It was more like 1.20 for petrol, 1.30 for diesel last time I filled up.

I'm thinking my next car will be petrol again though.
jackhackettuk@yahoo.co.uk - 29 Jul 2008 23:22 GMT > I'm thinking my next car will be petrol again though. Good call... what with VED for anything half reasonable and post 2001 going up disproportionately compared to the equivalent diesel overall in the near future.

VED is peanuts compared to the purchase other running costs, and cheap petrols are plentiful.

My position was (and, to be honest, largely remains) one of complete ambiguity.

Will the good cheer spread, I wonder. (and come down in price to something approaching levels we saw before 90p a litre?

I was surprised when zig-zagging down the hill from Bormio, seeing a Q8 garage with 1.00 on the sign. When I got closer I could see there was a smaller euro sign. According to Autoroute, they have 11 petrol stations for a town with a population of 5200. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livigno
"Livigno enjoys a special tax status as duty-free area. Italian VAT (Value Added Tax) is not paid. Although tax advantages for Livigno were recorded as far back as the sixteenth century, the current tax exemption was first introduced by the Austrian Empire around 1840. It was then confirmed by the Kingdom of Italy around 1910, then by the Italian Republic and the European Economic Community in 1960. Although no VAT is paid, income taxes are, thus Livigno cannot be considered as a tax haven."
Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of building work being done there as they have thriving winter & summer sports tourism.

My guess is this is only temporary respite in the long term upward trend of fuel prices. $200/barrel for oil by next year is very likely :-(

The Shell on the A40 at Crickhowell will undercut them by 1p.
Travel into England, towards Hereford, and the price increase by anything up to 5p a litre as the price there seems to be dictated by Tesco.

It's very odd around here. Retford, which has 5 petrol stations (Incl. morrisons), is currently 1.13. Ollerton, 5 miles away. and 1/4 the size, has 4 petrol stations (incl. Tesco) is 1.19.
Newark, OTOH, is bigger than Retford, has only 2 petrol stations (incl. Waitrose) and is, and always has been, the most expansive place I know for petrol.
