Lozzo - 05 Sep 2008 12:27 GMT Having listened to Pip extolling the virtues of his Vans skate shoes I went in search of a pair in town. There's a small 'alternative' clothing store in one of the arcades that sells DCs and stuff like that, so I went in and asked "Do you know where I can buy some Vans please?". Skater-dude behind the counter says "Have you tried Auto Trader, my mate bought his Golf from there?"
I felt like twatting the dozy c.nt but just walked out instead

At least he didn't say, "grandad".
BTW, the Schuh chain stock the Vans range http://www.schuhstore.co.uk/champion_frameset.asp?brand=VANS
Personally, I buy Airwalk trainers for use at work. Sports Direct (aka Giles Sports, Sports Soccer & Donnay Sport) usually have them for £15-20

I shopped in Aldi yesterday, too.
Of course, I packed everything into Sainsburys carrier bags...

I recently bought a pair of these:
http://www.outdoorkit.co.uk/product.php?product_id=1990
somewhat more robust than a pair of canvas Vans, and amazingly comfortable.

I buy trainers to be abused at work. £20 every 3-6 months. Latest acquisition has been a pair of Karrimor Peak 81s. Very black, light & comfy. Cost 20 quid. They were very good on the recent trip to Austria, which included a bit of hill ambling. http://www.sportsdirect.com/images/products/18008803_m.jpg
> somewhat more robust than a pair of canvas Vans, and amazingly > comfortable. Vans never seem robust. I quite like the black suede, skater type shoes but wouldn't pay the £45-50 Vans want. I have bought similar looking, cheaper, Airwalk jobs, as stated in my reply to Lozzo.

The cheap Karrimor I bought were rubbish (they were comfy though), they fell to bits in a couple of months. My Merrells cost 3 times as much but have lasted 4 times as long so far.

I have two current pairs, one of which is pretty much permanently on my feet. I'm looking for deals on replacements atm, because the sole on one pair is getting a bit smooth after two years. The others are going strong after three, although the black suede uppers couldn't be described as 'smart' any more.
I don't object to ~40 quid a year for my footwear.

I've seen how well yours have lasted and decided they are well up to the abuse I give footwear.

I know it's not your area, but there's a Vans outlet shop in Portsmouth where my kids get shoes ver' ver' cheap. There may be one near you. It's good for joke shoes; a couple of years ago I found a pair of truly vile, fake-snake, lime-green slip-ons for £5, at which point SWMBO flourished her 20% discount card. I've certainly had four quid's worth of wear from them, and find they are particularly effective when worn with a dinner-jacket. My 12yo used to wear basketball boots in the Jamaican colours emblazoned with cannabis leaves, until he outgrew them.

They look spiffy ... trouble with me is I've got feet that are not only large (11-12, depending) but very wide ... and you know what they say about blokes with large, wide feet ...
... they end up breaking trainers in a matter of weeks :( The only brand I've found that don't come apart at the seams are, weirdly, Nike, although I may give those North Face a go.
On the "outdoors" front, I bought a bum-bag in an outdoors shop in Ramsey, coz the Furygans, like most modern leathers, don't have big pockets, and I need to store stuff like wallet, mobile phone, spare earplugs, torch [1], etc, hence needing small storage I could carry on me while on the bike.
The chap had several sorts, but recommended one by a company called "Highlander", which was claimed to be waterproof ... even the zips are coated in a plastic sheeting-type seal, and I have to say it's been superb, including when I left it out overnight in a storm - nothing got even slightly wet. There's even 2 little mesh pockets to keep stuff like small change in (always a nuisance when rattling around with your stuff).

Although mine only cost me £12.95. Anyway, thoroughly recommended to anyone who has need of such a thing, for riding.

I had thought the performance (?) of the torch was good before, now it just blindingly bright. Course I did look directly into the lens and accidentally pressed the button. Left the feedback on ebay once I had recovered sufficient sight in one eye.

No worries about shoes and socks getting waterlogged and uncomfortable here, oh no.
