Alex Ferrier - 24 Nov 2008 13:41 GMT > Did every member of the team[1] do the whole crossing, or was it a sort of > relay thing? It was, of course, a relay, 6 of us. Though we were all aged 13/14 at the time. The water was 52F (11C) and I was nearly hypothermic when they pulled me out at the end of my second hour long stint. Being the strongest swimmer in the group I got the shittiest sections, the second, swimming against the tide for an hour solid maybe a mile off the French coast, getting absolutely nowhere, the scene didn't change for the whole hour and I was just a gibbering wreck when they pulled me out.
We also won the Lada junior relay trophy that year for the fastest team across. Needless to say, we were probably also the only team to attempt it that year.
Another useless fact... We were only the second people from Shropshire to complete a crossing, the first, being Captain Webb.

Aged 14 I did 4k in an hour, for a charity swim once in a pool. Longest distance, I can't remember, probably 7k or 8kish, outdoors, untimed (again, when training for the channel swim). Used to be sub minute (57s) for the 100 too as a 15 year old, just before I stopped.

I had a ridiculous conversation with Mrs WUN a while back where she was *insisting* (as good swimmers do) that everyone is naturally buoyant.
I am not.
Eventually she supported me floating on my back in deep-ish water. Then she let go. "See!" she said. Then "Oh", as I slowly sank beneath the water, ending up vertical with about half an inch of the top of my head above the water line.

I learnt that people are positively (most), neutrally (a few) or negatively (less) bouyant when I did my dive training, years ago.
Back then , I was neutrally bouyant - which meant I floated, but usually a few inches below the surface.
