if a bunch of 40 somethings were going to meet in covent garden for
beer/food can anyone recommend a good starter watering hole ?

Will be a combination of soft southerners and northern monkeys so
quality beer varieties a must.

TIA

NOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

There very few pubs in and around CG that I rate.  They're all far too
touristy, for obvious reasons.

Any time I meet up with folk and we need to be close to CG for any
reason, we usually meet somewhere like the Nell Gwynne or The Coal Hole
(both just off the Strand).

Have look here:

If you head East along the Strand and find youself near Essex Street, I
can recommend the Edgar Wallace.

The Edgar Wallace is fine but very small, as they say on the site.
Probably not suitable if there are more than 8 in your group.

True, but I've been there in a group of that size and it's OK.

They usually have 8 decent real ales on tap, and that they change
frequntly, so I find it's worth popping in just to try something new if
I'm in the area.

You could try the Porterhouse on Maiden Lane, the Lamb and Flag on Rose
Street or the Prince of Wales on Drury Lane, all of which are in the
area and aren't too horrendous.

Or if you want to go Belgian there's Lowlander, also on Drury Lane.

I know a lot of people who rate the Porthouse but I can't stand it.
Lamb & Flag isn't a bad call but is better in summer when you can
mingle about outside.  PoW is OK too.

It's a bit of a c.nt to find if you don't know where it is. Easiest way
is to come out at Leicester Square tube, double back down Cranbourn
Street, then at the big junction go right down Garrick Street and you'll
see it up an alley on your left.

Your smiley has been overdoing it a bit on the booze, he's got a triple
chin!

I worked in St Martins Lane up until March this year, so know what you mean.

I also have a fairly well researched idea of what the pubs are like in the
immediate vicinity of the office I worked out of.

Most of the time, we used to use The Salisbury - reasonable selection of
ales in there, most of which always used to taste like they'd been cared
for.

The Chandos does indeed tend to serve up piss like beer, be it bitter or
lager.

Trying to think of the name of the place that was really good for ale
though, just up the road from there... humm... little pub opposite the
pedestrianised bit that takes you down to Charing Cross station, and open
fronted window wise, in the summer.

Quite small and cosy, and always a good selection of decent well kept ales -
the fact I can't remember the name of it even though I spent rather more
time than one who has a fairly long train journey home ahead of them
possibly should, speaks volumes with regards to the quality of the ale. ;-)

Oh, and yes... the Lamb and Flag is pretty good as well.

The only one of theirs I used to like was their Old Brewery Bitter, or
whatever it was called, but IIRC the CAMRA types look down their noses
at it coz it's not "real" ale, BICBW.

Sam Smiths beers are fine as long as you're drinking them in Tadcaster
but they don't travel well.

The Spice of Life at Charing Cross. 2 mins walk from CG. Assuming it's
still there, of course.
