I drank loads of it when in Trier. Rode past the brewery on the way back to
Calais. Lovely aromas.

see the second "e" in "weak", that should change places with the "a"
in "beer".

Only a little bit.

I do generally drink stronger lagers or ales (5%+) which over a session
could be 8 or 10 pints.  I'm not saying I'm not bladdered by the end...

One you can drink for an entire session.

For example, if you were to knock back pints of 3.5% ABV IPA over the
course of an evening, you'd be rather less trashed than if you were
drinking something like Fullers 1845 at 6.3%

One would keep you merry through the whole session, the other would have
you flat on your face before teatime.

Ah.

Hence my lack of understanding of the term.  Any beer weak enough for
me to drink all evening would generally be referred to by the rest of
you as "water".

It's a beer for drinking over a length of time (a "session") without
getting too pissed too early.

There's a little more too it than that, IME.

If you're at a beer festival or brewery tour or whatever, sampling the
various wares, and someone is heard to say "this would make a good
session beer", it means that that is a beer they'd be *prepared* to
drink exclusively over the course of several to many pints. So it's not
just about strength, it's about being pleasant to drink, suiting the
palate, not being too hoppy or too dark, etc.

Yes, but that goes without saying.  Who would drink something they
didn't like over the course of a session?

A week beer drunk by lightweights who can't cope with the proper stuff
but nonetheless want to be seen to drink as much as everyone else over
the course of a 'session'.

I hate to tell you this Nige, but that was Leffe Ruby, which is
actually only 5%, and considered a bit of a ladies beer.  You had one

They won't be able to sell it. It can only be bought in person from the
abbey gate, all purchases have to be booked with the abbey by phone in
advance, with a maximum of two cases per vehicle. The aim being to
completely eliminate commercial reselling.

It's not far from Calais, but they only sell it on certain weekdays, so
a weekend run is out.

I fear that word doesn't mean what you think it means - actually,
"palava" doesn't exist, you're thinking of "palaver" wich means
wibbling on, not struggling through an apparently nonsensically
tortuous method to get nearer to your goal.

Then, of course, there's pavlova, but that's part of a separate
course.

Really?  Are you sure?  My old mum, and her mum now I come to think of
it, always used to say "what a palaver" if something was
involved/complicated/tortuous.

Yes, mine too.  However:

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/dict.asp?Word=palaver

would seem to back up my opinion, whereas:

http://www.chambersharrap.co.uk/chambers/features/chref/chref.py/main?query=pala
ver&title=21st&sourceid=Mozilla-search

seems to swing both ways.

Two hours earlier and I could have helped you out there.

Would you believe I was looking at that very page last night, and you
came to mind as a potential courier. But I'm lazy enough to wait til
next year.

I'll speak to my b-i-l, he's a bit of a beer fan, and see if he has any
sources. If not, then I'll be happy to help next year.

I really like Duvel.

However, occasionally the affection isn't reciprocated.

A. likes that. I don't mind it, but prefer "thicker" belgian beers (if
that makes any sense).

heh. You could try Grimbergen Blonde (most Tescos stock it) - it's
sort of similar to Duvel, but a less punishing ABV.

Perfect sense ... some of the dark, really strong stuff is lovely, but I
find that more than a few and I get absolutely off my face, to degrees I
don't enjoy.

I'll give it a go, thanks, but I quite like the rocket-fuel.

I made the mistake of knocking back three bottles of Duvel on a train
back from Paris one day last year. The meeting I'd been there for had
finished fairly early and I'd grabbed a couple of Leffes in some shitty
bar near Chatelet before heading for Gare du Nord.

To say I was a bit tipsy by the time I got to Waterloo would be
something of an understatement.

I was in the bar directly across the road from the Gare du Nord with
Cab a month or so ago. The waiter enquired if we were English, and it
transpired that he had assumed this because we were f.cking swearing
so f.cking much.

Well, I travel Business 1st[1] and so have access to both the free bar
in the station, and as much as you can convince the servants on the
train to supply you with. I think my current record is something like
3 quadruple Bacardi  and Cokes in the station and 7 glasses of
Champagne on the train. Autopilot engaged between St.Pancras and
Enfield.

Unfortunately Duvel is the only drink on the whole train they don't dish
out free in the business cars.

now that, I didn't know. Mainly because when champagne is available,
that's what I'm going to be drinking.

<puzzled>

When is it not available?

Or do you just mean when it's free?

Oh, well of course. I rarely drink anything else when flying short
trips - only on long-haul will I also go for the red wine with a good
dinner and port with the cheese as well... then back onto the
champers, of course :-)

probably not far off - the waiter said something to Cab in French, and
then "you English - f.cking this and f.cking that".

I haven't seen it yet.

It does that to me too ... the weird thing is, most of the time I
maintain my bulletproof-to-booze constitution when on it, but every so
often it makes me feel like I've been savaged by a herd of moose the
next day.

You'll not be invited out drinking with the real men on the next TOG
