I Pod question

Paul Corfield - 15 Nov 2008 13:17 GMT
Has there been an updated I Pod Touch produced.  I ask because Argos are
doing this offer

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5135389.htm?tag=PS6_4a

and no other seller is remotely close. For example

http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Apple-iPod-touch-16GB/dp/B001FB5FSU/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UT
F8&s=electronics&qid=1226707009&sr=1-9

I was wondering therefore if Argos are actually flogging off an earlier
version at a discount.  Advice welcome because if the Argos one is the
most up to date then I think £148 is a good price and I might try and
buy one.

The new iPod Touch and the old iPod Touch are exactly the same.  The
new one just looks better on the back.  Keep in mind the CPU, memory,
storage space and the multi-touch screen are exactly the same.

They also run the same OS.

Grab an old one.

At that price it's a bargain.

The only thing I'd check is whether it's got an internal speaker
because the new ones do and I don't think the older ones did.

Sorry, yes, that's the only difference.  The original iPod Touch
doesn't have an internal speaker.  The new one does have an internal
tin can for 'casual listening'

It's not a brilliant speaker but if you're in the habit of falling
asleep listening to music you're less likely to break the device if
it's sitting on a bedside table.

A flat block of metal and glass isn't going to smash if you sleep on

Really? I've broken the jack plug on headphones by falling asleep and
rolling onto them before now but perhaps that was just an exception.

I suppose that's possible with any modern iPod given the thickness of
the device.

Remove the word "modern" and I'd agree with you. It's hardly a

First Argos - sorry we're closed due to power problems but we've *loads*
of I Pod Touches but I can't tell you exactly what we have it stock.

Second Argos (down the road) - "out of stock in store and at the
warehouse"

Third Argos - "stock check system not working". Sales person "we haven't
got any".

Corfield - time to go home. This is obviously an offer that sold out
after 3 hours and Argos are perpetuating a myth by suggesting they've
still got any to sell as it's clearly old stock they've bought up to try
to flog.

That's a shame.

I used to use my old MP3 player to play my own music when driving or
on holiday but the iPod touch is a much more versatile piece of kit so
will be used a lot more. Until I become bored with it..

Tellingly, it wasn't available online for home delivery or store
reservation. Usually a sign that they have run out but hope you will go
along to a store to check, then buy some other device.

This is ridiculous - 8 minutes later and nothing available.  How on
earth did you get that to work?  Website is not offering that option at

I'm getting a bit like this about getting hold of a wii fit. Plenty of
bundle offers, no use to me I already have a wii. Trying to get one
when places (particularly Argos) claim to have them, then going
through right to payment screen before they own up that they haven't
is driving me up the wall.

I get our wii-related unobtainables via Amazon in Germany (amazon.de I
think).

I needed to have an english Amazon tab open & a free translation tab
open to work out some pages, but I got a wii for Christmas when the UK
was through them, ditto a wii fit earlier this year, both delivered
within a week with english instructions and working perfectly. The Wii
needed a euro adaptor for the 2-pin mains plug, other than that no
bother at all.

My only niggle ordering the wii fit was working out that the web page
was telling me that one vendor would not post to the UK.

Well I thought I would try their automated "order by phone" system and
seemingly I have got one reserved at a local store for collection by
Thursday. It'll be interesting to see what price they try to charge me
given the offer allegedly ends today.

I checked the Argos website this morning - price of the 16GB model back
up to nearly £270. The 8GB model is still discounted. Undaunted I
toddled along to the shop this evening and gave them the reservation
number.

Argos person - "Yes it's reserved for you - that'll be £270 please."

Me - "Oh sorry, not at that price. I know what your website says about
price changes but as it's the old model surely it's better for you to
have £150 from me rather than it sitting on the shelf?"

AP  - "I'll check with the manager"

Manager checks when the I-Pod was reserved. "Oh yesterday.  OK I'll do
it at the discounted price"

Me - "Thank you"

AP - "That'll be £148.97 please."   Payment made. I call that a result
all round after trudging round umpteen shops and too many website
visits.

I'm typically 300 years behind the times when it comes to technology so
either you or I will be dead by the time I work out how to post from an

It's not the posting from the thing that worries me, it's the use of
the default iPod sig.

I'm still at the "working out how to use it stage" but initial
fumblings show it is a very clever device.  The other thing that is
striking is how well Apple have designed and developed the whole
concept (I Pod / I Tunes / Accessories) to be a way of easily
extracting money from I Pod owners.

The main disappointment is that a decent manual did not come with it.
I'm having to resort to on line manuals.

Mine says "Posted from my iPhone 3G".

However, I've just downloaded NewsTap from the AppStore so I've got

I will give it a go. I just need to work out if this newsreader is going
to duck up threading all the time. If it is then I'll bin it.

In addition to this I think I tried to use cheesey on my old n95. It
worked at home on wifi but as soon as I did it via the cellular network
it sprung up "f.ck off spammer" at me.

I guess spammers use throw away pay as you go mobile sim cards to send
spam. That was on t-mobile though.

The lite version only lets one subscribe to one group.  I gave it one
star in the iTunes AppStore because it can't possibly claim to be a
newsreader and poster if it can't put the references in the headers,
it sticks them in the body.  Therefore replies aren't positioned
properly and look like either a new thread or they sit as a reply to
the first post in the thread.

What a load of sh.t, eh?
