All bets are off til after tomorrow.  Possible outcomes range from

Oh no, that was all my fault.  Well that and competition; I guessed
you'd be building yours soon so I needed to crack the ton first.

Which I did.  Probably a good job I fitted the steering damper.

No.  Really, today's x-ray looks exactly like the one from 4 weeks ago
- no sign of any new bone at all.

Apparently the favoured option is to remove the nail and then put a
'reamer' down the middle of the bone.  This sprays out little bits of
bone, which then sort of seed the bone re-growth process - it's like
an internal bone graft.  And then they put the nail back in.

Ulp.

heh.  Tomorrow I'm going to attend the leaving lunch of a colleague,
and then meet with our HR person to discuss a 'schedule' (my word) for

Actually, I doubt it.  I imagine that it's a fairly straightforward
procedure - 3 days in hospital, I reckon, with a femoral block for 24
hours after the op, then ordinary painkillers after that.  The femur
never hurt too much after the initial op, and most of that pain was
down to soft tissue damage anyway, I think.  I mean, its not like
there's nerve endings inside your bones.

Thanks for the text, btw.

I'd never heard of a 'block' before this accident, but I had one on
the femur, and then another one was used on my arm when they did my
hand surgery 10 days later.  A quick google doesn't turn up any useful
layman's guides, but I can say that my experience has been pretty
positive.

Yeah, I found that, but it makes no ref at all to ortho surgery, and
seems to be all about short time periods.

That's more like it.  It does say "It is recommended that all blocks
on major nerves be carried out on patients that are awake or only
lightly sedated", and have no memory at all of it, but I guess I could
have been lightly sedated for pre-op.  Also, my recollection is that
it lasted at least 18 hours, if not more.

There's another technique that's probably not just a 'nerve block'
which is not mentioned there. It involves inserting a catheter into
the vein and delivering small doses of anasthetic over a period of
time, effectively continuing th nerve block indefinitely. I first saw
it used on a young lad who pulled pulled his ACL off his femur while
skiing with us last season. They left it in for a couple of days at
least, IIRC.

That's not what I've had either, as mine had no catheter to remove.
It just 'wore off', but over a long (12~24 hour) period.

Will presumably depend on the drug(s) used. Just like at the dentists,
some drugs(the older ones, in that case) are quite wide-acting and
long-lasting while others may be much more localised and quicker to
wear off.

My brother is on one at the moment, after surgery.
His formerly pristine 180 Jota is still predominantly straight, just

Good stuff. Glad to hear it.

My position was (and, to be honest, largely remains) one of complete ambiguity.

You must be stoked. I think you should celebrate by giving me the
'lovely Louise's' phone number. Tell her I'm your new carer if you
like, so I need to know all the details (apart from how to wipe your
arse).

Does bone generally take a rest from growing, or are you 'special'?

1.  She's married, with kids
2.  Get in the queue

heh.  I was warned by the original surgeon in the IoM that the trauma
could be significant enough that the bone wouldn't heal.  Apparently,
with a clean break, when you put the bits back together, everything
lines up ok (blood vessels, etc), and it gets on and heals.  But, when
the broken ends don't really match properly, then the process just
doesn't get started.  Or something.

<thinks>

Why don't we have a resident orthopedic surgeon on ukrm?

She'll leave him - they always do[1].

> 2.  Get in the queue

I'm a patient chap - I can wait 'til she's left all of them too[1].

I think I'll just stick with the 'special' tag - it's easier.

They have highly paid jobs & spend all day surrounded by nurses - what
would they want with us?

Sour - yes (well more bitter really).
Wrinkly - only in the usual places[1].
Yellow - not since I had Weil's - more brown atm.

Erm, it annoys me because lemons aren't bitter.

We don't need one, we have you and Frag to find these sort of things
out for us.

Well our 'resident accountant' can't count, and our 'resident
journalist' can barely string two words together.  A surgeon would
probably kill all of AADP.

f.ck yeah.  Drove over to F's this afternoon, had something to eat,
chilled out, drove home again.  Feel like a human being again.

Nice one.  You'll soon be up to f.cking her in a swimming pool again.

We look forward to a full report.

Indeed. Whilst I've only spent 17 days without driving it's nice to be
independent again, without having to use a useless Stagecoach bus or taxi.

Well done.

I got back in the car today, for the first time in 17 days. Felt odd &
good. Hurts like f.ck but at least it's physically possible now.

I've heard it called other things.
