 miles!

Yeah and he does it in less that 15 minutes. During the rush hour (so to
speak)

I had heard that they had all the grip of wood - but glass might be
more like it. I'm not sure I fancy going round the Nurburgring with
those. That said, I'd just ride according to the grip available. With
my skill level I doubt I'd push even Macadams to the limit.

I was in your position (fnarr) a couple of years back and fitted a pair of
Avon Azaro's (now Avon Storms) on the recommendation of Mr Loz of this
parish. They lasted close to 7000 miles and never gave me any concerns over
grip in the wet or dry, so if you're not an out and out hooligan (and maybe
if you are), the Avon's rock.

the limit is lower for bike tyres than for car ones, it's 1mm I think.
I guess it doesn't matter if you can be sure it wont rain !
