This last week we have been pestered by mail-shots from Sky
warning us of dire consequences if we don't stump up
£10/month for extended warranty insurance on our now 12
month old Sky+ box.

The paranoia comes in when, this very weekend just gone,
the box popped up with an on-screen message saying that it
was downloading a software update - do not switch off or
disconnect for up to 10 minutes.

There had been a short power cut, otherwise no.

Sky update their software every couple of months or so, its a perfectly
normal occurance. Normally done in the wee hours or during the daytime,
so working peeps never see it.

Ignore the warranty demands. You can pick up a second hand Sky+ box
cheaper than the cost of these warranties.

Mine had the HDD blow up the other day, after at least 4 yrs of daily
use.

I dropped an old 160GB IDE one I had lying around in it, and did a
system rebuild.. and it started working again, the only issue seems ot
be that the box has gone into suspend a couple of times and doesn't
seem to recognise the planner again when it wakes up.

Might look into getthing an HD box instead, or maybe V+.. really need
to weigh up the options and costs of each.

If (obviously) you're in a cabled area, a V+ box + their 20meg service
is a joy and delight, mate.

The V+ box is a *cough* bit *COUGH* noisy, mind, and runs hot enough
to fry eggs on it.  The Virgin EPG and UI is streets ahead of Sky, and
the V+ box has an extra tuner - we don't watch /that/ much, but a
couple of times the PITA has occurred when we've sat down to realise
it's halfway through two recordings and so we can't watch a third
channel - either watch one thats still recording (from the start, obv)
or one already completed and on the HDD.

We miss our V+ box.

Interesting.

It's odd but sky seems the cheaper option unless I'm doing the sums
wrong.  I think it's having the sky movies pack in my current mix that
stings on the virgin version of same though..

I quite like the ability to watch iplayer on it - would be interesting
to see how good the quality is though.

The PS3 Iplayer is quite good too - www.ps3iplayer.com.  Quality is
best described as poor but no real problems.  Ebuyer were selling some
excellent PVR boxes recently (digihome 160 and 80gb) for £60 for the
160gb model.  Tescos were selling the same PVR (I think branded as
Teknica, although looking slightly better in gloss black rather than
silver) at £100.  These can do two recordings at once with a firmware
update (a PITA to do - done via a serial cable and hyperterminal) but
not sure about watching a third (presumably that would need three
tuners).  Then again it is extremely unlikely that there would be
*three* things I would consider worth watching on at the same time.

It's the same quality as normal tv.  You can't tell the difference
between an 4OD, Iplayer or Virgin provided on demand content.

Interesting.

It's a shame virgin haven't got much HD content, as their "L" tarrif
looks like good value for money, the broadband seems a bit more
expensive than sky's though.

I've got the L TV package.  Only HD channel you get is the BBC one,
which is a shame, I'd like to have the Discovery ones, but you can't
even get them on the XL package.

A lot of the ppv movies are available in HD, but I guess Virgin will
catch up quickly.

Broadband probably is more expensive than Sky, but frankly cable
internet is far superior to ADSL.  I get a consistent 10Mb and even
Virgin's traffic shaping doesn't get in the way if you're clever.

Ahh, but I get 12.5, uncapped, on my ADSL for £10/m.

To all intents and purposes, it is uncapped.  They just knock your
speed down for a couple of hours if you take the piss at peak times.
Do your downloading during the day and they don't care.

I think list price of mine is 25 quid, but in the grand scheme of the
tv, phone and internet bundle it's price doesn't really matter.

The quality of service is excellent though.

As to the cost, it apparently depends how it is calculated.  Virgin
Media have so many offers and promotions, you really need a man what
knows to sort it out for you.  I'm sure I posted about it when it
happened, but this is how it worked for me: I was researching relative
costs for Sky and Virgin, and the only way online was to register
(with contact details).  A couple of days later a lovely Virgin chap
came round and laid it all out for me.

"If you take the minimum package/service in any category, then
upgrade, you qualify for refunds.  If you take another category,
there's inducements to take a third and more inducements offered to
'go larger'.

We ended up with XL TV for the price of L, XL (20meg) cable internet
for the cost of 5meg, and the L phone service was effectively free.
With that and freebie egg-frying on top of the V+ box, it was a right
bargain.  I don't think you can do that yourself, though - you have to
have somebody who knows the rules and the dodges (and is keen to push
you into the bigger services) to enable the 'upgrade path' for you.

Aye, it's awkward.  I pay 62.50 a month and get phone, 10mb internet
and the L tv package alongwith a V+ box.

I've spent time on the phone to them before trying to get the cost
down with their "exisiting customer" offers, but the V+ box screws it
up because I've had it since it came out and am on an old contract.
Anything else to give me what I've got would actually cost more.

IKWYM.  We've got phone, broadband & TV, all on the lowest packages.

I'd like to upgrade but I don't want the kind of outlay you have per
month.  We already pay a fair bit more than the standard charges as we
use movies on demand fairly regualrly as there's so much sh.t on normal
TV these days.

I don't mind the cost.  I think it's actually reasonable for what I
get and on-par with total cost of all three services from Sky+BT.

Apparently you can pay a one off £75 for the V+ then it switches to
£5/m. Possibly without changing anything else about the package.

To compare with Sky though I'm slightly better off paying £47 and
getting 12.5Mb Broadband (theoretical max = 16Mb) all the regular
channel mixes + all the movie channels.  I kept my phone with BT on
purpose and that's £11/m with inclusive free UK calls.

I keep waiting for a free-broadband-installation promo.  I'm not currently
overly bothered about not having it, so ain't in a rush.  As such, I'm
buggered if I'm paying their installation costs, especially as I'd need to
go for the "premium" Saturday job.

We have normal ex-NTL Virgin and the Catch-Up and iPlayer services are
very good.  You can detect a bit of compression occasionally but the
quality is fine.

That's normal. The software update last weekend fubared one or two of my
2D channel lists on the card and sent my digibox into a sulk, both
thankfully cured by a rescan and reboot respectively.

Exactly. There's been a number of reports on Watchdog about bogus
companies getting hold of the Sky customer database and sending official
looking letters out, trying to pretend they're Sky.

Watch out for scamming phone calls for the same thing too.

*Ding*! -  it's very well done, but in small print at the
bottom it is from "Digital Satellite Warranty Cover Ltd"

I won't say where they are, because it would just give
ammunition to the scouse-bashers.

Ignore it.

Sky don't offer an extended warranty.  My mum recently signed up to
some package with some cold caller who would protect all three of our
boxes for £30/mo.  When I found out about this I gave her a good
talking to for giving her bank details to fucktards who call up who
also said if anything went wrong with the boxes then Sky would charge
£250 per box to replace it.

I already knew this to be bullshit and rang Sky to clarify.  They said
they don't do such a programme and if one of our boxes snuffed it they
charge a callout charge of £75 regardless of what's wrong.  So for
that one can get a new dish, cables and three new boxes.  Plus if it's
not fixed and you need to call them out again then you don't have to
pay the callout charge again.

Think about it: If your box dies and Sky want to charge you a stupid
amount to fix it then you'd just cancel your account with them,
wouldn't you?  That leaves them with no income from you.  It's in
their interest to fix it and keep you happy, within reason.

Software updates happen quite often on Sky boxes, always have done.
Don't worry about it.  You just don't normally see the message as
you're snoozing.

I was planning on doing so anyway - it's just the software download
which got my natural foil-hat tendencies on the go.

Which is why I was going to ignore it.  BTDT - lightning strike killed
an early box - they said it was an act of god, so not covered, I
cancelled subs, they changed their mind.
