Made my VSTAR Louder

I've been tired of sneaking up on cats and little old ladies on my 650 for some
time.  Yesterday I ran into three VSTAR 1100 riders and they showed me a trick.
You drill three or four half inch holes just inside the back end of the pipe.
There's a serious slant so ya gotta drill a pilot hole first.  There's still
sufficient back pressure to, according to them, eliminate the necessity to
rejet.

I did it and the bike is a lot louder.  Not as loud as straights, which suits
me fine.  But....I LIKE IT!!!

Just thought I'd pass the trick on.

cheers

I did the same thing to my 650 Classic.  It definitely adds some bark, and
the price is right!

GRIN.  You got that right!  I'd've done this sooner if I'd known the trick.  I
figured there might be people here that didn't know it and were reluctant to
pop 2 or 4 hundred for different mufflers.

Why louder? Do you crave attention?

repressive laws.
and thanks.

It's also a safety issue.  If they can't see you coming, hopefully
they will hear you!!

Another trick is to get a $10 "hole saw" I believe they're called and
drill directly into the back of the exaust (saw blade must be slightly
larger
than the hole that is there) but since it's conical shaped it will
self-center.
You can then pull out the baffle for much better
sound. Stock bikes have really restrictive intake and exhaust.

For my 1100 Classic I went with the $200 Max Air Kit
(www.maxairengineering.com)
and $400 2 into 1 Roadhouse pipes (www.roadhousebrand.com)...
Hooooooweeeeee, I must have gained 15HP.
I no longer feel the need for a 6th gear on the freeway!
I highly recommend these mods.

Did you take the pipes off?  How do you drill into the bottom of upper pipe?

Or.....do you just drill into the last 6 inches at the end of each pipe?
Bob Thomas - 03 Jul 2004 20:59 GMT
>Did you take the pipes off?

No

How do you drill into the bottom of upper pipe?

>Or.....do you just drill into the last 6 inches at the end of each pipe?

No.  Look INSIDE the back of the pipes.  You'll see a cone shaped opening with
the small opening forward.  You drill holes in the cone.  The cone IS the
baffle.

the cone isnt the baffle.. there is a plate about an inch behind the
cone.. THAT is the baffle.. try about 4 holes.. 1/2 inch each..

That works.  Kinda depends on how loud ya want it.

One of the guys I talked to had drilled half inch holes, three of 'em.

I had nothing larger than three eighths, so I drilled four holes and wobbled
the drill around to make 'em a bit bigger.

Somebody mentioned using a hole saw and drilling out the whole thing.

There are, btw, two cones, small ends connected.  Ya need to drill thru both.
They're only an inch or so apart so it's no problem.

Sounds nice.

cheers

Keep on Yamahaulin'

Why not remove the last baffle all together? Anyone has done this
here?

I must say I love my VStar but I miss the sound of straight pipes. I
used to ride a Shadow when I lived in the Philippines, adn there they
have no noise restriction, so I put on cobra straight pipes and I just
loved that sound.  In comparaison, the standard pipes on the VStar
make it sound like an electric shaver :-S

So I guess you don't give a crap about your neighbours, or anybody
else for that matter?

Bruno,

First my nearest neighbour lives about 1 mile from me, second I am not
considering to put straight pipes on my bike, I just want a better,
deeper, and a bit louder sound.

Sorry. But I really, really, really hate loud bikes. Or cars for that
matter.

I believe there are laws that govern the decibel levels, and I
strongly believe that those laws should be strictly enforced. The cops
should forget about coat hangers and invest in some decibel meters.

Up here in Quebec, the poor HD owners complain that the cops are
harassing them. Maybe they should put the baffles back in!

A *bit* louder is one thing.

<rant>
I really, really, really hate loud bikes. And loud cars for that
matter. I abhor inconsiderate people.

Up here in Quebec, the poor HD owners complain that the cops are
harassing them. Maybe they should put the baffles back in!! Why is it
that the first thing these people do when they buy a brand new HD is
remove the baffles?!? The new HD's have a a very nice sound as is!

I believe that there are laws that govern the level of decibels that
motor vehicules produce and I strongly believe that those laws should
be enforced. The cops should forget about coat hangers and invest in
some decibel meters.

Bruno where abouts are you in Quebec? I live in the Eastern Townships.

Regarding the noise issue, the cops around here are very strict about
it, and I respect that. But to me a bike doesn't feel like a bike
unless it has a bit of a roar to it. I don't mean like a sonic boom,
just a nice roar.  The standard pipes on the VStar 1100 just dont' cut
it for me. The bike sounds like a lawn mower. I would like a deep
throaty sound that's all. And I want to stay within the legal noise
limits. I don't want and can't afford paying the $200 tickets ;-)

Cheers

you can remove the last baffle plate and inner pipe for more noise...
but drilling the plate doent require a rejet.. simpler mod for those who
are not wanting to open the carbs

Now that he mentioned it, all that valve clatter does sound like a
sewing machine.

Sow what if it does.

Go to www.650ccnd.com. There is info on gutting the stock pipes and changing
the jets and modifying the air box to make it have a ram air effect (RAK).
The mods will make it a little louder and more deeper for a much better
sound.
